Many times when we offer up tips here at BBGeeks, they’re based on BlackBerry Internet Service. That’s because it’s what we use. Yes, I could run a Google search and find information for BES users, but that can backfire. After all, I can’t test it, so how can I be sure it’s correct information. So when I do tips like this, if BES users want to chime in and give us the BES method in the comments, that would be great. Today we’re going to go over email filters for your BIS.
First you’re going to have to login to your BIS account. You can find a list of BIS logins here. Unfortunately, it doesn’t appear you can do this through the Email settings quicklaunch icon on your Berry. I booted it up and clicked through a few links, but wasn’t able to find a place to set up filters.
Once you’re in your BIS account you’ll see your email addresses listed. To the right of them will be three icons: Edit, Filters, and Delete. Obviously we’re looking for Filters here, so click it for the appropriate email address. The next screen will either list your filters, or if you have none will be blank and contain the link for Add a Filter. Click it.
Name your filter, then set when to apply it. You can filter high-priority emails, or you can filter it by something contained in the From, Subject, To, or CC fields. Unfortunately, after that your options are limited. You can either forward messages to the device as Header only, or as Level 1 notification. Or, if you so choose, you can have these messages not forwarded to your device at all, which seems the most useful function of this limited filtering ability.
This is one thing I hope RIM enhances in a future BIS build. We want comprehensive filters!
(Also, I ran across this, which suggested going into you Messages app, going to Options, and going to a field called Email Filters. I don’t see this on my BIS BlackBerry. Is it a BES thing?)

GMail & IMAP FTW! With that combo you really don’t even need filters with BIS…
I am currently thinking of migrating my IMAP mails to gmail and I am using the filters you describe.
I have one question: Does anybody use gmail with BIS? My problem is that I want to define filters in gmail to move mails to a specific folder and I do not want to get them on my blackberry (newsletters, …) – but even if I define the filter with “skip Inbox” in gmail it is still sent to my BB.
My suggestion is to use the Gmail BB App. I use it and avoid the built in email support like the plague.
Yes, as you figured, you can define e-mail filters directly on the BlackBerry if it’s been activated on a BES. Like BIS, you can filter on the From:, To: and Subject: fields. However, you can also filter on the message body or whether your e-mail address appears in the CC:, BCC: or To: fields.
