This might have worked better yesterday morning, before we discussed a Bluetooth file transfer for BlackBerry. Still, it’s always good to be more familiar with your menu settings. In this quick tip, we’ll go over some of the items in your Bluetooth options menu. So click Options, and then Bluetooth.

First up is the Device Name. This is what’s displayed when you’re making a connection to a computer. The default is the name of your BlackBerry model, and it seems there’s little reason to change it (unless you have two, say, 8330 devices). Next is Discoverable, which signals whether your device is available to be paired with another Bluetooth device. It might seem convenient to keep this at Yes, but for security purposes its probably better to leave it on No until you want to pair.

Then there are options for Outgoing Calls and Address Book transfer. Unless you have something specific to accomplish, it’s probably best to leave these at their default values of Always and All Entries, respectively. You have the option to kill the blue LED indicator if you’d like. Security level should probably remain at High unless you know what you’re doing with High+Encryption.

Next is Connect On Power Up. This is easy enough a setting. I keep mine at No, just so my Bluetooth doesn’t send out any kind of signal when it boots up and doesn’t “fail to connect” to another device. This is going to depend a lot on how often you use a Bluetooth peripheral. Finally, there’s a check list of services compatible with your device. You can leave them all checked, or check only the Bluetooth devices you use.
