Twitter Help Monthly Roundup Round 1

Posted by Cooper on August 12, 2008

We here at BBGeeks do our best to keep our readers as informed as possible on all things BlackBerry. In an attempt to reach as many BBGeeks as possible, we use a number of tools including a BBGeeks Facebook fan page, a Youtube channel and an account on Twitter.com.

Each Friday and throughout the week for that matter, we solicit questions from other Twitter users who are having problems with their BlackBerry devices or just need some quick advice about BlackBerry software or accessories that would help them increase their productivity.

For all our readers who don’t use Twitter, we have decided to do a monthly recap of our Twitter conversations in which followers posed questions and we sourced out the answers.

We went back about a month or so in the tweets to bring you this list of questions and going forward we will recap all the questions from the previous month and post on the second Monday of each month.

Twitter Helps

asktheboater says:
Is there a way to approve Wordpress comments using your 8830?
asktheboater raised the concern that her BlackBerry 8830 kept hanging up on her when she tried to approve comments on her Wordpress Blog. She asked if this was a common compatibility issue between Wordpress and RIM devices.

BBGeeks answered:

A Google search provided no insight into this problem and did not result in the discovery of any known issues with Wordpress and the BlackBerry 8830. We suggested downloading an alternate to the default BlackBerry browser such as the Opera Mini browser or the Minuet browser.

davesnyder says:
I’m looking for an app to sync my phone with my Google calendar
This is a very common request. Most people have a Google account to manage at least some portion of their lives whether it’s calendars, email or some of the other handy services offered by Google. Once you have a BlackBerry, it can be very beneficial to sync your data and have it available to you while on the go.

BBGeeks answered:

Google has heard the call from BlackBerry owners around the world and has gone ahead and created a Google application to assist with synchronizing your calendar data Once you download the Google Sync application you will be able to keep your Google calendar updated and in sync on both your BlackBerry and your PC. The application runs in the background and works to keep you on schedule even when you are without network coverage.

gabejamison says:
what about the memory cleaner utility that is found under opitons > security options
gabejamison sent in a tweet one day in reference to a conversation we were having with another follower. We love to see our followers jump into the various conversations we have. It helps them connect with one another, while at the same time we get to share in all of their combined knowledge. Every once in a while we learn something brand new and we quite enjoy this!

BBGeeks answered:

gabejamison referred to the Memory Cleaner utility which comes standard on your BlackBerry device. We had no idea that this utility even existed, as it is hidden in the security options and requires specific settings to be activated in order for the icon to appear on your main application screen.

The revelation of the utility prompted us to do a little homework and we found out quite a bit about reducing the internal memory used by your BlackBerry. So much so that we decided to write a full featured article on the topic of cleaning up your device so that you have the maximum amount of internal BlackBerry storage possible.

conedude13 says:
Do you know if anyone else is having trouble playing Travian on their BlackBerry 8310
conedude13 is a fan of the popular browser based game that goes by the name Travian. We had never heard of the game before so we jumped online to discover that Travian is actually an awesome real time strategy game with a military edge that has a player base of more that 3 million people around the world.

BBGeeks answered:

After some Google searching we did not find anybody who was complaining about not being able to play the game on their BlackBerry device. We did however find Travian Proxy and suggested conedude13 give it a shot.

Travian Proxy is specifically designed to allow players of the game to connect through mobile phones and BlackBerry devices. Travian Proxy acts as sort of a middle man for devices which are having trouble connecting.

lsrccrd says:
Is anyone else having trouble installing Zumobi on their BlackBerry devices?
lsrccrd’s question came hot on the heels of the official announcement of the tile based, content browsing application. It is also an example of a tweet that spawned a nice article on the site.

BBGeeks answered:

We had no problems whatsoever installing the Zumobi application, on our device, but the process did take an extraordinarily long time and appeared to be frozen at times.

lsrccrd reported back with the same results later in the day.

CoreyHammond says:
Is there a way to tether a sprint 8130 and not get charged for extra tethering plan? is there a hack or way around it?
This is also a very popular topic with BlackBerry owners as many service providers nickel and dime their customers in order to have this “added feature” enabled.

BBGeeks answered:

There are currently no methods that we are aware of that will allow you to circumvent the billing process of your current provider. Even if there were, we are not entirely sure that we could share that here on the site =)

rickt says:
Trying to find a way to get my BB 8330 Curve to imprint time/date stamps on photos taken on-phone.
Having the date and time, as well as location data is becoming more and more popular with the evolution of GPS functionality in mobile phones.

BBGeeks answered:

We didn’t know off hand if there was an application that would stamp date and time info on the actual photographs taken on your BlackBerry, but we did suggest a couple of solutions. The first is Twitxr, a mobile solution for sharing your pictures with time stamp information. The second application we suggested was Mobile Tracker software from Sky Lab. Mobile Tracker offers you the added functionality of geo tagging your images.

jamesorlowski says:
I got the Freedom Mini GPS for my 8130, but not having luck connected it to the phone. It’s paired, but won’t connect. Thoughts?

BBGeeks answered:

jamesorlowski managed to figure out this Freedom Mini GPS on his own. It turns out he had to select the device in Settings, Advanced Options, GPS, as well as turn location ON.

Tsoniki says:
I grabbed the new Flickr app by BB yesterday-but there is no photoset option when uploading? Should I uninstall then reinstall?
This didn’t sound right at all. The photoset option should be an integral part of any Flickr application released for the BlackBerry.

BBGeeks answered:

We suggested deleting the Flickr application from the BlackBerry and re-installing it

jessicaknows says:
Do you know of a web-based CRM (free) that is BB compatible?

BBGeeks answered:

We suggested trying out the Sprinx CRM software from Sprinx Systems. Sprinx CRM is a full featured CRM solution for managing business contacts, customer orders, marketing campaigns and more.
