What to do if your BlackBerry gets wet

Posted by Joe on September 17, 2008

Panic. It’s the first emotion you’ll feel if you ever see your BlackBerry immersed in water — or worse, soda or another sugary liquid. If it’s the latter, well, you might be out of luck. I’ll give a suggestion later on, but it’s really for the device-savvy only. For now, let’s stick with the problem at hand.

The first thing to do, obviously, is to get your BlackBerry out of the water as soon as possible. Next, pull the battery and wipe it dry. Make sure to store it in a cool, dry place. Then it’s on to your device. I would suggest taking out a dish towel and laying the BlackBerry on it, screen up. After 10 or so minutes, flip it over. This will drain some of the water out of the device. It won’t get it dry, but it’s a start.

At this point, many are tempted to take a blowdryer to the device. I would caution against this. Not only will it cause the device to become very hot, but it also causes condensation while it blows. You might, for instance, see the inside of your screen fog up. This happened to me when I tried to blowdry an old cell phone. While your BlackBerry might work later on, this is still not ideal.

What I would recommend is — and you might think I’m nuts:

Yup. Stick that baby in a container of rice. The theory behind it is simple. Rice absorbs moisture. The idea is that this will suck the moisture out of your wet phone, eventually rendering it operable. However, and I cannot state this strongly enough, wait 48 hours before inserting the battery! I’ve jumped the gun before and my device has worked, but this comes as a strong caution from the tech people I know. There’s a chance, albeit small, that you short circuit the thing.

Note, too, that your warranty does not cover water damage. If you try to get a warranty replacement, your BlackBerry will indicate that there has in fact been water damage, and your claim will be denied. Those who have insurance — which should be everyone, considering how expensive BlackBerry devices are — should still be able to file a claim.

If it’s something other than water that drowned your BlackBerry, cleaning it might be a bit trickier. Of course, pull the battery first. Then, you’ll have to clean it with demineralized water. For instructions on how to disassemble your BlackBerry, check out BlackBerry FAQ. That’s for the 8800 series, but they have them up for most BlackBerry models. Warning! Do not do this unless you’re confident of your ability to disassemble, clean, and reassemble your BlackBerry.

I’ve heard that also pulling the battery and sticking the phone on the freezer for a few hours/days will do the work. Does anyone have done this?
(I’ve never had my bb or any other phone get wet)

#7349 Joe Smarts on September 18th, 2008 at 12:58 pm

The rice is cleaver idea however I’d first take a can of air (typically used for cleaning keyboards and other small electronic items) and spray down your BB first. This will most likely clear away the moisture. However I bought the replacement plan so I’m covered for anything.

“However I bought the replacement plan so I’m covered for anything.”

That’s why they call you Smarts. I can’t see why anyone wouldn’t pay the $5 per month for the insurance.

#7356 Surfingsimbad on September 19th, 2008 at 1:44 am

I dropped my BB in water. I did not do any back-up in the last weeks. Is it possible to recover all the data by putting the memory card in another BB?

Joe
#7357 Joe on September 19th, 2008 at 8:21 am

Surfing, the only data you could recover in that case is the data on the memory card. But you shouldn’t lose the memory on your BlackBerry if you drop it in water.

Hey Smarts and Joe where do I get a replacement plan? Thanks.

Big Al, it sounds like you’re best off going to the place where you bought the Berry.

So i am a little impatient buy yesterday about 11am i dropped my blackberry in water, i got it out pretty quickly took the battery out and dried it off and set it aside to dry, i tried to start it after and it didnt so i let it sit a while longer, and later that night it did but the trac ball was typing the letters p and u so i pluged to charge for 2 min then took it apart again now the trac ball is not working, i have it in uncooked rice is there a chance that it will work like before i only had the phone for 2 weeks. please reassure!!!

Cooper
#9228 Cooper on January 28th, 2009 at 1:04 pm

@Magina.M – there is a slim chance that you will get your device back to working condition. The problem if any will lie in the various connections inside your device. If the rice can absorb any excess moisture before it corrodes those connections you will be in good shape.

If they have sat too long before being exposed to the rice treatment there may be no recovery.

Good luck!

Hi guys, I’m in a bit of a trouble here. My friend dropped my BB Javelin into the pool three days ago. I pulled the battery out of the phone right away and have been drying the phone for 3 days (I put it below a desk lamp). This morning, I tried to start the phone again but nothing works except for the flash light that is glowing. Any idea guys what I should do? Is it basically broken or do I still have a chance to make it work? Thanks for the input guys

Joe
#9530 Joe on February 11th, 2009 at 6:52 pm

Man, Albert, I dunno. I’d let it dry some more, but not under a lamp. Just leave it out, or do what I said above, stick it in a bowl of rice. Give it another 36 hours or so. If not then, well, it just might be junk.

#9616 SP on February 17th, 2009 at 8:00 pm

Hey all,

I lost my BB Curve from Sprint to water damage, but talked the store rep into a new phone. I kept all of my #’s, but lost my agenda, tasks, speed dials, tunes, pics … etc. You get the picture. I have the same mem. card in the phone. Any clue how to retrieve any of the pertinent info I lost?

Cooper
#9634 Cooper on February 18th, 2009 at 11:20 am

The only way you are going to get that information is if you had previously backed your phone up using BlackBerry Desktop Manager. If you do not have a backup then unfortunately you will have to start from scratch. my advice would be to do regular backups — biweekly or monthly to ensure you always have the ability to recover from a major error.

I just got my Black Berry Bold a few weeks ago and today i was playing football and it started raining so i put my sports bag under a bench with my phone inside and played. When i got finished the screen was really light colored and it looked foggy and stuff. You can see the little bit of water under the screen and i’m freaking out right now. I haven’t tried the rice idea yet, but idk if that will help if there is water in the screen. PLZ HELP i’m panicing. Thx

#9852 blk berry pearl help on March 4th, 2009 at 8:28 pm

i dropped my blackberry pearl in the toilet. i took the battery out and let the phone dry. after about an hour or so i put the battery back in and the phone came on. i went to sleep and woke up the next day and the screen wasn’t on but the ball turned green. does that mean that the phone still works or does that mean that it has been short circuited? help plz

Cooper
#9868 Cooper on March 5th, 2009 at 10:29 am

You are most likely out of luck here — try sticking the Pearl into a bucket of rice for a couple days – should wick out any remaining moisture. If your phone does not turn on after that you are out of luck =(

#9877 Tiffany on March 5th, 2009 at 8:49 pm

yesterday i dropped my blackberry pearl into the toilet bowl but picked it up within 5 seconds.
i let it air dry for only an hour and tried putting the battery in and the red light started flashing on the upper right corner. then about 3-4 hours later i cleaned it with rubbing alcohol and then tried putting my battery in after that and the red light was flashing and the track ball was flashing green too and so i let it sit in a bowl of rice… and maybe tried putting the battery in a couple [3-5] times after that and nothings changed. its sat in the rice for about 18 hours now and i tried putting the battery in again and the same thing is happening…..
is my phone junk now?

#9931 luis on March 9th, 2009 at 10:13 am

hi, so i found my bb in a glass of beer it probably stayed there for no more than 5 mins. i took it out, took the battery away and left it to dry overnight, today a tried to turned it on and it works but when i type my password it only types the letters u,m and s, what can i do to fix my keypad,m the phone is only 3 days old. thanks..

#9967 jana on March 12th, 2009 at 8:31 am

my blackberry bold got wet (not very) and I dried it off. It asks for the password and the keyboard types in too many letters. Is there a way to bypass the password? I can take calls, and see that I am getting messages, etc…

#10006 Pigue on March 16th, 2009 at 5:42 pm

The blowdryer works fine as an initial drying tool, just don’t turn on the heat. Most have a switch for hot and cool, use the cool. Then let it dry for a day or two. Has worked for me without fail.

#10035 Sugarfoot on March 19th, 2009 at 3:20 am

I dropped my blackberry storm in the sink. It only got wet a little, but I did the rice trick, let it dry for two days with the aid of a low-heat stream of blow drier air appx. one foot away, and now everything works just as it did before except for the camera/video light glowing at all times, even when I cut the phone off. When I look through the hole where the light comes through, it looks like part of a blurry eye chart or one of those old movies that began with the circle with the oscillating line that came on for a few seconds before the movie begins. The light is muted, not as bright as the video light and definitely not as bright as the flash. It doesn’t drain the battery, just more of an annoyance since I just got the phone a month ago. Any advice on how to get this thing off? I don’t want to go through insurance because with this thing, I’m afraid I’ll need all the maximum replacements I can get (touchscreen = broken in no time).

