BlackBerry News From The Wire for the Week of 5/11/2009

Posted by Joe on May 14, 2009

We’re changing things up in light of WES this week. Our morning post will be News From The Wire, and we’ll have a feature-y post headed up later. This is the heavier news from WES. During the week we covered a lot of application related stuff. Now it’s onto the juicy stuff. It’s a bit disappointing, honestly, because we didn’t get two of the more anticipated announcements.

Rumor: Tour 9630 ready for mid-July release
There’s a bit of uncertainty surrounding the BlackBerry Tour 9630 right now. We expected a WES announcement and it did not come. So what’s to become of the ultra-hyped device? BGR found a link on Howard Forums pointing to a July 13th release date. They vouch for the credibility of the poster. This falls in line with the 15th and 17th dates we’ve heard in recent days. Here’s to hoping we get an announcement on that soon.

BlackBerry Onyx gets pictured, speculated
It’s tough to keep up with all the BlackBerry code names out there. Onyx, Driftwood, etc. The latest comes from one of them. It has been pictured in the wild, and it looks sweet, just like the Tour. Apparently, as more information became available on this it was determined that it’s a T-Mo version of the Tour, in the 96xx family, and could hit in September. Yes, it’s a 3G device, and apparently, despite a physical trackball in the photos, it will launch with an optical one. Sounds like we’ve got a few months worth of fodder for the BBGeekcast.

Curve 8900 to hit AT&T for $199
While we still don’t know exactly when the BlackBerry Curve 8900 will hit AT&T shelves, but we finally have an idea of how much it will cost. It appears, at least in the Southwest region, that it will go for $199 on a two-year contract after $100 mail-in rebate. That sounds about right. BGR wonders if this will be the price nationwide, but I think it’s a safe bet that that’s the case.

Curve 8520 to hit T-Mo later this year
At first I found it tough to get excited about the BlackBerry Cuve 8520. After all, there are already a number of perfectly good Curve models out there. Why add another? Then came news of the optical trackpad, and that got me a bit more pumped about it. Now we’re hearing that it could hit T-Mobile in the fourth quarter. That’s good news. Better news is the price: $78 initially, discounted to $48 later on. Now that’s starting to sound worth it. For what it’s worth, BGR loves the optical trackpad.

BlackBerry predictions from bloggers
No, BBGeeks did not attend WES this year. Thankfully, the BB Blogosphere was well represented, as always. In fact, a number of them got together and made some BlackBerry predictions. Some of them were obvious, but there were a number of insightful ones that could certainly appear somewhere down the three-year road. Be sure to check out what the experts are saying.

NIN application readying for BlackBerry
We know that Nine Inch Nails mastermind Trent Reznor is a fan of BlackBerry, especially when compared to that pesky iPhone. Now comes word, via the man’s Twitter feed, that a BlackBerry version of the band’s iPhone app is in the works. Reznor has been on the cutting edge of the music industry, working all sorts of angles to get around traditional record company stagnation. I’m not a huge NIN fan, but I’m definitely excited about this application and what it can mean for the future of music.

TetherBerry gives Mac users some love. Their BlackBerry tethering program now has a Mac version in beta. It’s about time we Mac and BlackBerry users started getting some more love.

Keep up with BBGeeks anywhere. Cooper goes over all the places we exist on the Web. Because just having a blog is so 2006.

New BlackBerry browser SkyFire promises to revolutionize browsing. There’s a lot of hype around SkyFire, but it sounds like it will deliver. Check out the post for some details. Hopefully we’ll get a public beta soon.

Protect your BlackBerry and avoid the bulk with Bodyguardz. I admit, I was reluctant to demo the installation of Bodyguardz protective skin. Its just so…permanent. Yet it went great. Check out the article and the video inside.

News applications from Handmark. They’ve got quite a few. Kyle from BBCool runs down his top 10. I guess he’s not a Knickerbockers fan.
