I never quite understood the purpose of standby mode. I did use the function regularly, though not intentionally. This actually happens a lot with my Tour, since it’s easy to press the mute button while shoving the device into my pocket. I suppose it saves battery, and it’s not really that big a pain if I do accidentally hit it. I’m sure many of you use the function — or used it, depending on your OS version. As Bla1ze reports, RIM has disabled standby mode in recent OS builds, starting with version 5.0. It appears that this isn’t just the mute key that’s changed, but rather the entire feature being disabled. If anyone has a workaround, leave it in the comments.

hi! i have a new blackberry tour, but when i’m typping, suddely it goes to the standby mode. Today it became crazy and started going on and off the satnby mode by itself. I wonder if it is a way to completly disable this mode. Its driving me crazy …

@Batman Holding the Mute key down locks and unlocks the device – what makes you think it is affecting the sd card?

I just got my 9700, and I thought at first it was busted! but after nearly two days of searching the web for fixes, changing to various os’s including a calfix, I stumbled on the mute key actually toggles the SD card on or off, does anyone know how to reassign the key to something usefull? any help would be gratefully recieved.

Well, I’m running the newest 5.0.0.545 on my 9700 and the mute button does nothing other than mute, no standby at all. My lock key just has a message saying the keyboard is locked and to hit it again. I have no lock icon on any of my menus or in my apps, no more lock screen with owner info and the lock picture :o(

On my Tour running 5.0.0.484 holding down the mute button does nothing.
Hitting the lock button on the upper left now locks the screen and keyboard, and hitting it again unlocks it.
If you want the full lock with password, that’s been moved to the icon on the home screen.

My BlackBerry Bold 9000 running BlackBerry OS 5.0.0.509 (official Telstra Australia upgrade) still has standby… Sort of.
If I hold the mute key down, I don’t get the “entering standby mode, press any key to cancel message” that I used to see, but the screen still turns off!

Standby mode works fine on my Bold 9700 running 5.0.0.405. I use it constantly since I carry my phone in my pocket and I don’t want to have to unlock it all the time.

I am using os 5.0.0.411 and the mute key still puts the phone into standby. Its one of the reasons I don’t like to go any higher until they include it again.
