Downloading a BlackBerry theme via BlackBerry Desktop Manager

Posted by Rae on January 30, 2008 | 16 comments | Filed under : Quick Tips

We talked about the easy route of changing your BlackBerry theme last week but thought it was important to note that you can also upload themes to your BlackBerry from your computer if you don’t have the ability/desire to get online via the BlackBerry to do the download for whatever reason.

First you’ll need to download the theme file to your computer. The file will usually be in the rar format which will need to be decompressed using winrar or UnRarX if you’re on a Mac. Then just install it using your BlackBerry Desktop Manager.

    - Connect the BlackBerry to your computer
    - Open the Desktop Manager
    - Choose Application Loader > Add
    - Find your theme file (“yourthemefilenamehere.alx”) and hit ok
    - Find the file called “Plazmic_Theme_reader.alx” and hit ok

*Note: You only need to install the “Plazmic_Theme_reader.alx” file if this file is in your theme folder that you downloaded – many, but not all, BB themes are built on this platform and thus require this file to work… if the file isn’t in the theme folder, it probably isn’t required. Please note, once you install the “Plazmic_Theme_reader.alx” file once, you won’t need to do it again for future themes.

After the installation finishes, you can now change your BlackBerry theme exactly as we previously instructed.

I’ll try Cooper’s suggestion.

These instructions lead to all the device software being installed! How can I do it so only the theme is installed?

@sam put the .cod file on your memory card then browse to the location and click on the file and it should install.

i downloaded themes before and it always came with a .alx file. this time i dont have one, only .cod. how do i install it?

Cooper 5 Cooper June 30, 2010 at 8:17 am

@Marc You will need a .jad or .jar file to go along with that cod file. They are basically instruction files to tell the BlackBerry how to unpack the .cod file.

my plazmic file has .cod at the end not .alx is that ok?

@meemoo You would need to use the side loading method – drop those files on your memory card – the use media > navigate to the location and click on the .jad file – it will prompt you to download / install the theme.

what if all the themes that i am downloading do not contain an .alx file … only .jad file and .cod file ??? what do i do then ?!?! …

Cooper 9 Cooper June 23, 2010 at 12:11 pm

@pink The reference to theme folder means the file you downloaded that contains the theme. Some themes will unzip into a folder that contains both an alx file and the plazmic file. For these themes you will need to install both items onto your BlackBerry for the theme to work.

For all other themes you should only need to upload the standard .alx file.

Make sense?

If you don’t have the alx file in the folder, then what do you do?
