Flyers of Air Canada will find the ticketing process far easier now. Instead of having to remember a boarding pass for a flight from the airline, all a flyer will have to do is display his or her BlackBerry in order to board the flight. Pretty novel, eh? Air Canada is introducing the service for all of its domestic flights, plus a number of its international destinations, many of which are in the US.
Customers can use the new system by logging on to mobile.aircanada.com and entering their name, departure city and one of the following: Aeroplan number, credit card number or booking reference, an Air Canada press release explained.
Clearly, the main issue in this method’s success is security. We just know hackers will be out there trying to beat this system, and we’re sure they eventually will. Then it’s just a matter of the airline programmers staying a half-step ahead.
We’re eager for this kind of service to hit the U.S., but understand why it’s probably going to be years until this happens. The U.S. isn’t going to do anything to compromise the integrity of its flights, even if it means sacrificing some conveniences.
We’ll see how it goes in Canada.
