How big is your BlackBerry address book? The larger it gets, the more chances you have for duplicate entries. There really is nothing worse than that. Type in someone’s name in an address field and you might get six different results, each one with a different email address. And then there’s the issue of one contact card having the person’s phone number, while the other has an email. (Or worse, each one containing a different phone number.) With all the ways to import new contacts to your BlackBerry, it’s pretty easy to get to this point. If you need to clean up your address book, check out the app Contacts Cleaner.

The benefit and burden of Contacts Cleaner is that it works automatically. That is, you just click the button and it does all the work for you, without any prompts. Any duplicate entries get merged into one, so you have an effortlessly clean address book. This is in so many ways better than contact cleaning apps that prompt you at every duplicate. If you have a large address book it can be more trouble than it’s worth.

Of course, because it’s automatic there are some drawbacks. For instance, it tries to match based on first and last name. If it doesn’t find an exact match it might not merge. At the same time, it can mistakenly merge unrelated contacts. If you have 15 Ericas in your contacts list, it might not know which one is which. And you might get Erica B merged with Erica C, because you didn’t specify which was which on your contacts list.

Still, the app is just a buck, and it’s gotten rave reviews on App World — even considering the merging issues. You can get Contacts Cleaner here.
