Like most people, I use my BlackBerry as my alarm clock. It’s the perfect little function for a device that sits on my nightstand anyway. It’s customizable enough that I can set it for the time I want, with the snooze interval that makes me most comfortable. If I’m real ambitious, I can go seek out a specialized alarm app in App World. One thing I hadn’t really considered, though, is using my PlayBook as an alarm. But with the app Get Set – Get Up!, I think that’s all changed. It’s a pretty killer alarm app with feature that I dig.

Last year, I shared one of my favorite BlackBerry tips. It wasn’t anything complicated, like a walk-through of a complex process. Instead it was something that you can do, using your Blackberry and just one pre-loaded application. The tip, one simple way your BlackBerry can save you money, revolved around an idea that John D. Rockefeller espoused: write down everything you spend. It connects you with your money. As you become more conscious you become more discerning, which can mean saying no to extraneous expenses. Your BlackBerry PlayBook has the potential to be much more than a personal entertainment device. In fact, I wrote a post last year detailing exactly that. It can be a great business tool as well as an entertainment device. Just stock it with the right apps and you’re well on your way to having a useful and productive tablet PC. One must-have app is currently in the featured section of App World. It’s called Groovy Notes, and it makes your BlackBerry PlayBook look like a genuine notebook.

Apparently the developer Smarter Apps has heard the complaints about other developers neglecting the BlackBerry platform. Back in February they brought an Angry Birds knock-off to App World. If you’ve taken the opportunity to download Angry Farm, you’ll see that the only real difference between Farm and Birds is the character sets and the color scheme. That makes for an interesting business model. There is certainly a market in creating the best Android and iPhone apps for BlackBerry, since the developers themselves seemingly have no interest. Smarter Apps has a few of these in its arsenal, and it has recently added another with InstaPhoto for the BlackBerry PlayBook, which is its version of PhotoBooth, the popular iOS app.
