Turning off data service on your BlackBerry

Posted by Joe on February 9, 2009

Can anyone think of a situation where you would need to turn off just your BlackBerry data service? All I could come up with were international travel, roaming situations, and scenarios where your data is metered and you want to conserve. I suppose you could use it to avoid emails from work, too. Thankfully, for those who need it this is a relatively easy function.

Open up to your Applications menu and scroll to Manage Connections. Underneath the check boxes you’ll see a selection which reads Mobile Network Options. Scroll down and click the trackball on it.

There you’ll be able to see available mobile networks along with a few options, including Data Services. You can turn it off, or turn it off only when roaming. That’s quite a useful feature, as it can save you when you don’t know you’re roaming.

Does anyone use this feature frequently?

It would be useful if these little tips came with “Applicable to:” categories for devices and carriers…

My Bell Mobility 8703e has a completely different menu structure and they’ve apparently disabled the “data services” option you mention.

This option would be very useful indeed when I’m travelling in the States and need phone access but don’t want to pay data roaming charges.

On the Curve 8310, it is Options -> Mobile Network. Yes, I use this when out of the country to minimize roaming fees.

I do use this quite frequently when roaming or in a place where cellular coverage is poor. It helps stop the device from wasting energy and time searching for a signal.

Imagine having a killer round going on pblay’s golf and in the middle of a swing when data begins to flow causing a temporary lag in the power meter causing an early or late swing and out of bounds. Turning off the data can keep you in bounds and give you a shot at that elusive best score!

Not that I would use my BB for trivial games…but I could imagine it happening to someone.

I use this every day to avoid receiving email updates on my BlackBerry when I’m sitting in front of my computer.

The best would be an additional option to deactivate only BBerry email service.

I use it all the time just to conserve battery.

I’ve always kept this at “off when roaming”.

For gaming, I just go into airplane mode.

Did you guys know from this same menu you can also do wings and dns hookups (at least in 4.7).

I use it all the time! I frequently speak in public and my BB radio signal always interferes with wireless microphones and/or speakers making an annoying noise.

every time I sinchronize my blackberry with my computer I receive thousands of emails confirming data transfer between my blackberry and a server. How can I stop this?

@Gustavo — Are you on a BES connection for work? This sounds like a setting on a BES server that notifies the handheld. If you are on a BES, contact your IT department and inform them of what is happening.

If not, please leave another message here and I will investigate it for you further.

If I have a limited data plan and leave data services on all the time, will i be using data even if I’m not using applications?

Tim, as long as you keep all apps closed — that is, hit Menu in them and select Close — then the only data you should be using is when you’re pushed new emails.

If I turn the data service off, will I still be able to get text messages?

Cindy, you should still get text messages, but not MMS if you turn off data.

Joe – I want to do this but I don’t think the feature is not on the 7290? I went to my bb account online and changed the “forward data to device” No more data came to my BB but the charges continued. Suggestions?
