Handy Weather
Editorial Rating
Overview:Handy Weather for Blackberry is a complete weather solution (sans radar) that is sure to please most users, delivering up to date weather information (powered by Intellicast) and displaying it in a way that doesn't look as if it were designed 10 years ago. With two subscription options available, 3-month/1-year, season users or all year weather fanatics should find Handy Weather will meet most of their weather needs.Searching for a good, reliable, and at least decently designed weather application for Blackberry is a small odyssey in itself. While there are many different options for Blackberry/weather afficianados, many of the apps fall short in one more more areas. As far as information available and design goes, BerryWeather is one of my personal favorites as it has a ton of visual appeal and customization options in regards to themes, but also packs in a great deal of useful weather information. So how does Handy Weather stack up to my self claimed current champ? When you first start up Handy Weather, you'll see 3 default cities...(I deleted them already but I believe they were Moscow, New York City, and Tokyo). Hitting the Berry button will bring up the menu allowing you to add many of your own cities. A small catch and reason to upgrade to a full paid version is that trial versions will show weather forecasts from random cities, ignoring your predefined ones. Certainly a valid reason to upgrade, don't you think? The Berry button is the main way of switching between the current forecast, and a unique "graph" style extended forecast that should please more visually oriented users. The main weather screen shows the current conditions for the selected city. Viewing future dates is as simple as scrolling left or right which will in turn bring up the forecast for the next/previous day. Scrolling up or down will move you between different cities in your list. If you are the type that likes to go custom and edit things through and through, Handy Weather may not be for you as the only real settings are adding/deleting cities and changing the automatic refresh time. One particular omission that is troubling and I wish would be included in more weather apps is a good radar. Without this, no weather app can truly be "professional", nor should it be more than $5 without one. Conclusion: Handy Weather is a robust weather app that will please most users. However, hard core weather afficianados and those looking for mobile radar will have to look elsewhere. Pros: Very quick updates. Animated visuals. Well rounded set of weather information. Cons: Memory eater - 1.8MB install (blame the animations I assume), no radar, app can get jittery and slow at times on older devices, 2 hours is the shortest amount of time to automatically refresh info - shorter time would be welcome, no "live" homescreen icon to give you quick temp/conditions information.