#10060 Matt on March 20th, 2009 at 6:39 pm

Hey guys, somehow my BB Bold LCD screen got cracked inside the phone and the guys at the phone store are saying there is nothing they can do. I’ll probably just end up buying a new phone on Ebay for cheap and putting my SIM in it but I would really love to read all the texts people have been sending me. The phone still works and I have talked on it and hear it ringing all the time, the only problem is the screen doesn’t work. Is there anyway to sync my SMS to my computer and read them on here? Ive found a few programs you can put on your phone to do it via email, but mind you I can see anything to do that. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Matt,

This is the only thing I can think of, but I don’t know if you can do it without seeing your screen:

#10117 mitch on March 25th, 2009 at 11:56 am

Hi everyone,
Thought I lost my bberry this weekend but found it outside! The bad news is that it had rained for about an hour and didn’t find it until afterwards. I took out the battery and let it sit out for 3 days now. I put the battery back in today and the back light isn’t working well. I can get through the password screen but can’t see much when I get into it, definitely not enough to read an email. Should I try to dry a little longer or am I just SOL???

#10252 KCChiefs on April 4th, 2009 at 1:15 pm

My wife spilled a glass of wine on my BB last night. I tried to dry it off as good as I could, used a blow dryer on cool (yeah, i hadn’t looked on the web for what and what not to do). When I first put the battery in it will go through start up, then it displays the password screen but I can’t type anything. The screen eventually goes black and stays back unless I remove the battery again and start all over. I just put in rice.

It’s a work phone and I just got this new one Wed because the my first one stopped working. If I go back in with “water” damage monday I’m toast. Any advice welcome.

Joe
#10263 Joe on April 6th, 2009 at 7:22 am

mitch and KCChiefs, you both might have to wait for the device to dry off a bit. However, that might not be enough, especially if it’s been a few days.

There’s little you can do to clean it at this point, other than using demineralized, deionized water. Even then, you risk further damage and I don’t recommend doing it unless you know exactly what you’re getting into.

#10264 J-Yo on April 6th, 2009 at 9:04 am

Ok, first I want to thank all of the previous posters because I’m feeling a little bit of HOPE and not quite as much of the dread I was.

My Blackberry Storm had a marginal amount of water dripped on the touch screen this morning. Maybe a tablespoon? As soon as I realized it (maybe 5-10min later), I dried it off and pulled the battery and dried the water that had seeped just under the cover. I could see the water under the screen before I pulled the battery.

I’ve tried putting the battery back in about 3 times now. The first couple, I couldn’t get the screen to come back on. I don’t have any rice here at work so I used an air can to gently try to blow some of the water out. The last time, the screen came on and was seemingly functional but still showed the water underneath. So, I’ve pulled the battery again and have it sitting facedown on a tissue.

What do you think?? Do I have hope? I do have insurance but obviously don’t want to use it if I don’t have to. However, I only have 60days to file a claim. What if problems don’t show up until after that time frame? Is that possible?

Thanks!

#10276 Meaghan on April 6th, 2009 at 7:30 pm

Hey,

I came here a few days ago because I realized my Blackberry Curve had obtained water damage without my knowing and was slowly deteriorating. I immediately did the rice trick for maybe 30 hours, turned the phone back on and it worked!

Now I’m back to where I was before. There’s no speaker. (I can’t hear anything but I can still make all the calls.) How could it possibly be backtracking like this? I have it just sitting out now. Any recommendations?

#10281 KCChiefs on April 7th, 2009 at 4:20 am

Update: When I get to the password screen I can type now, but when I press a key two stars appear in the password display, so i know it’s not typing correctly. It’s been like that since Sunday. Hoping for a miracle here. It’s taking a rice bath right now.

I JUST GOT MY NEW BLACKBERRY CURVE WITH THE CHIRP YESTERDAY. I DROPPED IT IN THE TOILET TODAY BUT IT WAS NOT IN THERE NO MORE THAN 5 SECONDS. SO I TOOK EVERYTHING APART IMMEDIATELY AND LEFT IT IN A TISSUE FOR LIKE 20 MINUTES. I THEN PUT IT REAL CLOSE TO A HEATER FOR LIKE 5 TO 10 MINUTES. I SAW THE SCREEN START TO FOG UP AND TOOK IT OFF AND STARTED TO CRY. I LET IT SIT FOR ABOUT 2 OR 3 HRS PUT THE BATTERY IN AND IT CAME ON HOWEVER THE SCREEN KEPT FLASHING UNTIL IT WENT OFF. I JUST GOT THIS YESTERDAY. WHAT ARE MY CHANCES THAT I CAN EITHER WAIT AND HOPE IT WORKS OR JUST CALL SPRINT. WILL THEY SEND ME A NEW PHONE ITS ONLY BEEN 1 DAY. WHAT DO I DO?

#10361 Justin on April 11th, 2009 at 12:15 am

The other day i was checking my text messages while in the shower.. dumb. anyways the little bit of water that was on my hands after drying them off with my towel got onto the blackberry keys. no biggie right? my screen froze and i had to restart my blackberry. after restarting my phone, all of the buttons were acting crazy. the buttons would do things they werent meant to do and it was really frustrating. after a day and constant messing with it, all the keys returned back to normal but the trackball. the trackball moves and lets me do everything except for select. now i have been using my enter button. i took it to the att store and they said that there was water damage by indication of the water level sticker, but that doesnt make sense to me that only the select option of the trackball would not be working. ive blow dried my phone briefly a couple of times and let it set out for a couple of minutes. i feel like it is going to work soon, but what is the next step i should take? is the rice a good idea? help me please!

Cooper
#10387 Cooper on April 13th, 2009 at 8:45 am

Definitely try the rice for a little while — first thing you should do though is pull the battery out while the device is powered on and replace after 30 seconds.

Also – here is an instructional video about using your BlackBerry in the shower ;)

Is there a way to tell if my blackberry battery D-X1 got wet? If so, could that affect how it works. My BB still powers up but it is very sketchy in responsiveness. The white moisture indicator inside the BB is still pure white so I don’t think that got wet. The battery has a white rectangle on the bottom (next to the connectors) but it has a red stripe through it. Don’t know if that means something.

#10427 Sue on April 14th, 2009 at 7:22 pm

Help! I just dropped my blackberry in soda pop. Took out battery immediately, rinsed with regular water, blew dry and tried inserting battery – red light came on and phone tried to boot up – no luck. Took battery out again and started looking here. See that denatured alcohol has been successfully used. Dipped phone for 10 seconds and have in rice now – any other suggestions?

last week I was over at a friends for a bonfire and some drinks in the backyard firepit when it started raining, I didnt realize my BlacBerry Pearl slipped out of my pocket onto the grass. being a bit drunk, I walked home and didn’t realize that i didnt have my phone until the next morning. I phoned my buddy, who was at class on campus, and said he’d look around the house for it. When he got home around dinner time, he looked around the house, and the backyard, and found it sitting in a muddy puddle in the grass!! We immediately took out the battery and put it into a bowl of rice, waited 2 days and prayed, and it works perfectly!! The only problem is, now the water damage stickers on the battery and the inside are red. For a long time now the speaker has been crackly, but now im afriad to try and get it fixed because of “water damage”. but my phone shows no signs and works great (other than the water damage stickers!!)

Any ideas?

Im in Canada with Telus :)

Thanks guys!

Okay so I had to walk a short distance in a down pour of rain today and after about an hour i realized my blackberry curve was a little foggy on the right side of the screen. When I got home I did what I’ve done before with previous phones and put a hair dryer on it but I found this forum and it said not to. Do you think since it was just a little rain that cause it and I didn’t drop it in a bucket of water or something that it will be okay??

#11455 Gina on June 4th, 2009 at 9:01 am

i dropped my bb pearl in water last night, took the battery out and let it dry over night. This morning i put it back together and it seems to be working fine, but i can see what looks to be water behind the screen. Do i need to let it dry more? Or am i okay to use it???

