Replacing your BlackBerry faceplate and LCD screen

Posted by Joe on July 31, 2009

One question I’ve gotten a few times via email lately asks what you can do if you scratch the screen on your BlackBerry. This can be a tough issue which requires a little know-how. Thankfully, there are plenty of people around the Internet who have just that kind of knowledge. So we turn to them to answer the question. Hopefully they can lend a hand if you’re in this situation. But before we even start the linking, please, please, please: if you don’t know what you’re doing, don’t do it. You’ll have to take apart your BlackBerry, which can not only void the warranty, but can render it useless if you do something wrong. Just a warning.

Replacing the faceplate

If you just need a new faceplate — because it’s all scratched up or you have some minor nicks and dents — the process is relatively simple. There is an excellent and comprehensive how-to guide at Cell Phone Forums. If still-photo and text walk-throughs aren’t your bag, you can check out the video below. Just stop after you remove the faceplate and reassemble from there.

Replacing the LCD screen and/or bezel

This process is a bit more complex, and again it’s not recommended for those who don’t have a good idea of what they’re doing. Sometimes it’s just the plastic screen cover which is cracked. A faceplate replacement can take care of that. Sometimes it’s deeper, though. If your LCD screen or bezel is cracked, you’re going to need to dig a bit deeper. The following video will walk you through the process.

That should walk you through both processes, the faceplate and the LCD screen/bezel.

Where to find

Of course, if you want to replace your faceplate or LCD screen, you’ll need the actual part. You can always do a Google product search for BlackBerry LCD screen or BlackBerry faceplate, but those results can get jumbled. Most people I talk to recommend Horizon Wireless.

Of course, if you have a favorite little place, feel free to leave it in the comments.
