It’s tough to leave alone an article that proclaims that BlackBerry is tops, even though we already know it. That’s what Brian Deagon did at Investor’s Business Daily. In terms of overall cell phone shipments, RIM holds just 1.4 percent of the global market. But when you narrow that down to just smartphones, they’re No. 1. And that’s a good thing, since smarphone shipments were up 50 percent last year, while overall cell shipments were up just 11 percent. So RIM are kings of a high-end, growing market.
“RIM is substantially ahead of the rest,” said Jack Gold, principal of research firm J. Gold Associates. “But once this (new open operating systems) gets into play, it’s all about who provides the best user experience and who has the most applications.”
Deagon also talks about the hot topic, the iPhone vs. the BlackBerry. He makes sure to note that RIM’s stock has more than doubled since June 29, 2007, the day the iPhone was released.
Jack Gold brings up an even better point later, one I touched on in an article I did for PDAStreet. “Apple is perceived as a threat due to its brand name,” Gold said. “But when you look at what RIM offers that Apple doesn’t, from that view it’s not a real threat.”
And yeah, RIM might give up some market share to Apple in the next year or so, but the overall market will expand. So while the percentages might shift, the overall gains will still be there.
