Quick Tip Roundup: Changing the looks of your BlackBerry

Posted by Joe on September 8, 2010 | 2 comments | Filed under : Quick Tips

In our three-plus years serving the BlackBerry community we’ve written more than 100 BlackBerry quick tips. They’re really what we built the site around: helping users get the most out of their devices. Many of these tips are fairly basic, but they can be invaluable to new users. The problem, of course, is that they’re buried in the archives, so it might be difficult to find them. This leads us to Quick Tip Roundup. We’ll dig through our archives and revisit several useful tips, all revolving around a single theme. What better place to start than your BlackBerry’s display?

When you first boot up your BlackBerry it might look pretty boring. It has a basic theme, usually one from your carrier. As you can see from the above themes, you can do better. You can accomplish this in two ways.

Change your BlackBerry wallpaper

Back when we were just a fledgling site, Rae explained one of the BlackBerry basics. Changing your wallpaper is simple, but there are still plenty of users who don’t know how to do it without changing the theme altogether. This is something that hasn’t changed from OS to OS; it’s still the same as she describes from the 8800 series.

To change your wallpaper go into your media app or folder and choose pictures. Navigate to the image you wish to set as the background and then, either when you’ve scrolled over the thumbnail or when you’ve opened the picture, press the menu button and select Set as Wallpaper. That’s it. You’ll retain the theme’s feel and functionality, but will have a new background.

Change your BlackBerry theme

Sometimes changing just your wallpaper isn’t enough. Maybe you don’t like the current icon set, or you want to view your messages and calendar appointments right on your home screen. Themes are getting more and more intricate, so chances are you’ll want to change from the default theme pretty quickly. Not only that, but you might also want to change your theme frequently. We’ve reviewed hundreds of premium BlackBerry themes, and it really is difficult to choose just one.

Changing your theme is another process that hasn’t changed much as the BlackBery OS has progressed through the 4s and into 5. Just go to Options and then Theme. There you’ll see a list of themes you’ve downloaded. Scroll over the appropriate one and click. Now you have a new theme set.

Change the font on your BlackBerry

OK. You have a brand new theme sparkling on your BlackBerry display. Maybe you’ve even changed the wallpaper on that theme to an image you really dig. All set? For the most part yeah, your display is ready to go and you can concentrate on the messages and calendar and all those things that the BlackBerry does. But there is just one more display aspect you might want to change.

Fonts are a personal thing. Some people like crazy, weird fonts. Some people like fonts they can read. And yet other people like comic sans. If you happen to not like the default font of your current theme you can change it with ease. Just go to Options and then Screen/Keyboard. The top option will be Font Family. You can change the font’s appearance here. Then you can change the size to best suit your eyes. And then, finally, you can edit the font’s style. It’s pretty simple, but it will allow you to better read your BlackBerry.

NOTE: You can find all of these options under the Display menu in OS 6.