Thanks

Caitlin and Gina,

You should both be fine. A little water from time to time happens. Most issues arise when the BlackBerry is completely submerged.

so, I was at work cleaning the women’s restroom, and my blackberry pearl was in my shirt,in my bra to be exact, and as i leaned over the toilet it fell in. It was in there for like 3 seconds bc i felt it falling and grabbed it as it hit the water…I immediately took the battery out, shook it out hardcore, then ran to the automatic hand dryer and dried it out as good as i could, battery and all. But i put the battery back in for like 20 minutes and all looked fine, until i tried to text, and my buttons are all jacked up. Half of them type other letters than what is on the pad, and my space button doesn’t work…this happened about an hour ago, and the phone is now taken apart and i have tried blow drying it out some more….but i am going to try the rice trick tonight….hit me up with any other advice…thanks

It turns on fine & scrolls everywhere but wont respond to any buttons I push…

Hi. I dropped my phone in the toilet for a total of 3 seconds last night. My phone turns on and shows that I have messages but after about 20 seconds fades off. I can see that there is still water behind the screen. Its the keyboard and the trackball that doesn’t work. When I plug it in to the charger it shows the time. I don’t have any rice around, Do you have any advice. It’s the curve 8900 and again, it turns on, my problem is the keyboard and trackball is not functioning. Please help!

Thank you!

Joe
#11761 Joe on June 16th, 2009 at 12:38 pm

Tamesia and JennyKC,

You just have to wait for it to dry. The recommendation is 48 hours of letting it sit without the battery.

#11782 Emme on June 17th, 2009 at 9:49 am

Do not throw your BB away even if it doesn’t work after a month. I was volunteering with FEMA after Ike hit in Houston. I went to get water and my BB Curve fell in the ice chest, I immediately got it out and took the batter out, I set it to dry in the sun while I gave out supplies. I had to purchase another one since it wasn’t working after a week. Well how about after 9 months it is working again!! So now I have 2 BB Curves LOL. So don’t throw out your phone it may take some time but it may come back :)

#11790 Sarah (Again) on June 17th, 2009 at 12:19 pm

Ok so I left my phone in a bowl of rice for about 3 days without the Battery & Sim Card… When I put the Battery Back in it worked fine for about 40 minutes so I took the Battery out to put the Sim card in, when I started up my phone it only worked for 5 minutes then stopped again… I don’t know if it has to do with me taking the battery out a second time after it has started up already… Another thing is it seems to stop responding when I try to use the (alt) button to use the number keys… what else can I do? its been 2 1/2 weeks shouldn’t it be dry by now? Or is it just never gonna work properly anymore???

#11925 Cooper on June 22nd, 2009 at 8:41 am

@Polly Depending on the BlackBerry settings or theme in use, txt messages could be going to a separate SMS folder. Check to see if you have a separate folder.

Alternatively, if you go to messages, you can see text messages by click the menu button from inside the message list. From the pop up menu, scroll to and click SMS Inbox. That will show you your received text messages.

OK, here’s a twist I haven’t seen anyone report yet. Coke spilled on Storm in car console, immediately dried off inside & out, tried to turn on right away (obviously I hadn’t planned on it happening and hadn’t researched what to do if it did). It works in that it powers on, and my touch will highlight the different icons on the screen, but it will not activate the icons, nor will the push buttons activate anything. I’m most upset about my extensive contacts and notes, which of course I secured through encryption, so my new Storm won’t read the card. Help me, Obi-wan. You’re my only hope.

Cooper
#12135 Cooper on June 29th, 2009 at 8:15 am

Plug that baby into Desktop Manager and see if you can do a full backup before it dies.

Water damage is one thing and it is often just a matter of time before recovery if the proper steps are taken. Coke on the other hand is a very corrosive material and it can cause major damage if even a little bit is left on the components.

Poo, you should probably let it dry for a good long while before putting the battery back in.

I dropped my Blacberry 8900 in the kitchen sink while washing dishes I took it out immediately and pulled the battery out and my memory card. I let it sit out for a day and a half and put it in rice. I turned it on it took 3 minutes to start but none of the buttons work the track ball moves but its fruitless I can’t select anything. What can I do?

#12245 Reagan on July 5th, 2009 at 11:43 am

help please my bb pearl went through the washer, my husband is going to be irrate! is there any hope? I didnt find out until it had been out of the washer for about 8 hours. I took out the battery and it didn’t look wet I tried turning it on but it was a no go. my battery was dying before it was washed so I don’t know if that is why but I tried to charge it and it wouldn’t. then I decided to actually use my brain and went on line and found this sight. Im about to try the rice but is it to late?

You may be out of luck – definitely try the rice trick but after 8 hours in the wash I have little hope of a successful recovery =(

#12289 Tony on July 6th, 2009 at 6:17 pm

Hi, last monday some coffee spilled in my laptop bag, which ultimately seeped through another compartment of my bag, which held my blackberry pearl 8110. I took out the battery to let it dry for a few hours. Everything is working fine; however, when I talk to people, I don’t have a problem hearing them, BUT the person on the other end has a hard time hearing me. They also mention that I sound like I’m mumbling or that I am talking “under water.” Is there anything I can do to fix this audio problem?

Cooper
#12298 Cooper on July 7th, 2009 at 7:03 am

Try hooking up a headset to your Pearl to see if you still sound odd to your callers.

There may be damage to your phone due to residual moisture or buildup from the spilled coffee. If this is the case you will need a new phone =(

#12317 Vince on July 7th, 2009 at 11:46 am

Just to add my experience to the data pool…

Accidentally sent my BB through the washer. Found it as soon as it was done. I took the battery out and used the rice (this is the third phone to be washed in this household, so I was familiar with that trick (we like clean phones)). Left it for two days, though three would’ve been better. It’s been coming back slowly. The screen was a mess, and I thought it was finished, but I think it’s still drying out. It’s almost clear at this point. Initially, the battery wouldn’t hold a charge, but that’s improving as well. The media card wouldn’t register at first, but it’s back now.

My primary problem is that I still have no services. I can have up to 5 bars, but only a “1x”, no “ev”. No phone, email or browsing. I don’t know if this is something that needs to be reset somehow.

Also, if I turn it off, the screen goes white unless I remove the battery. I’ve been leaving it out whenever I can while waiting for the screen to completely clear up. I’ve also ordered a new battery for the heck of it.

#12321 A Goldman on July 7th, 2009 at 3:38 pm

Am happy to report that my blackberry just survived a fall in the pool. I removed the battery and sim card. Baked the blackberry in the oven at 115 degrees for about 30 minutes and then left it alone. It started back-up within about 6 hours, then I left it alone overnight. For awhile I needed my headset to hear callers, but by day two all functions returned to normal. Bottom line, let it dry out and be patient.

#12332 colby on July 8th, 2009 at 10:26 am

myself and a friend were throwing someone in the pool……..i made sure to get his phone out of his pocket but forgot about mine in my pocket lol. there may have been booze involved! i sat mine on the fan for around 6 hrs just to get the excess water out of it. but it in a bag of rice. i’ve used that on a friends phone. i got it to turn on but the battery wouldn’t charge and shortly died. i got a fresh battery from a friend and now it will turn on but the screen doesn’t work at all. i was able to hook it to my computer and get all my info off thankfully. so for now it’s bag in the ole bag-o-rice for my pearl. my phone company said they wanted a $150 deductable for an insurance claim. what a bunch of BS.

#12347 jewel on July 9th, 2009 at 2:17 am

A few months ago my one-month-old BB javelin fell out of my back pocket of my jeans and into the toilet… it was completely soaked and I tried to turn it on numerous times… It turned on once or twice and the keys typed all out of whack. As I drove home from work I dried it with my car heater and managed to use it for about a minute or two. I actually made a phone call then it shut off. Got home and put a blowdryer to it for a bit. Finally someone told me to take the battery out and put it in a bag of rice. I left it overnight and in the morning it worked just fine. All the outside buttons were a bit messed (i had to press them pretty hard) but now they work as good as new. The screen is fine, keyboards perfect, and cameras good too. Hopefully my story will give some of you relief and hope for your water-damaged phones! Good Luck guys! Rice is probably the best idea!

