Turning off data service on your BlackBerry

Posted by Joe on February 9, 2009 | 51 comments | Filed under : Quick Tips

Can anyone think of a situation where you would need to turn off just your BlackBerry data service? All I could come up with were international travel, roaming situations, and scenarios where your data is metered and you want to conserve. I suppose you could use it to avoid emails from work, too. Thankfully, for those who need it this is a relatively easy function.

Open up to your Applications menu and scroll to Manage Connections. Underneath the check boxes you’ll see a selection which reads Mobile Network Options. Scroll down and click the trackball on it.

There you’ll be able to see available mobile networks along with a few options, including Data Services. You can turn it off, or turn it off only when roaming. That’s quite a useful feature, as it can save you when you don’t know you’re roaming.

Does anyone use this feature frequently?

I know that if you set data to off while roaming but use WIFI you can use your BBM but does the same apply to text and emails?

Hi all!
even though this post is very old – i thought it would be appropriate to add these points.
1. many people here are concerned with the non-email/bbm-data consumption fees on t-mobile and various other service providers.
2. shutting off data causes emails and bbms to stop as well.
3. one person mentioned shutting down all applications (including location services). which is a very good suggestion.

this is not 100% relevant here but good related advice (in my opinion)
1. consider using UMA. Tmobile and several other service providers do offer this. when you get to hotel/office/convention overseas you connect to wireless provider via WIFI and use all network features for free (tmobile for sure for others – check your carrier).
2. someone might consider to write a script that works like a firewall that can be turned on during out-of-network travelings.
3. get a local sim card. i have picked them up all over asia and they have been reliable and cheap for making phone calls and sending sms to USA.

Guys, if you want to block internet charges on ur BB, all you need to do is go to “option”_”advanced option”_”GPS” then follow this:

GPS Data sourse: Device GPS
GPS Services: Location OFF
Location Data: Disabled
Location Aiding: Disabled

On the “browser Push” option, under “advanced option”, you need to “uncheck” (Enable Push)

No worries it wont block you fron using ur BBM if your number is registered to unlimted BB apps usage. It will just block WAP charges. There will be possibilities that you will be charge for internet even if you did not use the browser of your phone. One of the reason for that is when downloading apps (BBM, FB, Twitter) it will give you an option to enable data after the download. If you will click “yes” definitely it will turn on “location aiding” on your phone which will charge you for internet service.

I ones had this problem before. I was being charge for internet even f i did not use it.

Hope this one helps….

So I am in Lebanon and I turned my MOBILE NETWORK OFF. I am connected to WIFI. My Data Services is (ON) but while roaming (off).

I am able to BBM while i am home but am i roaming? Or am i just using the WIFI to bbm. I can also go on twitter and facebook. But i am so worried that i am still roaming. What is the difference of turning your MOBILE NETWORK OFF and the DATA SERVICES OFF????

Can i use wifi if my data services is off?.. no right?

I dont know what to do.

I stopped using my carrier for my Blackberry 8900. Now I use WiFi for LogicMail, Meebo and Kik Messenger (BBM alternative). You can get these OTA (over the air through WiFi) without USB/Blackberry Apps, but you have to search for the sites online. Last Nov 2010, I think, Kik, was banned from Blackberry App World and you can only get that app if you find the OTA download. What I’ve done is use the same BBM numbers for my Kik, but it’s unecessary.

Hi, I need to turn data off completely, or remove it from my phone. I have a Blackberry 8130 and it used to be on Alltel but they got bought out by Verizon. Thanks for any help!

I’m in switzerland for 4 months. I pay the $20 international blackberry roaming fee for unlimited email and would like to always use it, but I only seldomly use third party apps like FB and Twitter. When I turn off the data in the settings it shuts off the email too. Do I have to individually approve/disapprove data settings for all third party applications? Which apps are using data that I don’t know about? And how do I keep my free bberry email service running fluidly all day without being unknowingly charged for extra data usage?

What if i only want to be able to auto-receive e-mail, facebook and stuff like that when i am connected to Wi-Fi, and not when i am on a regular data connection?

Hi there guys, after multiple searches, i belive here are some peeps that would able to asisst me.

Altough everyone wants to turn of there data service, I actually would like to keep mine active when roaming (only way i can bbm), but i would like to know how i can disable incoming and out going phone calls… Is this possible

( no phone calls only data – email, bbm, etc)

Hello everyone. I have a slight problem that i hope you can help me with.

