Nextel BlackBerry 8350i set to drop in Q4

Posted by Joe on August 13, 2008

The kind fellers at Boy Genius Report have scored again. This time, it’s a roadmap of Sprint’s device releases through the rest of the year and into 2009. Of interest to us: the BlackBerry 8350i. It’s in the Curve family, given the model number, and it’s set to drop in the fourth quarter of this year. I wonder how this will play out if Sprint ends up selling the iDEN network, as has been rumored. Anyway, the Nextel 8350i will features WiFi (woo hoo!), GPS, and an optional 2 megapixel camera. Spec sheet, courtesy of BGR, after the jump.

I think the Blackberry Curve 8350i is going to be a great phone! However, to add icing on the cake, I would give the backing of the phone a rubbery covering as well to make it more durable, the trademark of Nextel phones.

#7411 jonah on September 24th, 2008 at 9:03 am

It will notmatter if sprint sells the iden network as their new direct connect devices do not use the iden netowrk for push to talk but use the sprint broadband network instead. All of their new DC devices are like this.they have no use for the iden network besides the sole nextel cusstomers on the network still for revenue, otherwise they would have already sold.

all i want to know is the price of the new blackberry. thanks!

#7923 Lariat on November 13th, 2008 at 8:47 am

Jonah, Don’t be an idiot! Do your homework. Sprint is still marketing new IDEN DC phones and aren’t customers on ALL providers networks just there for revenue? Do you think these wireless companies are non-profit businesses?

IDEN is a huge part of Sprint’s business plan. BTW learn to spell!!!!!

#8103 billy on November 25th, 2008 at 10:33 am

I will buy the new blackberry for myself and my wife. It is about time nextel has a phone like this, but im still waiting for nextel to come out with a touch phone. please do us all a favor and come out with an direct connect touch screen phone.

#8142 Robert Morgan on November 26th, 2008 at 5:25 pm

#8266 Jrod on December 3rd, 2008 at 4:30 pm

it’s december 3 already.. any news ??

#8271 mimi on December 3rd, 2008 at 10:17 pm

i told by a rep on sprint.com that the blackberry was now pushed back to december 15th. I was waiting on dec 1st but it didn’t come out. makes me so mad how the date keeps changing.

#8287 Marissa on December 4th, 2008 at 10:03 pm

I totally agree with !BIlly NExtel needs to come up with a direct connect touch phone! SOon!

#8306 Jen on December 5th, 2008 at 7:02 pm

I really don’t think it will be out Dec. 15th. A Sprint rep. emailed me and said he had no idea whether it would be available online or through stores. Considering it’s a little over a week away from release, it would seem there would be promotional flyers, advertisements, etc. A person on another forum said a Nextel rep. told him Jan.15th. I am really doubtful of a Dec. release.

#8368 billy avery on December 9th, 2008 at 11:44 am

I SPOKE WITH A NEXTEL/SPRINT REP ON 12/8/2008 AND SHE STATED THE PHONE WILL BE OUT ON MONDAY IF NOT SOONER. I REALLY HOPE FOR THE WAIT THE PHONE IS WORTH IT. I’VE BEEN A NEXTEL CUSTOMER FOR OVER 12 YEARS AND I LEFT NEXTEL ON 11/12/2008 AND SWITCHED TO AT&T THE I PHONE AND BY 11/15/2008 I CAME BACK TO NEXTEL. THE AT&T SERVIVE WAS BAD AND I MISSED THE TWO WAY. NEXTEL IS LOOSING LOTS OF CUSTOMERS SO NEXTEL NEEDS TO COME OUT WITH A DIRECT CONNECT TOUCH SCREEN PHONE SOON.. REMEMBER NEXTEL FRIENDS ARE FURR-EVER… I’LL BE A NEXTEL CUSTOMER FOR LIFE….