#12374 blakey on July 9th, 2009 at 7:10 pm

ok so my brand new…month old blackberry curve 8900 was in my friends bag and got covered in gatorade…it was probably covered in it for about 15 minutes. anyways i took it to the locker room and blow dried it…didnt work. when i got home i put it in a bowl of rice and kept it there for about hours. it was working fine, the screen had some damage and would shut off randomly but other than that it was ok…or so i thought. a few days ago (about 2-3 weeks after the incident) it just shut off and now it wont turn on. however, i have not lost hope bc the red light will come on if i take out the battery and reinsert it, it also turns on if i plug it into the computer. any suggestions or ideas on what i should do from here…out $200+ with no phone??

Cooper
#12393 Cooper on July 10th, 2009 at 8:45 am

do a complete system wipe and see if you can get it back up and running. The problem is that with sports drinks, sodas and beer there is residue left on the components after drying.

rice works for water because everything evaporates.

Good luck

so… my bb flip sat outside in the rain for about 3 hours. not a hard rain but rain none the less. so i find it. notice the screen doesnt work at all, both screens internal and external just show heartbreaking darnkness. stupid me half drunk from the night before decides to call people to see if everything else is still in working condition( which it is). so i used the phone for about 3 mins on the phone. then take out the battery. so i get home. so i spray it down with a can of air and now its sitting in a container of rice. should i have any hope? or is there sumthing better i should be doing?

#12424 Cris on July 12th, 2009 at 4:43 am

Ok…i was cleaning some flea bites with rubbing alcohol and some of it spelled on the keys. It wasn’t much on it but i blow off the liquid before it could stink but the letters and stuff started acting stupid, so i took the battery out and blow it off. I put it back together and it turned on but froze when it got to my sim card password. IS My phone save- able or am i screwed!!!!

#12572 blakey on July 19th, 2009 at 2:07 pm

thanks cooper! how do I do a system wipe?
yeah I figured gatorade made it that much worse but if the system wipe doesn’t work should I rinse it in water and then submerge it in rice right away? I hate to do that but its the only other thing I can think to do after I try a system wipe and taking it to the store

#12574 stressedoutmom on July 19th, 2009 at 5:52 pm

A bottle of water leaked out of the loosened cap into the stroller pocket where my Storm was sitting during an outing yesterday. As soon as I realized the water was dripping out of the pocket, I grabbed my Storm (and said a few choice words in front of my mother-in-law)and started drying it off, pulled the battery, etc.

Today everything works EXCEPT for the menu button. I have the battery out again. Any ideas?

Okay, so… My blackberry. I spilled a whole nalgene bottle of water on my blackberry. >.< But i took the battery out and dried it, then stuck it back in 15 min later and stuck it in the charger…. Thinking that it might help. Bad idea. I decided just to leave it out over night open and tried to put it back together in the morning and it only flashed red…. The screen didn’t even turn on. So i took it to school and my teacher told me to stick it in rice. Right now it’s still in the rice and i put the battery back in and the screen worked. But.. I don’t know what to do. Should i just leave it in the rice over night and see what happens? I don’t think i short circuted it though if it’s still turning on… :/

Cooper
#12739 Cooper on July 27th, 2009 at 6:49 am

If there is still moisture on the components and they are receiving power there is the possibility for damage.

I would stick your BlackBerry in a bucket of rice for a few days to make sure it is completely dried out. Do not use the phone during this period.

Here’s the deal. i had a BB since sometime in march, it got wet. i got it replaced a couple days later because it was under insurance (this was yesterday). when they replaced my phone they gave me the same battery so the sensor strip was already red. today after work i went to the beach, stupid. (i must have been a bad person in a previous life because i have a lot of stuff happen) i bought this BB with my own money. a wave slammed into my leg (it went about 20ft higher up the beach than any wave that had come as i was walking, hence the karma comment) and splashed onto my leg (the one with my BB in it of course, and within 5 seconds i had the battery out (thank you adrenaline). this was roughly an hour ago and it appears to be dry, i want to put the battery in but im not sure if i should wait until tomorrow (a contributing factor to that other than my significant impatience is the hot date thats going to think i blew her off) the pressing issue remains, it appears to be completely dry, so do i wait? or is it safe?

#13037 Brittani on August 7th, 2009 at 5:09 am

So, the other day, I had my phone in the bathroom while taking a shower. I hadn’t used it or anything while I was in the shower, nor did I touch it when I got out. It was still working just fine. I went to my room and sat down for a few minutes. My boyfriend came in and I went to turn my phone on silent and it shut off on me. It kept shutting off and turning back on. So I took the back off and saw that water had somehow gotten into it and I immediately took out the battery and dried it off and dried off the inside of the phone. The next day, I put the battery back in. The phone will turn on and everything, and I even have text messages and can receive incoming calls. The problem is that none of my buttons are working. I can press them all I want, but nothing is happening. I removed the battery and SIM card, and I’m noticing that there is still a little moisture. So, I’ve got the battery and card out, and my phone is currently sitting in a bowl of rice. Do you think that my buttons will eventually work again?

Cooper
#13042 Cooper on August 7th, 2009 at 8:39 am

Fingers crossed – the problem is that you put the battery in and powered it on while the moisture was still on the components – this could have caused a short in the system that affected the keys.

I know it is in our nature to want to test the phone right away, but if this kind of thing ever happens again – put it in the rice right away and do not turn it on at all.

Good Luck!

Hi, I was kinda buzzed and left my new blackberry storm by the sink while I brushed my teeth & washed my face early this morning. I noticed the phone was kinda wet so I took the battery & wiped it dry & turned it back on. When I got to my room, I was responding to some texts and it froze. I had to restart it & I noticed all the water spots inside the phone. I got up like 6 hrs later & googled water damage & found this site. I just put my phone into a jar of rice without the battery & sim card of course but I did try to blow dry it 1st on cool but it didn’t do anything. Since it was minor water inside the phone, will the rice trick work & nothing will be damaged in my phone? How long will it take it to completely dry? I’ve had this phone for like a week & a half. I paid alot for it since it was unlocked for T-Mobile. Thank you for trying to help!

WHAT DO I DO?! I CANT LIVE WITHOUT MY PHONE!!!

#13752 Cooper on September 3rd, 2009 at 9:03 am

That does sound like water or moisture damage – you could try wiping the device and reloading the os through desktop manager but I suspect a hardware failure which means a replacement most likely.

Cooper
#13757 Cooper on September 3rd, 2009 at 9:33 am

Stick it in the rice for a couple days — then plug it into desktop manager and wipe – reload your os.

Good luck.

Not sure that your issue is moisture related 2 days in rice should be enough — try doing a battery pull when it is all dry – pull while the device is on and replace after 30 seconds

If you are not seeing any dramatic change in your battery power, life etc then go ahead and keep using it. Those stickers are VERY sensitive and many times indicate moisture/ water damage when minimal moisture is introduced.

The problem with putting the battery back in right away is that it sends a current through the wet device components and damages them even further. I am afraid you are out of luck if you are not able to get to power on now.

This morning my bb Curve got a splash of beef broth on the top left side around the speaker/mute button. It was on at the time and the screen turned white moments after it got wet. I got it out of its case and took the battery out as quickly as possible. None of the battery or key areas got wet, just the top, but it’s broth not water. It’s been drying all day. Should I stick it top down in some rice when I get home too? Am I out of luck since it was soup? Thanks!

So I dropped BB 8900 into a sink with running water on Friday night, immediately took out the battery, blew dry the whole thing for about 15-20 minutes with cold air, then left it with the rice bucket. Took it out this morning after about 60 hours. Everything is good so far, except for the call buttons – I can’t pick up or end a call, even though the phone can receive it just right. The trackball moves, but doesn’t register when clicked. The menu button doesn’t work either. All other keys work well, able to receive texts and emails……

Is there any chance that the rest of the phone will recover? What other steps can I take, besides sticking the phone back into the rice bucket?

After one day, I couldn’t resist I started up the phone after cleaning it thoroughly.

