eMobile Weather
Editorial Rating
Overview:Those looking for a full a full featured weather app powered by AccuWeather that even has a live radar, eMobile Weather is your weather app. While it may not be as visually pretty as weather apps on other platforms, eMobile Weather is none the less a worthy addition to your app selection. Finally!!! A Blackberry weather app with a radar! Since weather radar is a big part of more serious and "professional" weather apps, I'll start there. If the weather radar feature was your sole buying decision in BB weather apps, I'm sorry to say that you still may want to continue your ongoing search. While eMobile Weather is better than most and at least has a weather radar, the radar is rather sparse in settings and antiquated at best. Heck, the radar isn't even animated. For quick glances on approaching weather, eMobile's radar should do just fine. However, those amature/closet weather freaks will find themselves letdown and still wanting Moving on from the radar, the actual weather information displayed is done in a nice and rather modern manner with plenty of spacing and contrasting colors as not to have any problems with text blending into the background/foreground. The default view shows you a quick snippet of current information as well as snippets of the approaching 5 days. Selecting any of the days shown in the 5-day forecast brings you into another page showing a tad more information such as wind speed and UV index. Not exactly the real type of data you want to know as you're chasing a monster storm, still, it is more data than you would have had without any weather app at all. One other nice feature of eMobile Weather is the Live Icon that displays on the homescreen (if set there) and gives the user a quick rundown of temperature...and just in case you forget, the name of your set 'home location". I haven't experienced any differentiations in regards to the actual conditions reported inside the app in comparison to the live icon as I did with BerryWeather. One last note concerning the live icon is that the icons for eMobile Weather's live icon are not my favorite. Personally, they come off as slightly 'tooney" or "outdated" if that makes any sense. Obviously such comments and the preferences associated with them are subjective and will vary from user to user. Users who like to customize everything in their lives by adding their own flare to things might like the several included "themes" (really they're just different wallpapers) that are included to change up the weather background. While the added feature of themes is a nice touch, I found that most of the backgrounds ended up at times obscuring parts of the weather information or making it harder to read. While some would consider the plain blue background boring or outdated looking, I found it to suit my needs just fine as well as allow me to actually be able to read what I was looking at. Maybe to take this theme idea further, the good folks over at eMobile could have/will include the ability for the user to use their own stored wallpapers as backgrounds for the application. Conclusion: While eMobile is a nice weather app, I personally don't see anything that justifies the $16.95 price tag as several free weather BB apps offer the same amount of information coupled with the rather abysmal amount of user settings. If you're looking for a more robust and professional weather app, I would suggest looking elsewhere, again, especially for the price. Pros: Quick updates. Weather radar. Rather modern visual appearance. Accurate weather information Cons: Slow initial start up. Minimal user settings to tweak. Radar is not animated, nor are there any zoom preferences or any other settings to customize the radar. Price. I use http://m.wund.com/ on my BlackBerry and http://www.wunderground.com/ on my computer. If you give them $5 a year you get no pop-ups. What a deal. Radar, Satellite, Marine, etc.
