BBGeekcast: December 31, 2009 – Episode 97

Posted by Joe on December 31, 2009

It’s the last show of 2009! It was a good year for RIM, as they released a number of high-quality devices — the Curve 8900, the Tour, the Curve 2, the Storm 2, and the Bold 9700. They’ll surely gear up for a similar year in 2010. But we don’t quite talk about that. Instead, it’s all about RIM’s big promise: security.

Highlights include:

The recent BlackBerry outages have caused outrage among users. We demand reliability, and RIM dropped the ball. While they claimed that it was in part due to a BBM flaw, there are other issues at stake. Carmi Levy of Betanews breaks down RIM’s biggest problem, its centralized network. Yes, that allows for more secure transfers, but it also comes at the expense of reliability. If something happens to the central server, everyone’s out of luck.

So at what point does reliability trump security? Each business and each user will have different answers. RIM would like to avoid the question in the first place, but has plenty of work to do in 2010. If they can’t reliably provide the most secure smartphone, I expect people will sacrifice some security for reliability. That’s not going to help the RIM brand. Not that they don’t know that…

Oh, and we saw a Tour2 hands on. That’s a nice little gift before the new year.