I took the battery out, dried with blower, got on here saw posts put it in a bag of rice and set it by the window for sunlight etc. Been 30 hours and just tested it, my phone turns on, but seems to flicker with the power…should i let it dry longer or try to do a wash and redry? or should i go to att and try to get a new phone (took out insurance on it)

I was cleaning my pool and when I bent over to pour in some clorine the phone popped off of my belt and right to the bottom of the pool. I quickly stripped off my shoes, shirt and shorts and jumped in and got it. It was about 7 seconds that it was in the pool. The light was completly red so I removed the battery and dried it off. I used a hair dryer to dry it off and left it on the counter on a towel for 48 hours. The phone does work but the track ball is not. I took it to the technition and he told me that the moisture sensor was activated but this could have been from a rain drop. My question is will I still be under warantee if I return it now with the slightly pink moisture sensor? Th phone still works but I cant read email etc… The tech on the phone is sending me one out today but I don’t want them to come back and charge me for it. What do you think?

After Sunday afternoon and Monday, I put back in my battery to see where my blackberry is in the rice healing process. As opposed to monday, the phone booted up no problem at all. The problem seems to be that none of the buttons on the keypad function thus far. To test the phone, I used my land line to make a call, the phone received the call but I couldn’t press the button to answer. Now the trackball works just fine. It’s just the button functionality that seems to be not working.

So I put it back in the rice again, hoping maybe one more day in the rice will dry it out further. That would make it 2.5 days I guess.

Do you think there’s some hope still?

#14849 Matt on October 20th, 2009 at 11:44 am

Yes! phone started working after another day in the rice. only problem i have is that now the y key doesnt respond. any suggestions? should i try an alcohol bath or try to break my phone down and clean?

#14858 Janet on October 20th, 2009 at 1:38 pm

I think I pretty much know the answer to my own question, about a week ago my son dumped a full mug of coffee all over the place and soaking my BB 8330. The coffee had some of that vanilla creamer in it which is really sweet so im going to assume gets sticky when its dry. Anyway I dried it out the best i could for not having any tools to take the housing appart (Blow dryer, and left the battery and back off overnight). when i reassembled it, it turned on fine, the track ball still scrolls to the apps, but when i push it to select nothing happens and none of the other buttons work as well.
So after reading this page i realize that my phone is most likely hooped but I was just wondering (other that dumping hot coffee on it) what caused the buttons to stop working? Did the phone short circuit

#14903 Cooper on October 22nd, 2009 at 9:42 am

@Illa The only thing I can suggest is that you do a battery pull for a good duration – perhaps 10 minutes and see if that corrects the keyboard typing extra letters in your password issue.

Other than that there is not much that can be done.

Entering the password incorrectly too many times will wipe your phone and bring it back to factory default. Starting from scratch while being a pain in the a** would still eliminate the need to buy a new device.

Cooper
#14907 Cooper on October 22nd, 2009 at 9:54 am

@Janet – yes the liquid damage and or creamer that managed to find its way into the device has most likely damaged the hardware to the point it acts buggy. I am afraid you will need a new device.

Cooper
#14908 Cooper on October 22nd, 2009 at 9:57 am

@matt I suggest doing a full back up of your device then wiping it to see if you can bring back the functionality of that key. If that does not work then taking it apart might be an option. Not sure how much that will accomplish though.

Cooper
#14909 Cooper on October 22nd, 2009 at 10:00 am

@laurence try pulling the battery and leaving it out for a good 10 minutes – replace and see if your keys work again. Water is the BlackBerry devices worst enemy. Most of your device may be operable but the circuits for the keyboard may have been fried.

Cooper
#14922 Cooper on October 22nd, 2009 at 10:16 am

@Walter – unfortunately water damage voids your warranty immediately. It is one of the tricks carriers use to force you to buy new product.

Cooper
#14924 Cooper on October 22nd, 2009 at 10:18 am

@Matt If you have the insurance I would say just get a new one – you may be able to recover that device but a fresh Berry is better than a soggy one =)

Cooper
#14925 Cooper on October 22nd, 2009 at 10:19 am

@Ron – unfortunately I think your device is toast — another day or two in the rice before turning it on could have probably prevented that =(

Unsweetened (thank god) iced tea spilled on my jacket, phone in the right pocket. Obviously got some water in it, because it shut off. Powers on, gets to home screen, trackball scroll works. Nothing else does, but I have the side buttons disabled. After a min or so screen goes dark, nothing happens, but will buzz when new texts come in. After two attempts, used a space heater (3 feet away, on low) and saw condensation on the screen. Switched to a fan, then 20 min later dry rice.

I will miss the keyboard since I had an ancient sprint a900 before, but will wait until Sun (5 days) to power it on. I hope my turning it on immediately after the shut down didn’t fry it. If so I know that the keyboard can be replaced, at a cost, a big one!

Hi, my BB Storm got wet and I had turned it off and took the batery out and blow dried it and when I turned it back on it had the spots on the screen it was working but then it started freezing, the screen would flip so it would be backwards and I would have to turn it off (which means pull the battery out) and now it wont turn on. It now says JUM Error 528 I dont know what that means, will it EVER work again???? Please help me!

Cooper
#15088 Cooper on October 28th, 2009 at 7:46 am

@Jessica

Unfortunately you have nuked your operating system and possibly damaged your device components. In the future if you get any kind of liquid exposure do not blow dry your phone or turn it on.

instead find a bag of rice as soon as possible and stick your BlackBerry in there for a few days. This is your best bet for saving the device.

You can try to recover your operating system by following the steps here:

Ok, so last Saturday my Bold fell into the toilet. It was only in there a few seconds. I did as everyone else has, pulled the battery, shook the crap out of the phone to get as much of the water out as I could and then used towels to wipe everything down. I wasn’t able to do much else at the time because I was out for the evening so I kept the battery out and put the phone in my purse. When I got home I placed it in a baggy full of rice and left it alone for about a day and a half. Unfortunately, being impatient, I wanted to see if it would work so I popped in the battery. It powered on and seemed to be working ok, except for the trackball. So, I pulled the battery again and popped it back into the rice and left it again for another day. Problem is now, I can’t get the phone to boot up at all. I’m thinking my battery is toast.
I plugged it into the wall charger to see if perhaps the battery was drained but after several hours of leaving it alone all that happened was the led light came on, stayed red for about 10 seconds and then the screen flashed on white and showed a battery with a blue lightning bolt through it, then it disappeared. I even tried to see if I could charge it through my USB cable but got the same result.
Do you think it’s the battery that’s toast or is my phone a goner?

Cooper
#15143 Cooper on October 29th, 2009 at 11:22 am

@Pixie Ok there is still hope for your phone. That symbol means that your battery is dead or next to dead. USB chargers will not be able to deliver enough juice to get it going again. If you have a high quality phone cradle you can try that or the wall outlet for an extended period of time.

In most cases this does not indicate a problem with the phone but rather a problem with the battery only. Try these steps.

1. plug the phone into the wall and do a battery pull – then replace after 10 minutes – see if there is any activity on your phone.

2. Leave the phone plugged into the wall overnight

3. Get a new battery

#15144 Ludi on October 29th, 2009 at 11:23 am

Hi, okay so last night I was out with some friends downtown and it was pouring rain. My silicone case was all wet and slippery and my phone ended up slipping out of my hands into a puddle. Of course I started freaking out but I took out the battery and just dried it as well as my phone with my shirt (it was a moment of panic, and I obviously didn’t expect this to take care of the problem but I just wanted to see if it worked). Trying to turn on my phone (more than one time) probably did more harm than good, but whatever. The first few times it turned on properly and then it only showed the red light, and then finally it wouldn’t turn on at all, at which point I stopped trying. Anyways, I was out at a concert so I wasn’t able to really do anything for about 3-4 hours. In the meantime I wrapped my phone and all it’s individual parts in a towel, put it in my purse and tried not to stress out until I got home cause there was really nothing I could do. Once I did get home, I stuck my battery and phone separately in a bowl of brown rice (it’s the only kind of rice I have, does it make any difference?). This was last night at 3 AM and it is now 9 AM so as of now I guess I’m just going to leave it for as long as possible. Any advice on what my next move should be?

Cooper
#15149 Cooper on October 29th, 2009 at 11:38 am

Best bet is to leave it there for a couple days and DO NOT turn it on to check.

By turning it on repeatedly you send electric current through wet components and fry important things on the inside.

After a couple days – cross your fingers and hope for the best.

Good luck!

don’t know if anybody can help me .. but I would be curious if this happened to anybody else ..

