Telus Mobility BlackBerry Service
Editorial Rating
Overview:One of the newer wireless providers in Canada, Telus Mobility offers wireless voice, data and Internet services to businesses and consumers. They are based in Scarborough, Ontario.Pros: Depending on what you want from your BlackBerry plans, Telus offers different features per differently-priced plan. Telus has several deals on until November 2007 for their data plans, including unlimited data and local calling for up to three months. Calling features like call waiting and conference calling are also included. Cons: The plans are quite similar to Bell Canada’s plans, right down to the activation fee of $35 and the monthly system access fee. However, Telus’s system access fee is almost $2 cheaper, which is a plus, and consumers do get more voice minutes. Like Bell, there are quite exorbitant charges for extra data – Telus charges up to $12 for each additional MB. As well, each additional minute costs $0.35. You are also charged for roaming. Detailed Provider Information:Voice Plan Options: Telus offers two voice plans for BlackBerry. The first plan, the Talk and Email 45, costs $45 a month and gives users 100 voice minutes and unlimited local incoming minutes and local nights and weekends. The second plan, the Talk and Email 60, costs $60 a month and gives users up to 350 minutes and unlimited local and nights and weekends minutes. You also get unlimited local calling on your birthday and included call waiting and conference calling.Data Options: Telus has data plans that range from 4 MB per month to 1024 MB a month. The prices for these plans are indicated in the plan’s name – for example, Email and Web 100 for BlackBerry will cost $100 a month. The plans are Email and Web 25, 40, 60, and 100. You can choose to have these plans stand alone or you can add them to a talk plan. If you go over your data usage for the month, you will pay per MB charges between $1 and $12, depending on your data plan. For both voice and data plans, you can choose PCS or Mike networks. Messaging Options: Telus offers text and picture messaging as an extra to any plan. Email is included in data plans. Customer Service: You can contact Telus by phone or by email. They also offer a self service function on their website so that you can access FAQs and information about your account and services. They also offer a knowledgebase and search function so that you can find what you need. Contract: Most of the phones you can get with Telus are offered at a certain price, provided you have a contract with them. For the BlackBerries, you must have at least a 3-year contract to get a good price on the phones. If you want to get out of your contract, you must pay all charges owed and a termination fee. Messaging: Text messaging is an add-on. You can choose between picture messaging and text messaging, and the number of messages you want a month. It costs $0.15 per message. International Calling and Messaging: Charges to the U.S. are $0.50 a minute and international calling to Argentina, Brazil, Mexico and Peru is $0.99 a minute for calls within the country. Roaming Charges: Roaming charges apply outside of your calling area and overseas. Activation Fee: You will have to pay an activation fee of $35 and a monthly system access fee of $6.95. Additional Features: Telus puts its services together by offering different add-ons for each plan. Some include texting, SPARK (different features packaged together), autotel and satellite, and more. Insurance: See Terms and Conditions. There is a repair tab on the website which explains the warranty and the conditions for each situation. For the most part, warranties cover your phone up to 30 days after activation. Phones: Telus offers the BlackBerry Tour 9630. The Tour has many great features that allow Telus customers access to more than just email. This information is a little out of date, but Telus now provides the best data options for consumers in the Canadian marketplace. Between November 2007 and February 2008, a BIS user could get unlimited on-device data (no tethering) for $15/month. The new plan has been raised to $30/month, but this is still far better than all of the competition, and even rivals US carriers.
Patrick is right about Telus
At current price plan, theres nothing that can compare to Telus's data offering on its BB and other PDA phones
On top of that, its voice plan are one of those that leads the market in Canada as we speaks... Canadian been long waiting for affordable or even cheap data service with little to no string attach
Now it is the time, at Telus
AS OF JUN 2008 TELUS WAS THE INLY PROVIDER OF UNLIMITED DATA FOR 30 A MONTH (I GOT DEAL FOR 15/MONTH DURING XMAS) BUT BELL HAS SAME FEATURE NOW 30 A MONTH WHICH IS THE BEST IVE SEEN GOOD FOR TELUS FOR SETTING THE BENCHMARK
If you still want to get the unlimited email/web browsing/IM (including msn messnger and yahoo messenger) for $15 dollars a month, just call up their loyalty and retention service and try to negotiate with them. They usually are able to give you expired promotions if u give them a good enough reason. (ex, switching to someone else)
So far great service. My only hick with telus is the high ECF. Aside from that, they are reliable, customer service is great, and yes... they do have the best data plans and voice plans. I even got the 45$ plan for 30$ under my employee plan. This kind of thing you should all have access to.
I switched from Rogers because all they had to offer me was that they are the only GSM provider in Canada. Who cares, especially when they charge 5$/ minute on average to use my phone overseas. Plus now telus has a world phone as well.
That aside I chose Telus cause I hat Bell's monopoly over local tel service and DSL Quebec and their throttling of your line. To end This, If you have Bell DSL, give Teksavvy a try: www.teksavvy.com . 30$ 200gb/month and 40$ unlimited with no contracts. Greates deal available today and best customer service!
as a clarification, I dislike that the telus ecf is high but i don't plan on canceling, they are great.
What are the roaming charges for a pda, with telus, if you live in Canada but go to the U.S, Washington. For when you don't use it but leave it switched on?; and for if you send 2 text messages?
