When we feature apps on BBGeeks, I try to get it when the price on the app is low. So frequently these apps go on sale, and I’d really rather you not pay $5 for an app that goes on sale for $2 a week later. Problem is, it’s often difficult to determine when an app is headed down in price, or, for that matter, how long it will remain on sale. Every so often I’ll try to run through apps we’ve featured previously to see if they’re on sale. Today I’ve got a few that are worth trying and currently running at a discount.

SBSH Calendar Pro

We ran a big review and contest for Calendar Pro, as it is one of the most powerful calendar accompaniments for BlackBerry. It integrates with your appointments and tasks, creating a more full-featured calendar experience. It also has tons of settings so that you can customize nearly every aspect of the app, including the colors it displays. The only downside to the app was that it cost $14.95, which is a bit more than many of our readers expect to pay. But it has been deeply discounted for a while now, so if you enjoyed the review but did not enjoy the price, you can now get SBSH Calendar Pro for $5.99.

FileScout

Kids who grew up in the MS DOS generation were used to having access to all parts of their computers. If you knew just a few commands you could pull up full directories of files. Even when we transitioned to Windows we had pretty easy access to everything via File Manager and Windows Explorer. But on your BlackBerry it seems that everything is hidden from plain sight. I’ve always wanted to have a File Manager type application so I could browse through and find out what’s what on my device. FileScout does exactly that. It is one of my must-have apps any time I get a new device. It usually runs $6.99, but right now you can get FileScout for $4.99. Honestly, it’s well worth the $7, so you might as well jump on it for $5.

AppLock

Locking individual apps, rather than the entire device, seems to be the in thing right now. I’ve noticed a ton of these apps popping up for Android, and there have always been plenty for BlackBerry. The original, though, is AppLock. It lets you choose what apps to lock and what ones to leave open. This can be used as an extra level of security, or you can use it instead of password protecting your entire device. I use it for the latter, because my device locks often. I unlock the device in general more frequently than I check my email, so it does save me a few instances of tapping in my password. When we first featured the app it was $2.99, but now you can get AppLock for just a buck.

ImgEdit

A little while back we were looking through various BlackBerry app stores to find a suitable image editing app. We’ve since found a few, but as you can see in the linked post there wasn’t always a big selection. In fact, when I wrote that back in September I don’t even think ImgEdit was in the BBGeeks Store. It was in App World at the time, for $3.99, but it has by now made the jump to MobiHand. It’s also a bit easier on the wallet, at least now. It came into the BBGeeks Store at $7.99, but it is now reduced. You can get ImEdit for $1.99. That’s a nifty price for a basic photo editor.

Free is great, especially when what’s free is a $200 smartphone. So you’ll be pleased to know that The Weather Channel is giving away a BlackBerry Curve 8900 for every day of June. The best part is that you can play the game every day — twice, even. We’ll give some of the free details after the jump.

To enter, you can go to the Web contest page. Here you’ll enter your personal information — a big turn-off for many potential entrants. You can check out ePrice’s privacy policy as well as that of the Weather Channel for more details.

Anyway, after you enter your personal information, you’ll be notified of whether you’re a winner. Chances are you won’t be (you loser), but that doesn’t mean your chances end. You can enter the very next day. Or, you can make another entry that day from your BlackBerry (or other mobile device). Just head to taketheweather.mtiny.mobi/ on your mobile browser to get another shot every day.

For all the legalese of the contest, you can check the official rules. We’ve pretty much spelled it out, thought. Give up personal information subject to two privacy policies, get a chance to win a BlackBerry Curve 8900. The official rules say that it’s based on your carrier preference, which means your preference between AT&T and T-Mobile. Of course, once you win the device the service isn’t free.

Thanks to BlackBerry Rocks for the heads-up.

Do you want a new BlackBerry for the holidays? Sure you do. Problem is, those things can get expensive. Head to, say, Alltel’s BlackBerry site and you’ll see deals on phones that usually cross the $100 plateau. If that’s a bit steep for you, you might want to check out some of the deals we have going on. Not only can you find cheaper deals, you might even be able to find ones that will essentially pay you for the phone. Now how about that? Let’s take a look at some of the best BlackBerry deals this holiday season.

Before we dive in, note that most of these devices require you to mail-in a rebate form to get the full deal. Do not let the form sit in a drawer until it’s too late. The carriers are offering you money, and you should take advantage. If you don’t, it’s just more money in their pockets.

Also, all devices require a new activation. If you’d like to extend your current contract, there will be an option for that as well when you select the device. Since there are five major carriers, we’ll pick one from each.