My blackberry 8230 flip phone was still in my pants pocket when it went thru both the Wash and Dryer .. complete cycles. Don’t know about the washer, but the back remained on until the dryer mode (i think) but I found the back off the phone, out of my pants pocket, just lying there on the bottom of the dryer.

I figured it was already “dry” so, I pulled the battery to check, and it didn’t seem wet so I put it back in and tried to boot .. it did not. Right now, I’m just letting it sit for a while – this happened early this morning.

Anyway .. Kudos to those with insurance and replacement plans .. I never pay for those :/

#15751 Kim on November 19th, 2009 at 4:05 pm

hey cooper is was wondering if you could help me out,

so on saturday night (it in now thursday), i dropped my phone in the toilet. It was in there for about 5 seconds, and then i disassembled it and towel dried it. Because i was out, i left it to air dry for 4-6 hours. When I got home I turned my phone on and it was working, except that the keypad was confusing letters — after about 10 minutes or so all the keys were working fine. Justin case though, i put my phone into rice overnight and left it for about 24 hours. Then i turned on my phone and it was working fine, minues a little bit of crackling in the speakers and water in the screen. To be safe I disassembled my phone and put it back into the rice and checked if it was working every 24 hours or so (and it was). Now here is the big problem: yesterday my phone was working perfectly (no water in the sreen, keypad and speakers were good. But my phone died, so when i got home i plugged it into the wall charger and the red light went on for about 10 seconds, and then a white screen came up with that battery symbol with the blue lightning bolt. I figured my battery was just completely drained, but again to be safe i left it in rice for a couple hours. Then, I charged my phone overnight. When i tried it again today, the same thing was happening (lightning bolt).

I’ve tried plugging my phone into my computer, just to see if any of it is still working. When i plug it in with AND without the battery the red light comes on. But still when i plug it into the wall charger I just get the battery symbol.

I would really appreciate any advice you have. PLEASE dont tellme my phone is dead :(

Joe
#15756 Joe on November 19th, 2009 at 7:45 pm

Mallory, it usually takes about 48 hours to completely dry. Keep it off, and take the battery out. That should make the process go faster.

Don’t worry about the red line. My old Curve never got wet, and it was red as red can be. Humidity usually does it.

Joe
#15757 Joe on November 19th, 2009 at 7:51 pm

Kim, reading through threads about this issue, it sounds like you should just get a new battery.

If that doesn’t work, you’ll probably have to wipe your device. Follow this advice: http://forums.crackberry.com/f3/how-do-i-recover-dead-blackberry-32322/

But try a new battery first, by all means. Maybe even take it into a store and see if they can test your device with a new battery before you buy a new one.

I was putting a screen protector on my phone the other day and put windex on so there would be no bubbles and i wiped it clean and when i put the battery in there was a huge spot on the screen i put it in rice for a day or so and the spot got smaller is there any chance that the spot will go away? will it go away if I take it apart and put it in rice?

#15764 Ana on November 20th, 2009 at 2:01 am

Hi.

Today, I dropped my phone in a clean toilet and immediately snatched it out. I estimate it was in for about 2 seconds. I pulled the battery, and tried using a hair dryer on the exposed back. Then I found this thread, and put the phone without battery in a bowl of rice.

After a while, I tried putting in the battery and powering it on, and it came on alright, the trackball was responsive, and as I was cautiously moving the trackball around, it went to the screen that happens when you start to type the name of someone to call. I couldn’t exit out of it so I just pulled the battery again and put the phone back in the rice.

A couple of hours later, I tried putting the battery in again, and it powered up just fine, the trackball even more responsive, and the buttons seemed to e working. However, the screen went black, and the keyboard stayed lit up. I could not get the screen back up.

I pulled the battery and the SIM card this time and the BB is back in the rice. I’ve only had the thing for about 45 days, and the battery shows that it has water damage, so I don’t know if I’ll be able to exchange it. Is there anything else I can do? Am I totally screwed?

Thanks for any help!

Cooper
#15780 Cooper on November 20th, 2009 at 10:03 am

Unfortunately you may have been a little quick to power the device on. It is so tempting to just see if it is working but this is actually what causes the most problems.

I fear that you may be out of luck if the screen does not turn back on and water damage absolutely voids your warranty =(

There is a chance that that moisture will dry up but if the seals around the edges are firmly in place it may not happen =(

Hello,
I just had a huge scare similar to a lot of your stories. Last night I was washing my dishes from dinner with my phone under my arm and I accidentally dropped it into the sink. I immediately removed the battery and dried it out. I did not really know what to do in the situation so I popped the battery back in a few times to see if it would turn on. Unfortunately, it did not. The red light in the top right hand corner would just stay red. I took the back cover and battery out and kept it out. My screen was foggy and it looked like my phone was toast. I googled what to do and I found the rice solution. I took the battery out and put that in the rice separately. I waited a little over a day but my impatience got the best of me. I put my battery in and turned it on and it worked fine! I looked at my battery and the water indicator is still the same pink sticker with little red x’s ( apparently a red stripe shows water damage) It is such a relief but I hope nothing goes wrong over the next few days. I had a skin on my phone and i kept some money and my id in there too so that may have helped prevent water damage. Oh and when putting the phone in the rice some rice got into the phone itself. No worries just shake the phone gently and the rice will come out of the little hole!

Yesterday, I was stupid enough to leave my Blackberry in my pants pocket when I was doing laundry. When I took it out of the washer, the screen was filled with water. I am in day 2 of the “resurrection” process. Is it still possible that it will come back from the dead since the screen was filled with water? Please and thank you!

#16315 Cooper on December 7th, 2009 at 2:17 pm

@matt I am keeping my fingers crossed for you but I am not confident that your device is going to come back — If you clearly saw large amounts of water in the display I suggest giving it an extra day or two in the rice to be absolutely sure it is as dry as possible before switching the power on.

#16331 Matt on December 8th, 2009 at 9:20 am

Day 2: The water is all gone now with just a few water stains on the screen which is no big deal. The phone still remains covered in rice.

Day 6? I don’t remember. On day 3, I tried the battery and it worked. Late Day 3, I activated it and it had a few minor glitches and screen defects. But today, there is absolutely nothing wrong. Everything in my Blackberry is fully functional.

I took cover off battery out and since i was in the bathroom and the furnace was on i sat the phone on the heater. I started drying rest of the phone off. I thought i got it all dryed off. I put battery back in. It turned on but i couldnt get to my messages. It would go to my contact list and that was about it. I turned it back off took battery and card out and all of its in a bowl of rice. I have had the phone 45 days or so. Do you think i might be able to save it? I dropped my blackberry pearl in the toilet last Wed(Dec.30th). It was less than 5 secs submerged in H20. The first mistake I made was after taking the battery out and drying it, I put it back in to see if it worked. Of course it didn’t. Mistake number 2…I used the blowdryer for a few seconds. Tried it again, and red light came on and went off. After that I remembered hearing about using rice. So I dropped it in a container of dry white rice without sim card and battery. Still impatient after a few hours I tried it one last time. All that happened was the red light came on for a 3 seconds and turned off.
So I decided to leave it in the rice for a few days….On the evening of Jan. 1st. I powered it up and ……………It Worked. I only had the phone less than a month. It works like new and I haven’t had any problems with it. Thank goodness the the mistakes I made in the beginning didn’t fry it. I Have learned avaluable lesson b/c I didn’t have insurance. The rice really worked.

#17160 Greg on January 3rd, 2010 at 5:06 am

Cooper,

My blackberry curve has the same problems. Even a tiny bit of humidity seemed to do it. (In my case, running at the gym and leaving the curve in my pocket) The curve would turn on, boot up, then the screen would turn off.

Sometimes it restores by itself, but I will try the rice trick to see if I can restore it quicker.

I lost my BB 8100 at the weekend, checked everywhere at home, checked at work yesterday no joy. Checked server and saw it went offline Saturday afternoon (really weird time as battery would never run out that quick), figured someone had picked it up and pulled the SIM out.

Retracing steps in my head for Saturday and realised that I had built a snowman about an hour before it died. Hmmm I wonder, popped back to snowman location this morning and found device lying in the snow! 3 days in melting snow not great :( Have got it in rice now but fear my BB has sent it’s last message (RIP).

@Mario I am sorry to hear that – fingers crossed that the rice can bring it back to life!

#17627 ohhhnooo on January 12th, 2010 at 8:25 pm

I got my first bb 8900 in december then someone at school spilled a cup of water on it it was only for about 2 seconds i immediatly pulled out the battery and let it sit, but it pretty much didnt work when i went to try it a couple hours later. I ended up getting a new one, and you think i would have learned my lesson not to leave my phone on the table, but sadly today i spilled sprite on it. i grabbed it immediatly and tookout the battery and dried it. it doesnt appear wet. im at school so i have no rice to put it in :( is there any hope, this one was just replaced not even a month ago. also it shows no water damage anywhere, not even the little sticker things. i have insurance if i was wondering if it is possible to get away with saying the phone is malfunctioning to possibly get it replaced. Is their any other way that they would be able to prove that water was what damaged the phone?

Cooper
#17650 Cooper on January 13th, 2010 at 10:12 am

@ohhhnooo

Unfortunately this time it was not water that damaged the device it was Sprite. It will probably be pretty obvious that some kind of liquid had entered the device as Sprite leaves a sticky residue after it dries up.

The rules state that “liquid damage” voids the warranty so it does not pertain only to water. You can absolutely try and sneak it past them but I am not sure that you will succeed.

hi so I just got the new blackberry bold its 3 weeks old and I dropped it in the toilet. Unfortunately I dont have the warrenty right now I wish I did. But I got it out within 5 seconds. immediately ripped out the battery and sim card and put it in a bag of uncooked rice. I also went to REI and got the silica gel pack type thing they have. (I hear it works well and im willing to try anything) this is the second phone I’ve had get water damage. Is there any hope for my poor blackberry. Does anyone have anymore suggestions either?

#17743 Cooper on January 14th, 2010 at 4:43 pm

@MyPoorBB

Just keep it in the rice for a few days – DO NOT TURN IT ON – be patient or you will brick it. It should be dried out and work after a few days.

#17771 pete on January 15th, 2010 at 12:54 pm

hey dropped my bb curve in some water. I took out the battery sim and mem card dried it off as best i could and when i got home i put it in rice. Its the next day and it wasnt that wet from the start i got it out real quick, but when i put the battery back in it wont let me turn it on, it just flashes a red light over and over. what do i do

#17784 cj on January 16th, 2010 at 4:08 am

In the morning i was getting ready for work and as i was getting dressed my bb fell in the toilet…fortunatley the toilet was clean..i took the battery out and attempted to dry it with a towel i kept the battery out for most of the day i got home and set the battery and the phone seperate and put them under a fan for about an hour…i plugged it in the charger and it was on..but i couldn’t type certain keys (i have the blackberry storm) and then it cut off and hasn’t worked since…would putting it in rice still help?

#17796 Brianna on January 17th, 2010 at 12:15 pm

Hi! unfortunately yesterday afternoon my phone was left in my driveway for abt an hour & got rained on lightly. When I found it I immediately took it apart and dried any outside moisture off. I just found this article (less than 24 hrs later) & have put it in rice. However, I did put the battery back in once to see if it would work. Everything looked and worked fine except the key pad. Is there still hope for my phone since i put the battery in once & did not immediately put it in rice?

#17801 Deshawn Hawkins on January 17th, 2010 at 6:52 pm

Hey My blackberry was in my pocket and when I pulled it out to check my messages it wouldnt let me select anything. The trackball moves but doesnt select but the keyboard and side buttons doesn’t do anything. The phone come’s on fine but I cant select anything or answer calls. I was told that by it being in my pocket that it could’ve gotten moisture damage do to humidity. If I try the rice trick will it work? I’ve tried letting it sit opened(battery out) for 10 hours. HElp please. Thanx

#17814 Cooper on January 18th, 2010 at 10:10 am

@Deshawn You could try the rice trick – If that does not work try wiping out your device and reloading the Operating System from scratch.

My phone just fell into the river of water that is currently outside my house in the gutter. It was in the water for a few seconds before i pulled it out. It was working when i pulled it out but i immediately took out the battery and tried to dry it off with a hair dryer. i turned it on and it was pretty much working but then the screen turned dark and i took the battery out again. it’s currently in a bowl of rice. is there anything else i should do? and how much of a chance do i have of it working again?

#17998 Val on January 23rd, 2010 at 1:16 pm

Last night I was at the bar and my BB was in my sweater pocket I turned to quickly and my pocket hit the wall and into the toilet my phone fell… It was there for maybe 5 seconds, i immediately took it out and removed the battery dried that off and placed paper towel in the back of the phone…. one of my friends grabbed it and placed the battery in it and tried turning it on… I took out the battery right away and brought it to my car and left it laid out. I couldn’t get to any rice except this morning at 9am… it is now sitting in the rice… I had tried turning it on when I was on my way home this morning and the only light that turned on was my LCD light it shut off and when i push the on button it turns the LCD light back red… is there a chance to save my BB or do i get a new one?

#18074 Mike on January 27th, 2010 at 3:28 pm

I have to admit, before seeing this site i had no hope, but here goes. I dropped my phone in a snow bank on December 23, and we just found it today (January 27) – it’s been below freezing most of that time, other than a few days, and I’ve taken the battery out and put the phone on a towel to dry (didn’t even try to start it), and plan to put it in a bowl of rice tonight – is there any hope?

#18111 naomi on January 28th, 2010 at 4:47 pm

#18158 Mel on January 31st, 2010 at 1:16 am

So the trackball on my BB curve scrolls but won’t depress to select anything. I think I may have gotten water on it (I was washing dishes when I got an important call and just answered without thinking) but I didn’t think I’d gotten it in the trackball because I only saw it on the screen. Regardless I have this issue. Any suggestions?

#18163 Liana on January 31st, 2010 at 4:17 am

Well, I answer the phone while I was on the shower, I know, bad idea… My BB curve 8310 got a little wet. I remove the battery try to let it dry, then pull back, it works, i saw the screen, i try to call the number it rangs, but I cannot answer calls or mark any letter, number, select any option, etc. I remove the batery again, let it dry again for at leats 24 hours, now I am trying the rice, hope that work, I really miss my bb :(

#18188 Cooper on February 1st, 2010 at 11:37 am

I would take the trackball out and take a close look at the connections below it. Look for any kind of dust or dirt build up as well as corrosion or liquid damage.

I JUST GOT MY BB A COUPLE DAYS AGO, I DROPED IT IN THE TOLIET FOR LIKE3 SECONDS I TOOK THE BATTERY OUT FIVE MINUTES LATER I PUT IT BACK IN. iT STARED DILING NUMBERS BY ITSELF AND WHEN I WOULD CALL IT WOULDNT RING TEN MIN LATER I WAS ABLE TO MAKE CALLS BUT I CANT SEE MY MESSASGES IT STILL DOES CRAZY THINGS. DO I STILL HAVE A CHANCE FOR IT TO WORK GOOD?

Cooper
#18229 Cooper on February 2nd, 2010 at 10:01 am

@belinda if you got it into some rice there is still a chance. Do not turn it on again for a couple days to ensure that all the components are absolutely dry.

When they are wet and you power the phone on – that is what cause the serious damage.

#18241 Vilma161 on February 2nd, 2010 at 12:58 pm

This morning my bb tour accidently slipped into my bathroom sink while a small drip of water was running..of course i went into a panic and immediately removed the battery.I tried to dry my phone as much as possible and i inserted the battery back in.. The phone turns on and everything seems fine..but the trackball doesnt click.. it scrolls up down and side to side but when i try to click on something ..nothing happens.. Should I be crying right now?

#18249 belindA on February 2nd, 2010 at 7:44 pm

i put it in rice all last night should i wait a lil bit longer???its actually working good now

#18274 mom2boy on February 3rd, 2010 at 7:09 pm

my lovely son dropped my bb in the bathtub. My older daughter grabbed it and ran it to me fast. I took off the back and dried it with a towel and it seemed to have little/no water inside. I blowdried it briefly (i didn’t know better) but then stopped when i saw a small amoutn of condensation starting on the edges. Came in the kitchen and tried it, red light and lights under keys light up but no screen. Pulled the battery back out, did a google search and found this site so it and the battery are in rice now.

What are my chances? I noticed the water indicator on the battery isn’t completely red, just a line through the white. Does that mean not much water got in?

