This past week on the BBGeekcast, I talked about my streaming audio experience with MLB Gameday Audio. While Pandora streams just fine, Gameday Audio is choppy even with a strong signal. This means that I need every little bit of signal I can get. It doesn’t help when other applications are taking that bandwidth.
Some of the time — perhaps most of the time — this won’t be the panacea which will cause your streams to come through beautifully. All it did for me was lessen the choppiness. The voices still came in and out, but to a far, far lesser degree than with other applications open taking up memory.
There are two really quick ways to close out applications which might be taking up memory and bandwidth. First is to just click on the application, then once in it hit the Menu button and close. I’ve been trying to make a habit of closing out unused applications, so hopefully this isn’t as big a problem in the future. The other is to hit Menu in the Applications Menu, and select Switch Application. That should give you a list of running applications. Close out as many as you possibly can.
Of course, if you don’t have any signal-gathering applications open, you might be stuck with a choppy stream. But if you have them open and aren’t getting optimal streaming strength, close out all those other applications and see if it helps.

“Switch Application” is a menu item from most BB applications (but not all). EG: It’s not in iSkoot (Skype) or SocialScope (Twitter and Facebook)
Be nice if RIM enforced this in the API… or, better yet, allowed JVM to use additional RAM added to the device so that IM and social apps that users want to run don’t have to be closed when “real” apps need to be run.