I have Telus and my data plan is $45/mth which provides unlimited text, IM, email & web browsing. Overall I like them :)
I renewed my contract with Telus (3 yrs)with a Blackberry Curve, to make me stay with them they gave me all my bundles Approx $40 a month for free
Recently, while shopping for a new international (world) phone, I was comparing Rogers & Telus. NOBODY at Telus is in the know. The right hand doesn't know what the left is doing. Apparently, I qualify for a free phone, but nobody told me that. Instead, I was going to pay the $700 cad. for a new Blakberry Storm. As well, Telus keeps all the features on thier phones locked, but for the low price of $40/mo. I could unlock the "wifi" but when I travel (every second month) it would be turned off, unless I use and occur Telus "roaming charges" I was not impressed. I've been a loyal Telus mob. subscriber for over a dozen years, my wife and kids have Telus phones, for god sakes. It made me realize that I can get a better priced phone that is FULLY unlocked overseas. sorry Telus, you snooze, you loose. just a money grab, sooner or later they will get their eyes opened, maybe it will take someone to do it for them.
Not sure what Mad Jack is talking about, first of all, Telus doesn't offer a Storm for free, to anyone. Second of all, what features are locked, and since when is wifi a feature that carriers can choose to lock and unlock, or for that matter, charge roaming for? If you want to get the far inferior 9500 from Vodaphone, feel free, but as far as Canadian carriers go, Telus is no. 1 (according to subscriber base, churn rate, and overall revenue and ARPU as well as customer satisfaction.
what is the lowest rate plan I can pay for a smart phone? eg HTC Diamond
@Fredville - if you are in Manitoba (not likely), you can get Supertalk 10 plan - $10 for 200 (I believe) daytime minutes, UNL Evenings and Weekends from 6pm. With SAF and taxes you're looking at about $20/month. In Ontario, its pretty much the Sweet Deal 25 plan. Same deal, only its $17.50/month. As for data, I've managed to get the Unlimited Email, IM, and Web 25 plan (which is not advertised), but otherwise you're looking at $35 for 500mb of data (not a good deal). Good luck!
First off all i got a storm for free, it took me 20 minutes to talk to the customer care! and i pay 52,70$ plus tx a month including network fees! i get 500 megs internet, unlimited txt and 250 daytime minutes, and unlimited conversation with 5 numbers nationwide, and i get free call id and voice mail! i went to this store in magog and the salesman gave me a hell of a good deal!
i forgot to say htc sucks windows always have problems!!
Got the Telus Mob $15 unlimited data package for my (then) new BB Pearl Smartphone in Nov/Dec of 2007.
There was no mention of non-tethered usage then, and I am loathe o find where this was ever documented either online or in literature given me at the time or even since.
Can anyone advise here?
There were once three brothers (Brotherhood of Thugs): Robbers (Rogers), Hell (Bell) and Anus (Telus). You fill the rest
I got my bb from magog t
2 and I got the storm for free also so that other dude didn't know what he was saying.. Any waya telus is great
Telus is the worlds most useless telephone company in the world . I applied for a Blackberry curve in May of 2009 They tried to activate it! It took them 4 Days to turn on the Phone and then nothing worked! So I get a new phone and a new number again. So they tried activating it again SAME PROBLEM!!! after numerous calls to telus and having some 40 0r 50 so called Tickets on the problem NOTHING IS RESOLVED! So telus gives me a third phone and again a third phone number! Again after 14 hrs of trying to activate it in came on for a day before they shut it off' because I refused to pay the first bill because of no service what so ever and all their bullshit! They still have not turned the phone back on after paying the and have had no service from them what so ever! SO NOW I SUE!
Telus offers the best plans and apart from wait time offer good customer service as well. They have always succesfully resolved any technical issues I've ever had, a couple of times late at night a tech has been over the phone with me troubleshooting problems. I've gone from a Nokia to a BB Pearl to a Storm with them over the last few years and I believe they provide best bang for the buck. P.S bbgeeks review is out of date by many years...
I Have never experienced the worst customer service till I went with Telus. The Blackberry mic phone is the worst garbage in the market and I advise that if your thinking of signing up with Telus DON'T because they have no knowledge of customer service.....I told them I was thinking of cancelling and they told me to go ahead, Who sys that....
In the early days of cellular communications (in British Columbia) you either dealt with BC Cellular (now Telus)or Cantel (now Rogers) - I had an unlimited cell phone account in those days, And carried my phone around in a box - the later models clipped on to my belt, And hung down to my knees :)
Telus were always the best bang for the buck (although the company I worked for had contracts with both companies) - you could walk into a Telus store anytime and they would fix your phone. Rogers would put you through the hoops (and make the company spend extra money) In the end... they dumped Rogers and went with Telus exclusively. Telus will always be reasonable imo (and talk to you) - Rogers will screw you (for all they can get) the best that they can.
Today... Telus will still treat you decent. After buying cell phones for all of my kids... over the years (I have been screwed royally by Rogers and Bell) I can say with confidence that Telus are still the best of the bunch.
Not happy with Telus both storm operating system and Support. First I called Telus twice to make sure my Storm would work in Cuba and was advised yes it would and they set it up for me. Well no it doesn't I had to use a Rogers phone which works fine. Called Telus back to complain and this time was advised that no it wouldn;t not of work there. Also not a happy camper with the operating system been waiting for Version 5.0 which speeds up the phone and fixes the camera. Every time I call "soon" or "no idea" even told to go the Verisons web site and download theirs this is from a Telus Corp. Store. Can't wait for my contract to end and than go to a I-phone.
