I’m not sure how many people this affects — after going through two of the solutions, it appears it’s easy enough to remove. The issue was with my Gmail account through BIS. Every time I’d send an email to another Gmail user who had a BlackBerry using BIS, I’d come home to see a delivery confirmation in my inbox. These do not show up on my BlackBerry, but only on my Gmail web inbox. It’s not a huge deal, just mildly annoying. If this is bothering you as well, read on to get a couple of fixes.
Make sure Delivery Confirmation is set to No
Just to make sure this isn’t a simple fix, go into your Messages application, click Menu, and select options. Then select Email Settings. There you should see a number of options pertaining to confirmation emails. Set them all to No. You’d think this would work, but I had them all set to No and was still receiving delivery confirmations. So it’s onto other solutions.
Set up a Gmail filter
One of my colleagues is a Gmail BlackBerry user, and we exchange emails often. He’s actually the main reason I’m writing this. If we exchange eight or nine emails while I’m out, I can get up to that many new confirmations when I get home (though Gmail sometimes consolidates them into one thread, but not all the time). I asked him if he had the same problem. “No,” he said. “But that’s because I’ve set up a Gmail filter to send those to the trash.” Brilliant.
In your Gmail web inbox, click “Create a filter,” which is next to the search box. In the field “Has the words:” you should enter “Your message was delivered to the recipient.” Keep the quotes on there if you’d like. Then click Next Step. You’ll want to skip the inbox and mark it as read. Then you’ll never have to see one of those delivery confirmations again.
Set up Gmail via POP
When we first discussed Gmail and BlackBerry, setting up your Gmail through POP was a pain. You then had to set up a filter to delete sent mails, because they would show up on your BlackBerry. That was because Gmail didn’t differentiate sent mail and received mail — their conversations were a different way of structuring email. It just didn’t translate well to BlackBerry.
Now, though, setting up through POP doesn’t cause that issue. Hoping that it wold resolve my delivery confirmation issue without using yet another Gmail filter, I deleted the Gmail account through my BIS dashboard, and then re-added it by clicking the button to add a new email, and then entering in my username and password. Voila. Gmail is now set up via POP.
And guess what? No more delivery confirmations. That’s a bit misleading, though. After performing a search, I found that yes, I’m still getting delivery confirmations. It appears, though, that Gmail is automatically performing the filter I described above: marking the email as read and skipping the inbox. Still, out of sight out of mind.
Does anyone else have this problem? Has anyone else come up with another way to fix it? If so, please share.

Why is it better to use gmail via BIS? I downloaded the gmail app for the BB and that works best for me. I don’t like how BIS puts everything in my corporate e-mail inbox and I don’t have to fool around with reconciliation issues. In addition, my personal address box, which is in gmail, is available to me in the gmail application. Using BIS for gmail is not worth the effort.
its easier to just use the Gmail app. I use my @live.com email for BIS
It isn’t just Gmail. Any email BIS processes that has Delivery Confirmation set WILL be confirmed by BIS and you can’t do anything about it. RIM doesn’t seem to care that this confirms email addresses to spammers.
You can write to bbsuggestions at rim dot com and ask that they change this behavior of BIS but I’ve been complaining ti them for close to 3 years and they seem not to care or see the wide implications this has.
David, when you say “Any email BIS processes that has Delivery Confirmation set WILL be confirmed by BIS and you can’t do anything about it,” do you mean it will always confirm when delivering to another BIS account? This only happened to me when I sent an email from my BlackBerry to another BIS user.
Joe, this idea worked like a charm! I actually thought about this a few weeks ago but then it kept slipping my mind to go forth and try it. What I actually did was set my bb filter to filter out subject containing “Delivered:” and that did the trick, finally!!!
