How to re-install BlackBerry Messenger

Posted by Joe on January 7, 2009

One of the joys of BlackBerry ownership is the BlackBerry Messenger application. It’s a neat little program which is frequently used by BB addicts to communicate with one another. It’s quick, easy, and comes pre-loaded on all new BlackBerry models. What if you don’t have it, though? You might have deleted it to clear some memory; you might have thought it unnecessary at first; or you just might have screwed up at some point. In any case, it’s not difficult to recover.

The easiest way is to use BlackBerry Desktop Software. After connecting your Berry, select Apploader, then Add-Remove. Check BlackBerry Messenger, or make sure it’s checked. Select finish. As with all Desktop Manager transactions, make sure you back up your device before executing. You never know what can go wrong during the installation process (like tripping over the USB cord when running out to answer the phone…grumble grumble grumble).

If that’s not doing it for you, or if you don’t have Desktop Software, don’t fret. There’s still another way. You can go to this site, which will allow you to download Messenger. You need Internet Explorer (seriously?) with Active X. If you’ve got that, you can get Messenger.

So, if you’ve made the mistake of deleting BlackBerry Messenger and want it back, you can reverse course with either of these methods. As a final note, you can also use the Desktop Manager solution to reinstall BlackBerry Maps.

I deleted bb messenger from my storm thinking I wasn’t going to need it.. to free up some space… now I’d like it back. The problem: #1 I have a Mac #2 the OTA is only for versions 4.0 and 4.1. What should I do? If I were to go to Verizon, would they be able to reinstall for me? Or is there anouther wat around it so I could do it myself? Thanks in advance for your insight!

cjones, I’d suggest trying to find a friend with a PC. Other than that, you can try Verizon. Not sure they’ll help, but worth a shot.

@LUIS You can try this link instead to download BBM via USB:

That link also doesn’t work. It seems BB have removed the ability to download it directly from them. My messenger disappeared after an OS upgrade.

I got the same problem!
Please Help!

It looks like the way to do this is to use Application Loader in Desktop Manager. So annoying that they took down that link.

Helpppppp!! My BBM just disappeared, nowhere to be seen except in the advanced options menu, which i deleted it from thinking I could re-install. Have downloaded BB desktop manager and when I click the application loader, all it shows is Facebook & MSN Messenger. BBM is nowhere to be seen!! When I click ‘browse’ it just enables me to search my computer, is there anywhere I can D/L bbm for my pc?? none of the links work :(

Please someone find a backdoor to this, I do not want to reinstall the entire OS again and loose everything. I have an 8330, wish it was a Storm.

just in case your BB messenger crash like mine did (and for some reason, like me, you haven’t backed up your data yet and you couldn’t find blackberry messenger in the application list on your desktop manager), here’s what to do

go to this link from your desktop: http://na.blackberry.com/eng/support/downloads/download_sites.jsp

click on your service provider – select your handheld type (from the pull-down menu) – click next

select one of the software to download (based on the current version & platform running in yr handheld at the moment – the software platform and applications version numbers can be found under Options – About screen on the handheld) – click download

fill-in all the required information – proceed w/ download

once download is completed, run/install the program on your desktop

once installed, open your blackberry desktop manager and connect your handheld to your desktop

click on application loader and click add / remove application

make sure to check the box for blackberry messenger and all the boxes for other applications (except for some of the language options that you find unnecessary to have in your BB)

click next (bottom right) – wait til the list of applications to be updated/added/removed appear

click finish (bottom right)

unfortunately, if you haven’t backed up your data yet, your BBM contacts will be lost and you have to add everyone’s PIN again

Do You Need Internet For Blackberry Messenger ?

Cooper
#13980 Cooper on September 14th, 2009 at 1:10 pm

Yes you will need to sign up for a BlackBerry data plan with your provider in order to use BBM

#14057 Johnny on September 16th, 2009 at 2:46 pm

When I try downloading via the site, this appears; No USB Driver Installed

The BlackBerry USB Driver is not installed. Please install the correct USB driver to download the application.

What should I do ?
Thanks