Cooper
#18297 Cooper on February 4th, 2010 at 10:09 am

@mom2boy You should be ok if you don’t power on the device for a couple days – just leave it in the rice and let it do its thing.

The big problems are caused by turning the device on too soon. be patient and you will have the best chance for recovery.

It is important to note that that red on the water indicator has now voided your warranty so keep that in mind when bringing the device in for repair as the techs will absolutely use that as an excuse (even though the damage may not be severe).

#18345 Sarah on February 6th, 2010 at 12:22 pm

My blackberry pearl flip 8220 just came back to life this morning after falling in the bathtub 24 hrs earlier!

I immediately took it out and dried it with a towel, then took out the battery and dried inside. Took a blowdryer to it on the ‘cool’ setting for a good 5 minutes.

Then I put the battery back in the see if it was working…the outside screen was working, as was the actual phone because I could receive messages and whatnot, but the inside screen (flipped open) was completely black. So I buried it in uncooked rice for a couple of hours, tried again…no change. I am impatient so I tried every couple of hours with no luck. Left it over night, and voila! Everything is working perfectly!

Thanks for the tips!!!!!!! :)

#18346 Sarah on February 6th, 2010 at 12:26 pm

Oh i forgot to mention that I took a vaccuum to it after the first couple hours to get the water out from behind the screen heehehe

#18361 TheRiceTrickWorks on February 7th, 2010 at 9:37 am

Just to let you know I tried the rice trick and it worked. My Curve got wet (submerged) I pulled it out of the water and watched the screen flicker and go out. I immediately pulled the battery and let it dry about 4 hours. Put the battery back in and fired it up. The backlight wouldn’t come on and the screen looked fogged from behind. I took the battery out again and buried the phone in a bowl of rice overnight. Replaced battery this morning and all is working 100%! Thanks Joe!!!!!!!!

#18364 Whoops on February 7th, 2010 at 7:19 pm

I was installing the invisibleSHIELD on my Curve 8900 and I guess while I was squeezing out the excess liquid, some of it got behind my screen. Now, my bb is sitting in a bowl of rice but since it wasn’t the applicator fluid and not water, should I do any extra cleaning?

Anyone failed like I did?

#18462 bailey on February 11th, 2010 at 12:42 am

how long is too long.. before you should but the phone in rice?

Cooper
#18467 Cooper on February 11th, 2010 at 9:40 am

@bailey get it in there as soon as possible and leave it for a couple days without turning it on. I am guessing at this point that it has been a while since the device got wet.

Rice will not hurt it and at best it will bring back your Berry!

#18495 Stephanie on February 12th, 2010 at 2:43 am

hey guys… so I was just recently cleaning my blackberry bold with rubbing alcohol… but then noticed the screen was fogged up so i took the battery out and blow dryed it for a while but then i put the battery back in to see if it dried up a little and took it back out and i did the same process one more time but this time the phone didnt turn back on… it is now sitting on rice…do you think it will turn back on or is my phone basically done with?

#18585 Mckenna on February 15th, 2010 at 10:50 pm

ok so my blackberry isnt working, i can move the ball but when i click it, it wont click. and when i try to click like the ball to view something it wont. and my buttons work and when i want to call someone and press the green button it doesnt work its comes out coming as me or something. and i cant view anything. my green light works and i can still get messages, but it wont let me view them. its sitting in rice right now. it does have water damage. what else can i do?

#18629 Perry on February 17th, 2010 at 10:39 am

I dropped my bb curve face down in about 1/2 an inch of shower water today! I pulled it out RIGHT away, but my batter indicated water damage. It worked fine for about five minutes and than went crazy! I couldnt open my messages. I just kept getting the # key every time. I blow dried it on cool for a few minutes, and than let it sit out for another ten until I could get it in some rice. It is sitting in minute rice (dont know if it matters what kind of rice) right now and I plan on leaving it there for a few days. Any encouraging words of hope Cooper? or am I screwed?!thx!

Cooper
#18636 Cooper on February 17th, 2010 at 2:27 pm

@Perry you absolutely have a chance to save the device just be patient and do not turn it on or take it out of the rice for a couple days.

Good luck!

#18682 Ron on February 19th, 2010 at 8:11 am

I slightly got some water onto the trackball. The phone works, however, pressing the trackball and keypad doesn’t. I put the phone in rice after 8 hours due to limited accessibility. Even now, the phone does turn on, but yet the the keys and trackball doesn’t function as it should. Should I keep it in rice for a couple of days or do I have to change my motherboard?

#18684 Ron on February 19th, 2010 at 8:30 am

I have a similar issue with Mckenna. However, I didn’t have access to rice till 8 hours later. I have turned on the phone from time to time and the keys work after a 30mins then dies out again. I have left it in rice. Can the phone will be recovered or do I have to change the phone (keypad and trackball)? Thanks.

Cooper
#18686 Cooper on February 19th, 2010 at 9:54 am

@Ron There is a possibility of recovery but the real issue here is that you keep turning the device on. When you turn it on and there is moisture on the components etc it can cause damage.

You must must must fight the urge to power your phone up and “see if it is working” – that is what will break it!

Cooper
#18692 Cooper on February 19th, 2010 at 10:40 am

@ron – try a battery pull – while the device is on – pull the battery and replace after 30 seconds.

If that does not fix the keyboard and the trackball you are most likely out of luck.

#18840 Mi on February 25th, 2010 at 11:25 am

I dropped my bb8900 in the toliet after quickly retriving it I dried it up and put it in rice. After several days it was working fine… then the screen got wet again with some snow! Ugh! Now the red light blinks and the screen goes completely white. I thought it was dead, but my alarm went off the other day. Is there still hope? Would I be able to replace the screen?

Cooper
#18873 Cooper on February 26th, 2010 at 11:32 am

@mi – replacing the screen is pricey and almost as much as the BlackBerry itself – I would only suggest it if you are early on in your contract and will not be able to upgrade any time soon.

#18914 Mike on February 28th, 2010 at 1:00 pm

I put the battery in my bb 10 hours(last night) after it was submerged..
This morning i woke up and read this. Now im scared i “Short circuited” it.
What can i do, it is my life.

#18979 Gina on March 2nd, 2010 at 9:36 am

Thanks to the rice trick (and this writeup in particular), I am not having to replace my $500 Blackberry.

What happened was… I was in a lovely Chicago airport that did not have counters in the bathrooms. I sat my purse on the ledge of the sink, it fell in the sink, and the touchless faucet started pouring all over my phone. I didn’t know what to do! I turned it off *then turned it back on again* and the screen wasn’t working. I tried to reset it again, same result. I had to finish my night of air travel with no phone, which I don’t recommend to anyone.

When I got home 7 hours later, I put the dead BB and all its parts in a grave of uncooked rice. I set it on top of the DirecTV box and let it sit for 3 (three) days.

Last night I put it back together, and it came back to life like Jesus! Screen works, no water damage, as good as new. And this was after everyone said I short circuited it by turning it on when it was wet.

So give it a try, you just might be surprised. :)

#19173 Zak on March 3rd, 2010 at 4:23 am

I was at a festival two days ago and after sweating it up in the alexisonfire pit for an hour or so i went to these weak spray shower things they had there. Of course my phone was in my pocket. It worked for 20 mins after that then i couldnt get it back on. I tried turning it on about 5 times afterwards, getting it to work once but then it turned back off again next time i checked. i also then made the mistake of charging it over night.

Obviously i had no idea about proper wet blackberry protocol. It’s been in the rice for 36 hours or so and all i can get is the buttons to light up and a red light on top of my storm. Is there any hope for my phone?

Cooper
#19238 Cooper on March 3rd, 2010 at 9:40 am

@zac – give it a little while longer but charging it while wet most likely did some damage to the phone that may not be recoverable.

#20000 A'Laura on March 8th, 2010 at 3:01 pm

Hi, so i did not realize it but i think my phone got a little wet from a water bottle that was in my bag. I dried the phone instantly and now when i put the battery back in , it does it’s own thing. it calls random people and sends texts! i have no control over it…any advice???

Cooper
#20083 Cooper on March 9th, 2010 at 9:58 am

@A’laura pull the battery and place the parts in a bucket of rice for a couple days. That should sort out the issues.
