One tip that executives hand down time and again is to proofread emails before sending. From what I’ve observed, this isn’t practiced very often. I always get emails with typos — though I send my fair share of typo-laden emails so it’s tough to complain. In a more formal setting, though, it would do well to look your best. Your BlackBerry offers the option to automatically spell check emails before sending. Many forego this because they don’t have the time and/or patience. So many common words get caught by spell check. You can add those entries to your dictionary, though, and have a smooth spell check process which only catches true errors.
To get to your custom dictionary, go to Messages and click the Menu button. Click Options, and then Spell Check. Here’s where you check the option to spell check before sending an email. Below that option is a button for Custom Dictionary. Click it.
Click in the trackball and you’ll be prompted for a new entry. Just enter the new word and you’re set. Seriously. Add all the common words which get caught in spell check so that they sail through the next time. For example, whenever I mention the name “Rodriguez” in an email, it gets flagged. I have no idea why — it’s common enough a name in America, right? But now that I’ve entered it, it doesn’t catch it in an auto-spell check.