Alltel – BlackBerry Pearl 8130

Love the BlackBerry but don’t want a phone that’s so bulky? Research In Motion figured you might. So it developed the BlackBerry Pearl. The CDMA version of the phone, the 8130, hit shelves a little over a year ago, and it’s still one of the top smartphones on the market. It’s got all the features you love in a BlackBerry, but it’s considerably thinner. Along with it comes the SureType keyboard, which amounts to a half-QWERTY.

Alltel has a great deal on the Pearl. You can get it for free. Oh, but it gets better. It comes with a $100 rebate, so if you take the time to fill out and mail in the form you will find yourself a little bit richer. You can also get it in red.

AT&T – BlackBerry Bold

An upfront warning: this one won’t be free. Yet, it still represents a great deal. The Bold is one of the most hyped devices of 2008. It was announced at WES and fought through numerous delays before it hit AT&T in November. Now it’s here to stay. You can only get it on AT&T in the U.S., so we basically had to feature it here. That’s not to say that the fully-equipped Bold doesn’t deliver the goods. It has multimedia capabilities like none other, and a high-res screen that’ll make you drool.

As we mentioned the other day, the Bold costs $399.99 through AT&T even with a contract. They do offer a $100 rebate, though, bringing the device down to $299.99. What if I said you could get it for $150? Might that be something you’re interested in? I thought so. This is by far the best deal on a Bold out there, so give it a look.

Verizon – BlackBerry Curve 8330

It’s my weapon of choice. Walking around the city, I see it’s the same for a number of people. The 8330 hit the market with much fanfare, as it was the first CDMA Curve. Along with Verizon, Sprint and Alltel also carry it. Verizon’s also gotten a little generous this holiday season, as they’ve enabled GPS for BlackBerry Maps. While it’s not a full GPS jailbreak, it’s still a step forward. I can actually have my passenger use it for driving directions now. Geeze, it only took forever for them to enable it.

So I got some good news/bad news on the Curve. First the bad news. There isn’t a rebate. Yeah, that kind of softens things. But, the good news is that you can get it for free. You might not be pocketing a sweet rebate check, but you won’t be paying for the device. You can also get it in pink.

T-Mobile – BlackBerry Curve 8320

Yes, another Curve. Maybe it’s an inherent bias in me. Maybe it’s because the Curve really is cooler. Or maybe it’s because T-Mobile’s Curve features Wi-Fi. See? That’s a pretty cool addition. No GPS, of course, but hey, they’ve got to save room under the hood for the rest of the goodies. T-Mobile does have a couple of Pearls for free that will pay you a $50 rebate, but those are the old 8100 models. Come on. You can do better than that. They also have the Pearl 8120 for free, but hey, we’re talking about the Curve here. You mind?

How much would you pay for a BlackBerry Curve with Wi-Fi? $100? $50? How about free after a $100 rebate? Yeah, that sounds about right. That link is for the titanium color. You can also get the Curve in sunset red. See? Not only are we offering great Berry deals, but we’re offering choices on color, too.

Sprint – BlackBerry Pearl 8130

Yes, we’re back to the Pearl. There’s not much left that hasn’t been said about it, so let’s get right into the actual offer.

Sprint offers the 8130 for $99.99, which is at least $99.99 more than the other phones listed. Of course, like the others, they offer a mail-in rebate. It’s $100, so you can get it for free. That’s the link for the Amethyst color, which is this awesomely-sweet black. It looks particularly cool if you use a gold wallpaper. You can also get it in red.

I’m going to cheat for a second here, though. See, we’ve been through five BlackBerry models, so the article should be done. But, I’m going to show my Curve bias just one more time. Through Sprint, you can get the Curve 8330 in titanium for free. After rebate, of course. That one is available in red as well.

So if you’re looking to get a BlackBerry for the holidays and someone says it’s too expensive, show them this list. If you’re looking to give one, you’re at the right place. True, the true cost of BlackBerry ownership can be a bit steep, but if you get the device out of the way that’s one fewer cost.

The holiday season is upon us, which means three things to many of us: Shopping, shopping, and shopping. Which means three things for your immediate future: lines, lines, and lines. Unless you’re one of those savvy shoppers who can find the best deals online. We’re giving you that opportunity now, with the Biggest, Baddest Mobile Heist yet at the BBGeeks Store. From November 25 through December 1, you can save on a ton of BlackBerry software.

When I say a ton, I really mean it. Most of this software is half off normal price, up to $20. This means that normally expensive applications like Media Studio for BlackBerry, listing at $34.95, is now reduced to $17.48. Ascendo DataVault, originally $29.95, is down to $14.98.

