Hi all!
even though this post is very old - i thought it would be appropriate to add these points.
1. many people here are concerned with the non-email/bbm-data consumption fees on t-mobile and various other service providers.
2. shutting off data causes emails and bbms to stop as well.
3. one person mentioned shutting down all applications (including location services). which is a very good suggestion.

this is not 100% relevant here but good related advice (in my opinion)
1. consider using UMA. Tmobile and several other service providers do offer this. when you get to hotel/office/convention overseas you connect to wireless provider via WIFI and use all network features for free (tmobile for sure for others - check your carrier).
2. someone might consider to write a script that works like a firewall that can be turned on during out-of-network travelings.
3. get a local sim card. i have picked them up all over asia and they have been reliable and cheap for making phone calls and sending sms to USA.

Guys, if you want to block internet charges on ur BB, all you need to do is go to "option"_"advanced option"_"GPS" then follow this:

GPS Data sourse: Device GPS
GPS Services: Location OFF
Location Data: Disabled
Location Aiding: Disabled

On the "browser Push" option, under "advanced option", you need to "uncheck" (Enable Push)

No worries it wont block you fron using ur BBM if your number is registered to unlimted BB apps usage. It will just block WAP charges. There will be possibilities that you will be charge for internet even if you did not use the browser of your phone. One of the reason for that is when downloading apps (BBM, FB, Twitter) it will give you an option to enable data after the download. If you will click "yes" definitely it will turn on "location aiding" on your phone which will charge you for internet service.

I ones had this problem before. I was being charge for internet even f i did not use it.

Hope this one helps....

So I am in Lebanon and I turned my MOBILE NETWORK OFF. I am connected to WIFI. My Data Services is (ON) but while roaming (off).

I am able to BBM while i am home but am i roaming? Or am i just using the WIFI to bbm. I can also go on twitter and facebook. But i am so worried that i am still roaming. What is the difference of turning your MOBILE NETWORK OFF and the DATA SERVICES OFF????

Can i use wifi if my data services is off?.. no right?

I dont know what to do.

I stopped using my carrier for my Blackberry 8900. Now I use WiFi for LogicMail, Meebo and Kik Messenger (BBM alternative). You can get these OTA (over the air through WiFi) without USB/Blackberry Apps, but you have to search for the sites online. Last Nov 2010, I think, Kik, was banned from Blackberry App World and you can only get that app if you find the OTA download. What I've done is use the same BBM numbers for my Kik, but it's unecessary.

I'm in switzerland for 4 months. I pay the $20 international blackberry roaming fee for unlimited email and would like to always use it, but I only seldomly use third party apps like FB and Twitter. When I turn off the data in the settings it shuts off the email too. Do I have to individually approve/disapprove data settings for all third party applications? Which apps are using data that I don't know about? And how do I keep my free bberry email service running fluidly all day without being unknowingly charged for extra data usage?
