Using your BlackBerry as a stopwatch

Posted by Joe on December 18, 2008

I don’t know how many of you enjoy playing board games or running relay races with friends, but sometimes you just need a stopwatch. While we were in high school, we could count on someone in our group having a stopwatch on their wristwatch. Now? Not so much. They have these fancy silver analog watches, which just aren’t conducive to time-keeping. Some are like me, who refuses to wear a watch because I can just pull out my BlackBerry to tell me the time. Thankfully, it can also act as a stopwatch.

All it takes is an application. I really do wish there was some native client that could take care of it — after all, enough software comes preloaded on a BlackBerry that you assume they could add a program as simple as a stopwatch. Yet, we’re left with just third party applications.

There are a ton of them, which I don’t think makes the choice any easier. A stopwatch is a stopwatch is a stopwatch, right? So now that we’ve determined that, let’s take a look.

Over at the BBGeeks Store, you can find a few stopwatch applications. On the expensive side there’s Vorino Timer / Stopwatch, which runs $7.95. A cheaper alternative is the simple Stopwatch for BlackBerry, which checks in at a penny under three bucks.

Or, you know, you could check out a free version. As with all freeware, there are no guarantees. Worth a shot, though, in my opinion.

Chronograph is a good one for me. i was on the market for something that counts down, instead of up, like a stopwatch. Two thumbs up for me, might even warrant a post about it.

I second conedude13’s recommendation. I don’t see why anyone would pay for a timer/stopwatch when Chronograph works so well.

Of course, if you own a BB Storm, remember that you have a built-in stopwatch app, as well as a timer. Very useful stuff.