I live in Lebanon and the current solution provided by my telecom company has a limit to the internet consumption. So once i surpass this limit, i am being charged 1$ for every MB.
If i use the Wifi instead of the Edge, i will not be charged for the MBs. However if I turn my wifi on, the internet still consumes form Edge and not the actual wifi. Thus i would have to turn my line off and use the wifi alone but this means i cannot receive or make any phone calls.

so is there a way to have my BB Curve 8900 to use the wifi over the edge service? thx

Cooper 13 Cooper February 2, 2011 at 10:59 am

@Carys If you turn off data services entirely you will be disabling BBM, email, social apps etc. no matter where you are.

If you set it up to disable data while roaming it will only block those services while you are out of your home network coverage area (while roaming).

14 Carys February 2, 2011 at 6:50 am

Hi,

I am going away but can see the two options of when in the mobile network menu and data services – i can turn off data services entirely, or only while roaming. What is the difference?

Sorry I am not very good with technology!

Cooper 15 Cooper December 22, 2010 at 10:59 am

@Roger Unfortunately you can not turn off your data while roaming and still receive emails. You should look a little further into what services they claimed were used. I may be able to help you limit what is actually running to save you a few bucks.

16 Roger December 19, 2010 at 7:08 am

Hi,
I have a BB 8820 and my problems is that when I travel and I travel a lot I got a lot data usage charges knowing that I don’t use browsing rather i use my phone only for emails and my subcription is UNLIMED.
now the question is
1- any setting to use when I travel to stop being charged for data usage and still at the same time sending/receiving emails??

awaiting you feedback
Roger

Cooper 17 Cooper August 16, 2010 at 10:40 am

@Harriet Unfortunately you can not get these messages as they were never sent to the device.

18 Harriet August 15, 2010 at 5:56 am

Hi

I turned off my data services completely when I was away for a month. I have just turned it back on, but i haven’t received any bbm’s from when I was away (I know I received some). Is there any way of receiving them? Thanks

I can’t believe either how many times the same question in a slightly different way in this thread was asked, but I’m glad it was. It wasn’t until Beatrice (one of the last ones) laid out her question that I saw exactly what I was wondering. Not all of us are techno-savvy and so sometimes we need it spelled out differently for our understanding. Thanks to all of you. I leave Saturday and wanted to minimize roaming charges for my company but still be able to get emails periodically and it looks like this is the solution. I presume I can turn on data whenever I want and get emails and then turn off again. Great!

20 PJ July 28, 2010 at 3:59 pm

I can’t even beleive how many times the same question in a slightly different way in this thread

Cooper 21 Cooper June 10, 2010 at 1:02 pm

@beatrice Yes that is correct

22 beatrice June 8, 2010 at 3:52 pm

so, correct me if i’m wrong… when you go abroad with your bb and do not want to use internet or receive any emails, facebook notifications, etc. because you do not want to get charged for this, all you have to do is to switch of data services by going to the menu, then manage connections, then data services and click on ‘off when roaming’ or just ‘off’ and you will not be charged for anything? but still be able to receive plain sms… is that right?

Cooper 23 Cooper June 2, 2010 at 7:54 am

@Dave In your network connections – turn data off. Options > Mobile Network > data Services > set to off and press menu > save.

I’m out of country on vacation and don’t want to receive text messages or emails to my phone to avoid the costs. How can i do this with 9700 bold?

Cooper 25 Cooper May 31, 2010 at 9:41 am

@deedee You can ask your IT guy/girl to block delivery of your email for the duration of your vacation. If it is not against policy then it should be doable.

26 deedee May 30, 2010 at 3:49 pm

is it possible to stop emails coming to the phone but keep mms? work provide my bb so if i take it on holiday i’d need to switch off data but won’t be able to send pics home

Cooper 27 Cooper April 26, 2010 at 11:29 am

@Quasar Yes you can use the BlackBerry as a voice only device.

28 quasar58 April 23, 2010 at 1:13 pm

If I don’t subscribe to a data services plan & turn off Data Services on BB, can I still continue using voice? I would only use other apps where wi-fi is available

Cooper 29 Cooper March 15, 2010 at 9:25 am

@Mollie – If you turn off data while roaming you will not have access to your BBM unless you are hooked up on wifi.

