Seeing the new BlackBerry devices: Javelin, Kickstart

Posted by Joe on June 17, 2008

After some technical difficulties over the past few days, we’re back. Apologies for the downtime. The bad news is that we missed a few things in the BlackBerry world in our absence. The good news is that we can run through them right now and catch you up, assuming you didn’t find out elsewhere. Which, considering you’re a BlackBerry geek, I’m assuming you did. But let’s take a looksee anyway. First up is the Javelin caught in the wild. And we see the same of the Kickstart.

That’s the Kickstart. Here’s another.

It’s funny to watch the reactions around the Web. The commenters at CrackBerry, while sometimes announcing their distaste for flip phones, are nearly all congratulatory. On the other hand, if you check out the comments at Engadget, they’re not so complimentary. The outsider consensus is that this doesn’t bring anything new to the table. Unfortunately, I kinda agree.

That’s supposedly the Javelin in the wild, though I’m not sure how everyone else is so certain that this is the case. It looks just like the Bold, so for all we know, this could just be another Bold. There’s still a bit of confusion as to what exactly the Javelin is — a non-3G Bold for GSM, or an EVDO Bold. But there it is. Kinda boring, don’t you think?

So it’s safe to say at this point that I’m not too impressed with what we’ve seen so far from these two models from RIM. I take it back for the Javelin if it is in fact the EVDO version of the Bold. That would be cool. But the Kickstart just seems less and less impressive every time we get news about it.

But hey, there’s always the Thunder.