#8369 billy avery on December 9th, 2008 at 11:45 am

THANK YOU MARISSA FOR AGREEING WITH ME… NEXTEL FRIENDS ARE FURRR- EVER…

#8372 l crazy on December 9th, 2008 at 4:51 pm

i was told Dec 1st and then dec 15th and they have assured me at sprint together with nextel that it will be Dec. 15th although i don’t believe them i will be surprised but i do want this phone and have been waiting patiently for it and yes i have been with nestel 4 ever and a day anbd have had all three blackberry’s up to this point. i need this phone in my life

#8387 Meghan on December 9th, 2008 at 10:08 pm

I spoke with my Nextel rep, and was told that Nextel would probably never get a touch screen phone. So, don’t hold your breath on that. And you have to consider that being true cause we’re all waiting for this Curve that other companies have had for years. If i didn’t need the PTT for work i would have switched a long time ago. Matter of fact i’ve considered carring around two phone but realized it wasn’t worth it.

#8398 patrick on December 10th, 2008 at 12:29 pm

billy i agree with you nextel needs a touch screen phone, but where is this blackberry curve 8350 i?????? hey billy you are right again nextel friends are furrr-ever.

#8438 patrick on December 11th, 2008 at 3:40 pm

WhErE iS ThIS PhOnE ?????????

#8442 Troy Dot Com on December 11th, 2008 at 5:50 pm

They will let you pre-order as of today. It actually shows up in their system. Just ordered mine.

#8448 David on December 11th, 2008 at 8:29 pm

It wouldn’t suprise me if it was March 09. I think they’re having licensing issues, not network issues that’s holding back the release. You know what happens when attorneys get involved, everything slows down to a crawl.

#8468 Chris on December 12th, 2008 at 3:10 pm

I just spoke with a sprint rep, and they informed me that the december 15th date has been pushed back, and there is no info at this time when it will come out.

#8473 Troy Dot Com on December 13th, 2008 at 7:38 am

Yes!!! Sprint emailed me the tracking number for my new nextel blackberry!! It is 1.5 hours from my house as we speak. What is wierd is that the new phone still doesn’t show up on Sprint’s site to order…but the stores can.

#8481 Melissa on December 14th, 2008 at 6:17 pm

It would be freakin great if it had voice record!!!

#8483 Monique on December 14th, 2008 at 11:10 pm

I have the NEXTEL blackberry 7100i. I’m getting sick of it. If NEXTEL don’t hurry up with the new blackberry I’m going else where. I think NEXTEL is BS.

#8491 Peter on December 15th, 2008 at 10:20 am

Just ordered mine from cs will have Wed!!! thank god its all over

#8494 Katie on December 15th, 2008 at 12:40 pm

Just visited Nextel Store. They will be receiving store display Jan. 11 per email they received today. Cannot order Blackberry in-store.??? ARGH!

#8496 Chris on December 15th, 2008 at 1:07 pm

It is now available, on my way to pick it up now.

#8559 Shay on December 18th, 2008 at 2:40 am

Has anyone received the blackberry yet??? I want to know if it’s worth buying?

I was told that you can’t receive text messages like with a normal phone(i.e. a flip phone) is this true? Has Nextel’s network improved any?

#8579 PATRICK on December 18th, 2008 at 2:11 pm

WHAT A GREAT PHONE. IT IS 100 % WORTH BUYING. EVEN PEOPLE THAT HAVE THE I PHONE ARE LIKING THIS PHONE.I THINK NEXTEL WILL GET A LOT OF CUSTOMERS BACK WITH THIS PHONE.

#8585 Johanna on December 18th, 2008 at 4:26 pm

The 8350i was released on Monday, I immediately placed the order on-line and rec’d it Tuesday afternoon, it is awesome, pure quality, you will not regret buying it. I love it.

#8623 big boi six on December 19th, 2008 at 7:39 pm

hey yall nextel is coming out with atouch screen inaboit 9 months ruffly its on the works

#8629 Shay on December 19th, 2008 at 9:46 pm

I’d like to know if service has improved with this phone? For example,do you get service where you normally didn’t with an older Nextel phone? That is my biggest concern.

Can you make your own ringtones with it?

#8693 Larry on December 24th, 2008 at 10:49 am

Picked up on 15th from Best Buy Mobil and love it. Only problem not liking is I have “simply everything plan” and just talked to an associate at Sprint who said the “Phone as Modem” option is available but not for the simply everything plan. I waould have to go back to a minutes plan and then could get for $15.00 a month extra. Yuck! Simply everything plan is the best. This phone is great. Finally a phone with the PTT, MP3, Camara, Video and WiFi and will be capatible with the 4G network once it is out.