Even cheaper programs, like Aerize Email Alerts, are cheaper. That was originally $10, now $5. Getting together with old friends on Thanksgiving Eve? The normally cheap Mobile Bartender for BlackBerry is now reduced to $3.98.

Hurry, though, if you want to take advantage of these deals. Mobile Heist only lasts through December 1.

It was barely four months ago that AT&T released the BlackBerry Pearl 8110. In fact, that came just a month after they launched the Pearl 8120. While the WiFi-equipped 8120 still carries a $199.99 price tag, the 8110 has been reduced. Previously offered for $149.99 with a two-year contract, they’ve changed the rebate, handing you back $50 from a $179.99 two-year contract price. So it falls to $129.99.

Of course, Verizon has been discounting its Pearl, with a $149.99 two-year contract price tag, by $70, leaving it with a pretty $79.99. The downside, of course, is that you have to pay to access the GPS, and even then can only use it through Verizon’s VZNavigator software.

For months, ever since we saw the first pictures of the CDMA Curve, we were pumped for its release. That was back in February, and we didn’t see the first one released, through Alltel, on May 1. So that’s nearly three months of hype. Now it’s been nearly three months since release, and you can get one free through Wirefly with Verizon Wireless service. [h/t BerryReview, via Robb]

Of course, you have to sign your life away to a two-year contract. Then again, don’t you do that every time you get a new BlackBerry? So this sounds like quite the outstanding deal for anyone looking to switch to the Curve, or otherwise enter the world of BlackBerry with one. If Verizon isn’t your bag, you can nab a free one through LetsTalk.com, though that involves dropping $75 and mailing in a rebate form. Which you’ll forget about anyway.

There’s a catch, as there always is. The price of the Curve is being slashed for a good reason, or good reasons. Those being the impending releases of a new line of BlackBerry models. These include the Bold, which we’re still eagerly awaiting, the Thunder, the Javelin, and the Kickstart.

Regardless, the Curve is still a killer device, and if you can in fact nab one for free with a two-year contract, you might want to consider it. I know I’m pondering extending mine…

Okay, so it’s not cool like the new CDMA Curve. But if you sign up for AT&T service, or extend your contract with them, you can get a free refurbished BlackBerry Curve 8310s. It’s got GPS, Bluetooth, a 2-megapixel camera, and access to AT&T Mobile Music. If you don’t mind refurb models, it’s tough to beat the deal. I’m fairly certain that we won’t see another version of the Curve, or at least anytime soon, so if you want to nab one, now is the time if you’re with AT&T. This promotion runs through this Thursday, April 24. This is an online promotion, so head to AT&T’s website if you’re interested.

We at BBGeeks are quite big fans of the guys and gals at CrackBerry. It’s a great community. And now they’re looking to grow. They’re running a Valentine’s Day contest where you can win a new BlackBerry (preferably red or pink, they say), or up to $300 in accessories from the ShopCrackBerry.com store. All you have to do is hit up their contests page and read the directions. Or you can just get a summary from us.

There are really two ways to enter. First is by being a member and referring others to the community. For every person you refer, your name is placed into the ballot box. Not only that, but your referral — or as they call it, your CrackBerry Mate — is also placed in the drawing. So you have two chances to win, since both names are put on each ballot.

The other way is to be referred to the site by a current member. So if you’re looking to sign up, you can be entered in the contest by being referred by another member. And then you can refer your own members, increasing your chances to win.

The winner, as we said, will get a free BlackBerry. The CrackBerry Mate of the winner will get $200 to spend at the ShopCrackBerry store. If that isn’t sweet enough, they’re also offering $100 to spend at the ShopCrackBerry store for the person with the most referrals.

There are plenty of ways to win, so head over there today, sign up via a referral, and then start signing others up.

Kevin from over at CrackBerry.com sent us a note the other day mentioning some pretty cool things they have going on over there this month.

First up is that they made a free holiday theme for the BlackBerry if you’re the type to get into the spirit with your gadgets.

They’ve also come up with a pretty cool contest/event they’re calling the 12 days of CrackBerry Holiday Giveaway . We’re guessing the 12 days of Crackmas might have ruffled a few feathers (it was a joke, please don’t stone us). ;-) They are giving away a ton of stuff so if free is for you, you might want to hop on over and check them out.

Speaking of giveaways, note that the New Year will be bringing a lot of new things for BBGeeks.com, including some awesome contests and give aways of our own. Be sure to stay subscribed to the feed so you won’t miss out!
