Industry coverage, news, original feature articles, how to guides, videos, podcasts and reviews of BlackBerry service providers, software, accessories, hosted exchange providers and more
The week of WES is finally upon us. We’re going to use our daily post, for the most part, to highlight the happenings from around the convention. Some things we know are coming, but are just awaiting official announcement. Others are a relative surprise, though most of what you’re going to hear has been whispered at some point or another. Today we go into the midnight announcements, which were waiting in my inbox as I awoke this morning. Hint: Nothing on the 9630 yet.
RIM announces BlackBerry Enterprise Server 5.0
While the 5.0 we’ve been most heavily covering has been the operating system, we also knew RIM would announce BES 5.0 at the convention. We’ve been talking about BES 5.0 for quite a while now, so it’s nice to have it finally drop. For more info on the features contained in the new BES, check out BerryReview’s comparison with previous versions.
HP and RIM announce alliance for mobilized business
HP will be at WES to do a couple of demonstrations. These will be for their new programs which are “focused on increasing service levels, reducing operations costs and improving productivity for customers.” These include CloudPrint, a feature which allows users to print from their BlackBerry devices to the nearest printer, and HP Operations Manager for BES, which enhances the basic BES services, allowing IT managers to “monitor and manage the extended BlackBerry solution ecosystem, whether it is virtual or physical.” Look for some more detailed information on these solutions this week.
RIM opens push API to developers
This one is perhaps the best of the lot. While enterprise developers have had access to RIM’s push API for quite some time, it hasn’t been open to applications destined for consumers. That barrier has been removed, as now developers for consumer applications can access the push API and create even more useful applications. This will help greatly with BlackBerry App World. We could see a whole new legion of applications developed over the next few months which can be of enormous use to consumers.
So no 9630 announcement yet, though that should come in due time. Check in again tomorrow morning; if they’ve announced it, we’ll have it then.
