How to separate your email from SMS

Posted by Joe on October 6, 2008 | 6 comments | Filed under : Quick Tips

Most everyone I know uses the consolidated message application to deal with their emails and SMS. While each email address comes with its own icon, it seems more expedient to hide those icons and just use the consolidated version. However, what if you want to keep email and SMS separate? I’ve seen this question posed quite a few times, so I thought I’d give it a whirl here. We’ll get to business after the jump.

First you’ll go to your messages application, and hit the Menu button. Select Options, then select General Options. Scroll down to the bottom of the first page, and you’ll see an option named SMS and Email Inboxes. It should be set to Theme Controlled by default. Click on it, and switch it to Separate. After you back out, you’ll notice a new icon on your desktop called SMS.

If you want to recombine them, just repeat the process and change it back to either Combined or Theme Controlled. Simple as that, baby.

Has anyone tried this with the new BB Curve 8900? After selecting the Separate option, I I am no longer seeing my SMS messages. The Messages application then only contains email messages, and there is no SMS application.

[...] Separating SMS from email in your messages folder. People have already found this helpful. Before I found out how to do this, I did wonder if it could be done. It’s nice to have the phone separate from the data. [...]

How cool! Perfect for me – I’m always missing my sister’s SMS messages because they get mixed up with all the email – get.

Thank you!

I prefer to use the good old Messages rather than the individual email account icon. After all, who wants to have to hunt around for the icon when just tapping M will get me right there? (See http://blackberryforums.pinstack.com/blog.php?b=680)

That said, there are times when I want to see only the emails from one account. For that, I have Saved Searches for each email account, as well as the ones typically built in (like [Alt] T for senT messages). Here’s how to do it:
