Customize your Zen and TodayPlus BlackBerry themes

Posted by Joe on June 10, 2009

While browsing through BlackBerry themes, you might notice a peculiar line in the descriptions of some, talking about customizable icons. Does this mean you can choose different images for different applications? No. It’s actually a lot simpler than that — though it certainly would be cool if you could just swap icons on some of these themes. What “customizable icons” means is that you can rearrange your icons so that certain ones will appear on the Home Screen.

What you’ll essentially be doing here is moving icons around. Depending on your theme, the top row or top two rows of icons will appear on the Home Screen of a Zen or TodayPlus theme. Here’s a quick tutorial on how to move icons on your BlackBerry, and here’s a guide to different BlackBerry theme types.

Set the applications you use the most to the top row. For me this is the Alarm Clock, Messages, Address Book, Calendar, Browser, and Pandora. My theme has two rows on the Home Screen, so I also have things like BB Messenger, Profiles, and Options on my Home Screen.

Once you move the icons into their proper rows, you should see those in the top row or top two rows showing up on the Home Screen. It seems simple, right? It is. So when you see something about customizable icons when you’re browsing themes, this is what they mean. Just to clear up any confusion.

how do you change the order of icons on the Today screen? On my Today screen, four icons appear in the order from top to bottom – Call Log, Messages, Calendar, Applications. What I would like to do is change the order of my Today screen, by positions Messages and Calendar in positions 1 and 2 respectively. Is this possible?

@Paul Camacho In the default RIM themes you can not adjust these icons. I suggest finding a custom Today theme made by a third party developer that allows for repositioning of thee items.
