Rogers Wireless BlackBerry Service
Editorial Rating
Overview:Rogers is one of the most well-known communications companies in Canada. They encompass not only consumer-related communications, but also are a leading player in radio, TV, news, magazines, and more. Rogers offers wireless, internet, home phone and cable solutions for a variety of users across the country. The Rogers BlackBerry Service is also one of the best in Canada.Pros: The plan prices are quite a bit cheaper than both Telus and Bell, and you have more choice for voice and for data. The prices for going over your data limit and for additional voice minutes are also slightly lower. Like most other services, you get unlimited incoming calls and nights and weekends. You also get call waiting, group calling, detailed billing and unlimited received text messages. Cons: Their cheapest plan only gives you 1 MB of data, whereas Telus and Bell give you at least 4 MB for the same price. Detailed Provider Information:Voice Plan Options: Unlike its other two providers, Rogers includes voice minutes in all of its plans. You can get 150 weekday minutes for $45 or $50, depending on how much data you get; 250 weekday minutes for $55 or $60, and 350 for $75 or $90. You also get extra features like call waiting and group calling added to the plans.Data Options: Rogers’s data plans are a little disappointing – for the same price, you could get more with other companies. However, if you are only looking to send a few emails a day, their lowest plans offer a corresponding amount of data. Rogers seems to price their plans on voice minutes as opposed to data. The lowest amount of data available is 1 MB, and depending on how many voice minutes you want to pay for, the price is either $45, $55, or $60 a month. If you need more data, you can pay $75 for 7 MB or $90 for 25 MB. Additional charges apply if you use more data than you’ve paid for – you could be paying $7-$10 per extra MB. Messaging Options: Rogers offers unlimited received text messaging with its plans. If you want to message, however, you’ll have to purchase one of their value packs, which gives you voice mail and other features as well as picture or text messaging. Customer Service: Rogers has email and phone support on their website, along with a knowledgebase where users can look up any questions they may have. Contract: To buy any of Rogers phones, you must have at least a one-year contract. To terminate your contract, you will need to pay a termination fee and all charges owed. Messaging: Text messaging is an add-on. You get unlimited incoming messaging. International Calling and Messaging: Charges will apply for messaging and texting outside of Canada. You can choose an add-on feature that will allow you to pay extra per month for international calling and messaging. Roaming Charges: Roaming charges apply outside of your calling area and overseas. Activation Fee: You will have to pay an activation fee, decided at account opening. Additional Features: You can choose from essential value packs or individual essentials, which allow you to add features that you want to your plans, including voice mail or texting. Insurance: Rogers offers a courtesy phone and repair program that will give you warranty for 90 days. This is better than any of the other warranty programs reviewed. Phones: Rogers offers the BlackBerry Pearl Flip 8220. They also have a lot of other models to choose from, in many different colors. BlackBerries don't have to be boring! Some Additional BlackBerry Models Available: BlackBerry Bold BlackBerry Pearl 81xx BlackBerry Curve BlackBerry 8820 Coverage Map: The Rogers coverage page can be found here. I must admit that I'd rate them even lower compared to American providers. Cell phone service is SO much more expensive in Canada than in the US. But, I need my blackberry, so, of the Canadian companies, I chose Rogers. I got a new 8800 and while it seems like I have to pay for every little thing and there are no unlimited plans, for a Canadian provider, they seem to be decent. I've got really good coverage, inbound SMS is free and customer support has been very helpful when needed. They get four stars though because twice now I have had to call to have a problem fixed and upon hanging up the phone on both occasions, I lost my "Edge" symbol and as a result, messenger and email. It has been fixed upon calling BACK in, but still, it was annoying to have had it happen in the first place. I definitely don't regret my decision to go with Rogers though.
Rogers has disapointed me since setting up two BB devices - a Curve and a Pearl.
(1) The Customer Service/Billing Dept. is under -trained. I am routinely routed to technical support by billing reps who "have been instructed that all Blackberry calls should go to BB support." This is of course very wrong and I get bounced around to 2-3 reps. For the 1st 5 months I have had to call in and have them correct over billing to my Pearl data plan. Apparantly this was a result of the multiple package codes for the same data plans (Rogers had to keep uping the MBs to keep pace with Telus's plans.) Next they accidently suspended my data plan (thus my service) on my Curve when I adjusted my plan after finding out about the MBs be up'd accross the board. (Note: Rogers of course does not automatically upgrade your plan unless you request it ... tough to do if Rogers does not communicate this to anyone.)