If you use the BBM on anything but a wifi connection you will be charged fees for roaming data usage.

30 mollie March 14, 2010 at 3:46 pm

if i turn off data whilst roaming will i still be able to use bbm? and is it free!? please help

Joe 31 Joe December 28, 2009 at 7:03 pm

Jay, yes, everything will be pushed your way when you turn your data back on.

32 Jay December 28, 2009 at 6:50 am

If I turn my data off ; will I receive all my emails & mms sent to me while the data was off once I turn the data back on ?

33 Ken November 30, 2009 at 12:58 pm

My firm uses Exchange email but does not use BB Enterprise Server. I tested Network off and it worked on stopping both email and text messages. But upon re-connection, all emails (including the ones read and deleted from desktop) piled in, but not the missed text messages (I sent one during off setting to test function). Any other solution to stop there while in office, short of hooking device to desktop? Thanks.

Joe 34 Joe November 30, 2009 at 12:13 pm

steven, SMS will still work. That works on the voice switch.

35 steven November 30, 2009 at 6:15 am

If I switch off Data services while roaming, can I still use voice and SMS while roaming?

36 Peggy June 22, 2009 at 11:39 pm

Joe – I want to do this but I don’t think the feature is not on the 7290? I went to my bb account online and changed the “forward data to device” No more data came to my BB but the charges continued. Suggestions?

Joe 37 Joe May 21, 2009 at 7:20 am

Cindy, you should still get text messages, but not MMS if you turn off data.

38 Cindy May 20, 2009 at 3:32 pm

If I turn the data service off, will I still be able to get text messages?

Joe 39 Joe April 30, 2009 at 7:51 am

Tim, as long as you keep all apps closed — that is, hit Menu in them and select Close — then the only data you should be using is when you’re pushed new emails.

40 Tim April 30, 2009 at 1:28 am

If I have a limited data plan and leave data services on all the time, will i be using data even if I’m not using applications?

41 mauricio February 21, 2009 at 10:01 pm

It wiii be nice to have an application that allows to schedule email to be off on nights and weekends…

Cooper 42 Cooper February 17, 2009 at 10:04 am

@Gustavo — Are you on a BES connection for work? This sounds like a setting on a BES server that notifies the handheld. If you are on a BES, contact your IT department and inform them of what is happening.

If not, please leave another message here and I will investigate it for you further.

43 gustavo February 15, 2009 at 7:24 pm

every time I sinchronize my blackberry with my computer I receive thousands of emails confirming data transfer between my blackberry and a server. How can I stop this?
thanks

44 dtrejov February 9, 2009 at 9:59 pm

I use it all the time! I frequently speak in public and my BB radio signal always interferes with wireless microphones and/or speakers making an annoying noise.

45 DavidB February 9, 2009 at 7:32 pm

I’ve always kept this at “off when roaming”.

For gaming, I just go into airplane mode.

Did you guys know from this same menu you can also do wings and dns hookups (at least in 4.7).

46 ddub February 9, 2009 at 12:37 pm

I use it all the time just to conserve battery.

47 Big February 9, 2009 at 12:14 pm

I use this every day to avoid receiving email updates on my BlackBerry when I’m sitting in front of my computer.

The best would be an additional option to deactivate only BBerry email service.

Imagine having a killer round going on pblay’s golf and in the middle of a swing when data begins to flow causing a temporary lag in the power meter causing an early or late swing and out of bounds. Turning off the data can keep you in bounds and give you a shot at that elusive best score!

Not that I would use my BB for trivial games…but I could imagine it happening to someone.

49 Dave February 9, 2009 at 10:28 am

I do use this quite frequently when roaming or in a place where cellular coverage is poor. It helps stop the device from wasting energy and time searching for a signal.

50 Mike Crandall February 9, 2009 at 10:02 am

On the Curve 8310, it is Options -> Mobile Network. Yes, I use this when out of the country to minimize roaming fees.

51 Colin Carmichael February 9, 2009 at 9:46 am

It would be useful if these little tips came with “Applicable to:” categories for devices and carriers…

My Bell Mobility 8703e has a completely different menu structure and they’ve apparently disabled the “data services” option you mention.

This option would be very useful indeed when I’m travelling in the States and need phone access but don’t want to pay data roaming charges.
