T-Mobile UK BlackBerry Service

Editorial Rating

Overview:

T-Mobile UK is a subsidiary of T-Mobile International, which is a major branch of Deutsche Telekom AG. The company operates in USA, Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, Czech Republic, Poland and Russia. They are one of the top mobile companies in the world.

Pros:
T-Mobile’s Web n’Walk plans are relatively inexpensive and allow you, in their words, unlimited web surfing and emails for a cost. They also give you a certain number of minutes a month so that you can pay for as much voice and data as you want. T-Mobile offers push email with BlackBerry Internet Service for £5 to £10 on top of your plan. You get 50 MB of data and unlimited Web n’Walk browsing with the plan.

Cons: You do need to have a plan with T-Mobile in order to access BlackBerry service. Although T-Mobile tells you that you have unlimited data use, there is a fair use policy of 1, 3 or 10 GB in place. If you exceed this cap, you may be charged.

Detailed Provider Information:

Voice Plan Options: There are several plans in two categories: the Flext category has plans on an 18-month contract or a 12-month contract, and the U-Fix has plans. The Web n’Walk plus plans range from 300 minutes to 1950 minutes, and you get unlimited web-surfing and emails. The allowance price ranges from £30 to £390. Depending on your plan, you may be able to get your handset for free or for a cheaper price. Your monthly price ranges from £22.50 to £77.50, depending on your plan. Plans include free customer service calls.

Data Options: You get 50 MB of BlackBerry email for each plan, whether it’s the £5 addition or the £10 addition. All Web n’ Walk plans include unlimited data.

Messaging Options: You can use voice messaging, text messaging, voicemail and picture messaging on all plans. However, the cost of these is not included in your talk allowance – you’ll have to pay extra for each message.

Customer Service: T-Mobile has an online account management tool here: http://www.t-mobile.co.uk/service/your-account/help/  You can also choose to call or email them. Customer service calls are free on your phone if you need help.

Contract: There are two contract options, 12 and 18 months. With Web n’Walk, you must have one of these contracts to even access the BlackBerry Internet Service addition.

Messaging: Voice calls are 20p per minute; text messaging is 10p per minute. If you have voicemail, each minute is 12p, and picture messaging is 20p per minute.

International Calling and Messaging: T-Mobile, like all other mobile phone providers, has a page dedicated to listing calling costs by country. You can find it here.  They don’t charge you for peak-time calling, and you can choose one of their international plan options to save while you’re overseas. The costs range from £10 to £20.

Roaming Charges: The costs vary by country – T-Mobile has a large coverage area, so you likely won’t experience roaming charges within the UK. However, if you’re going abroad, check the site for costs by country.

Activation Fee:  T-Mobile will perform a credit check before giving you a phone; they may also ask for a deposit.

Additional Features: T-Mobile has a large variety of services and applications you can download for your phone. You can choose from messaging, video calling and TV services. You can also choose to download ringtones, games and wallpapers from T-Mobile.

Insurance: T-Mobile has a comprehensive lost and stolen policy – they will replace your SIM card for £10 and blacklist your number so that no one can use it. You may even be able to get your phone replaced.

Phones: T-Mobile offers the BlackBerry Bold 9000. While the American version of the company has a lot of models, the UK company limits itself to just two - but they are the most popular ones on the market.