(2) Devices - The Pearl has worked well and I have had no issues. The Curve on the other hand is annoying. I have had to do a hard reboot (remove the battery!) quite a few times after loosing browser service. I have also had to apply a patch to get my meeting reminders to work - which still has not fixed the problem.
(3) Sales - I was more than a little peeved when the 8310 came out with GPS and no calendar issues 2 months after I bought the 8300 - for the same price.
Final thoughts: I left Bell Mobility because their customer service is attrocious. (Does Bell ever make a mistake?) Rogers gets the nod simply because they will credit my account after I have wasted countless hours on the phone with them. Bell never admist error or compensates customers. Basically, Rogers has little to be proud of in my opinion, but hey they gave me an $80 dollar credit.
Rogers has recently updated all of their data plans, and while it is true that you will get bounced around with reps before you get the right one, this is easily corrected by navigating their IVR system correctly, I dunno about Bink, but when I call I never get a regular cust care rep, I always get blackberry support, which I prefer anyways due to the fact they know what I'm talking about, Rogers has been nothing but nice to me, they do require a little pushing to get what you want, but in the end if what your asking for is fair for both sides, you will get what you want...I got my curve launch day based at $349.99 for $100, recently mt girlfriends Pearl started acting weird, trackball not responding, this was an AT&T Unlocked pearl so no warranty through rogers, with a lil pushing I was able to get them to send me a new Pearl for $50, no contract extension, no upgrade fee (normally $35)..aside from the occasional billing error, which is ALWAYS corrected and their HIGH priced data plans (I pay $90 for 350AT/Unlim NW/Unlim MTM/Unlim Txt and 25MB of data) I have had no problems with Rogers, like I say they sometimes just need a ll push to give you want you want..ie..threaten to cancel lol
PROS: service works great, much better than other providers IMHO
CONS: continually over bills me, over $200 in the last two months. General confusion by sales reps when it comes to data plans.
They are more than willing to credit my account for billing errors, but no further compensation is given... I tried. Any suggestions on how I can get something out of these people?
Rogers is the ONLY gsm provider in Canada... and they know it, hence the over-priced plan and close to unusable data plan
Rogers used to be great but as time pass by, they got greedy. Within the last 7 years or so, they manage to blind customer with their hidden fees and over-priced plan
I'll give this a careful look before getting into Rogers if I were you
Terrible,
Overbilled by 2-500 per month for 3 months, argued with CRS regarding plans and data, and to top it off they add your account to your credit file as a revolving account ( think credit card ) what a joke.
Canada has a serous lack of competition between mobile providers. At least bell is honest and consistent with their billing. No suprises
Okay people I have some good news... if you have a Blackberry through Rogers and call them and ask for the 6GB dataplan for the iPhone on your Blackberry they will give it to you. 6GB for $30/month. Only good for a limited time... I think the end of the month.
Rogers is ok if you don't need a data/smart phone. I went to Telus and got unlimited data+email+text for 30$ and 250 daytime +free nights @ 6, weekends, and call id+vm + 3way/call waiting.
That is an employee (corporate employee) plan which you should all have access to through your employer .
Rogers just sucks for data.
Cell phone service in Canada is a joke compared to even 3rd world countries. Data is outrageously expensive, customer service is almost non existent and there doesn't look like much hope of change. More competition needed.
my data plan is only 25 bucks and comes with 500mb, is it a new promotion? or im just lucky 0.o
well it looks like this article will have to be updated... Rogers will no longer offer free received text messages if you don't have a texting plan with them, and will charge 15 cents for every one received
i have been with rogers for more then 5 year...i run my own company... i have be paying them more then $500 every month on my cell phone my son call them more thne 10 times to change the plan we finally had break through after 10 months and called more thne 8 times and talk to rep 4 times... then screwed it up 5 times... i finlly wann to cncl the line and go with bell thne i found out the they had me resign the contract without telling when i change my plan.... nothing else but i had truble....
please stay awy from them
It has been my experience that Rogers CS and tech support are seriously under-trained. I have had to repeatedly instruct them regarding both their plans and phones' capabilities. On the plus side, they seem genuinely eager to solve issues, and learn from their customers. They do have "rules" which often tie their hands, but if you get through to their retention department, they seem to know some "loopholes" that can fix billing issues.
Worst customer service I have ever seen. No accountability.
Love hate relationship. Overpriced but good coverage and reliable service. Thinking of changing over to someone else, but really who can I switch to?
