Every consumer dreams of a white knight cell phone carrier that makes service cheaper for everyone. That doesn’t usually happen, though. A new carrier in Canada, however, could be changing the mobile landscape. Will WIND Mobile’s cheaper, more comprehensive plans and lack of restrictions force change among the Big Three in Canada? That’s our main topic on today’s program.

Highlights include:
WIND Mobile carries three advantages. First is the data consumption. Instead of signing up for a limited data plan with Rogers, you can get unlimited BlackBerry data for $35 with WIND. Second, it requires no contract. Some might see that as a disadvantage, though, as it means no subsidy on a phone. Their phone prices, however, are still slightly subsidized. It appears that the BlackBerry Bold 9700 is $150 more expensive without a contract on Rogers than it is on WIND.
But, since I don’t live in Canada, I thought this was an opportunity to hear more from our Canadian listeners. Leave a comment here, or email me at jpawlikowski at bbgeeks to let me know what you think of the new WIND Mobile plans. Will they work? Or are they too good to be true? Maybe I’ll ask one of you to be on the show next week to explain the issue in greater and more intimate detail.
We also discuss the BlackBerry Essex on Sprint hoax (though it will probably happen eventually) and Wi-Fi on the BlackBerry Pearl 2.

Hey, just listened to the podcast, just wanted to leave some comments, first off I am very excited to see Wind Mobile able to offer service in canada, and in toronto where i live, im with rogers right now and per-month i play about 79.00, and what my plan has is 6gb of data, 200 any time minutes, caller id, vm, and 2000 txt msg, and plus if i was to cancel my contract i would have to pay $100.00 to cancel my data contract which i have to sign for 3 years, plus my voice contract which is 400.00, yes we have different contracts for voice and data, and plus we have to pay a 6.95 SAF which use to be collect by the government, but what is interesting to note is that the government has not collected it in about 10 years and its still called a government fee by the rogers, bell and telus,im going to wait for newer phones to come out from wind and to see if the network is that good before i think about switching. listen to the show every week thanks
