This morning fans of the mobile.blackberry.com website woke up to a surprise. The official mobile site published by RIM has undergone a complete overhaul. . . or underhaul as the case may be.

The site in my opinion has always been slightly underwhelming, as most mobile sites are to someone with a design background. I don’t claim to have any groundbreaking advice or ideas about how to spruce them up, but I can never claim to be impressed. Yahoo Go! is to date the only mobile experience I have had that was worth it’s salt.

In the latest incarnation of the mobile.BlackBerry website has gone to a really basic design with a branded bar at the top of the display and substantial blocky icons associated with each of the main categories.

There is a quick links section available at the top of the home page which sends you off to the latest news and accessories etc.

Below all of this you will find the options to view the site in various supported languages including: Dutch, Spanish, French and Italian.

Getting around the site is as easy as it ever was, the navigation icons are straight forward and easy to identify by text or graphic. Wish they would add a search function though. It is a pain to have to keep scrolling my trackwheel to browse a whole section of the site to see if anything has been added.

Overall, I am not blown away by the design that RIM has put forth and that seems to be the popular sentiment. Check it out and you will see for yourself.