#8697 moxy286 on December 24th, 2008 at 11:02 am

My new blackberry is sitting under the christmas tree =) I am so excited!! Totally can’t wait until tomorrow morning to open it!
YEAHHHH!!!

#8714 rich on December 26th, 2008 at 4:00 am

whats up with the sms messaging?!! im cant receive or send text messages (SMS for those who had the i930)!!

but whats up with that??

#8801 Shay on December 29th, 2008 at 2:05 pm

You will probably have to call nextel and tell them that your are having a problem with you texting. I was receiving my messages a day late and even some of the ones I sent out weren’t received until hours later, but I called and was on the phone with them for like five minutes and now it works perfectly.

#8861 keith on January 3rd, 2009 at 7:36 pm

I have the Nextel 8350i, and it is by far the BEST nextel out there. I have had the 8330 Curver from sprint and hands down the 8350i is the last phone i will ever need to buy!!!!! call me if you need to know anything about it at (704) 902-5825 or text!!!!!!!!!!!!

#8884 justin on January 6th, 2009 at 10:19 am

my blackberry lost the sms icon so i cant text if I want to. Can anyone help?

#8891 Jorge on January 6th, 2009 at 4:51 pm

I’ve had the 8350i since December 23 and I really do like it with the exception of the text message problem. I have to constantly reset the phone so I can be sure that I’m receiving my text messages. This doesn’t have the SMS feature but rather, uses the MMS and it’s nice, once you get familiar with it. I contact Sprint Tech Support yesterday and was told that they’re aware of the text message issues and they are working on a fix that should be out in the next 7-15 days. I hope it comes soon because it’s frustrating not getting texts, especially from clients.

#8904 Josh on January 7th, 2009 at 2:14 pm

I’ve always had text message issues with my Nextel Blackberry (7100i). Similar to what you’re all saying…receiving texts an hour or day later. It’s terrible. I’d be surprised if they fixed it right away if at all. If it weren’t for work I’d be on the iPhone band wagon, that phone is sweeeet.

#9042 Bill on January 15th, 2009 at 7:41 pm

Phone coverage is no better than my curve was. I carried an I580 and a curve and wanted to transfer my contacts to the new unit. Sprint store took an hour out of my day ( it’s usually a lot more time when I go in there ) to tell me they couldn’t figure it out. Other than that I really like the phone or at least the idea of it. Oh yeah, I have the texting problem too.

#9047 John L. Shinn III on January 16th, 2009 at 1:46 am

A week ago, I went to Sprint and got the Blackberry 8330. Sprint’s 3G network is blazingly fast. Then I saw a colleague with a Blackberry 8350i, so I went back to Sprint and exchanged the 8330 for the 8350i—since my job requires me to also have a walkie-talkie.
The Sprint salesperson did point out that the 8350i runs on the Nextel radio network, but failed to make it clear that Nextel’s network is slow and nowhere near Sprint’s 3G network. The store only had two 8350i’s and I was lucky enough to get one before they were put out as display models.
Now I’m stuck with the 8350i (since Sprint would only allow one return/exchange within 30 days of purchase) which takes 2, 3 or 4 times longer than the 8330 to open a website. Watching Youtube.com is a joke as Nextel’s network is rather slow.
If you love to surf the ‘net, don’t get the 8350i and stick with Sprint’s 8330 or other 8000 models running on the 3G network. But if you use the walkie-talkie more than you surf the ‘net, then get the 8350i.
I know I cannot have everything in one phone such as the 8350i. But considering that I have to now carry only one phone instead of three (and capable of using a 16gig MicroSD compared to the 8330’s 2 gig capacity) —more than outweighs the shortcomings of the 8350i running on Nextel’s network.
Overall, I’m still happy with the 8350i. I only wished that Nextel runs on the 3G network.

Youtube works good when you are using wi-fi feature, but won’t work on Nextel network. Got mine to Geocache with and love it.
