Overview:

Sim Detective is an application developed to give you an added level of protection against BlackBerry theft.  Traditionally, if you lose your device you are out of luck when it comes to tracking the thief.  There are no internal security mechanisms in place to broadcast information back to the rightful owner.  Additionally, the police will not be quick to pressure the phone company to trace your line etc unless there is an immediate physical danger related to the location of the device.

With Sim Detective you now have the ability to designate specific contact text or email address to report to if your BlackBerry is stolen.  Here is how it works: Sim Detective registers your Sim card data and monitors your BlackBerry to ensure that it is using that Sim card at all times.  If the BlackBerry thief pulls out your Sim card and swaps it for theirs (common practice when stealing a phone), the Sim detective will immediately see the change and broadcast a series of details about the new user to your designated point of contact.

The Sim detective BlackBerry application will broadcast the following information: A custom greeting/instructions for your point of contact, The date and time of Sim replacement, users phone number, imsi and imei information, and Mobile Network operator.

Pros: I can walk around knowing that a thief could grab my BlackBerry at any time and I have the ability to at least get a glimpse of where they may be through gps and cellular location.  There is nothing like the hopeless feeling of losing your phone with no way to track it.  Being delivered any information about the phones location and or user is a huge pro.

Cons: If the BlackBerry thief is savvy enough to know that he can attempt to enter the password a number of times and "force wipe" the device then these security precautions are rendered null and void.  This would be the one main drawback to the sim protection method.
