BBGeekcast: February 6, 2009 – Episode 50

Posted by Joe on February 6, 2009

It’s the gold anniversary for the BBGeekcast. We’re just two weeks shy of a full year, in which we missed zero Fridays. A year straight. Imagine that. Anyway, it’s a bit slow this week, but we still find plenty to talk about, including a U.S. carrier which will debut the Curve later this month.

So click on over here to hear the BBGeekcast (10 min, 41 sec)

And don’t forget to subscribe to the podcast so you won’t miss future episodes!

You can also subscribe to the BBGeekcast in iTunes.

Highlights include:

We kick things off with Sprint, which just offered OS 4.5 updates to its customers this week. This is for the Pearl and Curve — sorry 8830 users. It will be welcome in another way, too: MMS is now enabled. Finally.

The U.S. carrier alluded to above: MetroPCS. They offer prepaid services on their own towers, charging a flat monthly rate for unlimited calling and other services. They’ll launch data services in their older markets starting at the end of this month (that is, not their newer networks in Las Vegas, Philadelphia, New York, and Boston). You’ll need their $50 plan, which is unlimited everything, plus $10 for BIS access. I like the flat rate for BIS, rather than a metered version. Orange UK unveiled a similar plan late last week.

Oh, and the Pearl flip 8230, the CDMA version, is headed for at least Telus and Verizon. Rumors are that Telus could get it by the end of the month. I would imagine Verizon would be around the same time.
