If you receive an email containing a link to a ringtone that you want to download, open the email, highlight the URL, and select Get Link. Depending on the software used, if a URL is not clickable, you can just copy and paste the address directly into your mobile browser. Then follow these steps:

Save the downloaded file, either to the ringtones folder on your Blackberry or onto a memory card (if you have one installed). If both are options, using the card conserves a bit of memory.

• After the download completes, leave the browser.

How to Create Your Own Ringtones

If you want to turn an existing audio or photo file into a custom ringtone or graphic, without having to purchase any software, check out Mobile17.com.

Existing sound files that have been saved in other formats can also be converted into the Blackberry-compatible MP3s using software on your own computer. Ringtone Converter for Mac and Create-Ringtone for Windows are examples of applications that can do the job. iTunes 8 and above (for Mac and Windows) can also be used to create 30-second (or less) MP3 clippings for use as ringtones.

How to Transfer Ringtone Files from a Windows PC

There are two ways to transfer a downloaded ringtone file from a Windows PC onto your Blackberry. If you have a memory card installed in your Blackberry and Mass Storage Mode is enabled, you may simply drag the file over. Here are the steps:

• Install the memory card as per instructions that came with the device.
• Go to Options -> Media Card
• Change the Media Card Support setting to “On.”
• Change Auto Enable Mass Storage Mode When Connected to “Yes.”

Afterward, each time the Blackberry is connected to your PC, a dialog box will pop up, you will be able to select “Open a Folder to View Files” and the memory card will display all of the folders it contains. Open the Blackberry folder, then the ringtones folder, and you will be able to drag the downloaded ringtone file and drop it right into the ringtones folder.

The second option is using the Roxio Media Manager software than came with your device. Here’s how to do it:

• Open Blackberry Desktop Manager, load Media Manager, and make sure your phone is connected.
• In Media Manager, select the Folders tab to view the list of files on your computer.
• Scroll (if necessary) to view the folder containing the downloaded ringtone file that you want to transfer, and select it.
• In the lower left window, under My Devices, select the “ringtones” folder.
• Click “Copy Down.”
• In the Copy Files box, click the “Convert for Optimal Playback” bullet, then the OK button.

After the file transfers to your Blackberry, you’re good to go.

How to Transfer Ringtone Files from a Mac

It is easy to transfer ringtones from an Apple computer running Mac OS X onto your Blackberry OS 4.2 (and newer) device using Bluetooth. Just follow these steps:

• Open the Media application on your Blackberry.

• Select Preloaded Ringtones, My RingTones, or All Ringtones (as desired).

The best part about the application is the ease. Since it’s a quicklaunch, it takes you to a simple mobile website, where you can browse the top tones, or enter a search term. I wanted me some Zeppelin, so I typed it in and got dozens of results. Unfortunately, half of them were Stairway (No Stairway. Denied). I found “The Ocean,” though, so my phone is now rocking the Zep.

Ok, I lied in the last paragraph. While the ease might be great, the best feature is that you can set your new ringtone to default as you download it. Just check the box, and voila! It’s set to go.

Ok, I lied again. The best part is that it’s free. The users provide the content, and since there are 546,953 members at the time of this writing, I expect there to be an abundant supply of ringtones at Next Pimp now and in the future.

NextPimp gets you real ringtones for your BlackBerry – free

The first step you need to take in order to outfit your BlackBerry with custom ringtones is to find a decent software package to help you convert your great idea/favorite song into an audio format supported by your particular hardware. (Scroll to the end of the article for a complete list of BlackBerry models and their various levels of ringtone support.)

There are countless options out there; some are free, and others carry a cost. For the purpose of this walkthrough, we have decided to focus on one particular product, named DJ ToneXpress.

The overall process of creating a custom ringtone while having variances in specific steps will be similar across the majority of software packages available. Therefore, even if you do not opt to go with the software profiled here, the process discussed in this guide will hopefully be of use to you going forward.

One of the reasons we have decided to profile this particular software package is that it allows for potential customers to download a trial version for evaluation before purchase.

Disclosure: You will not be able to download the final ringtone created using trial software for free.

NOTE: It is important to keep in mind that not every model of phone on every carrier will be able to interface with the DJToneXpress Ringtone Creator. Before you decide to download/purchase this software, please navigate to the following URL to perform a compatibility test.

Now that you have determined that you are able to use the ringtone creator published by DJ ToneXpress, let’s download the trial version and have some fun.

Downloading the DJToneXpress software trial version

If you still have the compatibility testing page open in your browser, look to the colored blocks along the right rail. Click on the colored block labeled “Try It”. If you have already closed your browser session, simply click this link to download the DJToneExpress trial software to your PC.

Once the “Try It” link is clicked, you will be prompted to download the trial software. Click “Save File” and choose the appropriate location where you would like this file saved on your computer.

When the short download is complete (2.80 MB), navigate to the location you have saved the executable file and double click the setup icon.

Agree to the presented License Agreement and choose the directory you would like to install your new ringtone software. When the installation has completed, click the “Finish” button to launch the application right away. You will note that an icon has now been placed on your desktop for easy access to the DJToneXpress software. (When using the free demo version, you will be presented with a screen upon launch, which suggests that you purchase and register a copy of the software. You will be asked at the end of the creation process as well.)

Making your first ringtone

Selecting a great song

The first step to creating a ringtone that will wow all your friends is to pick a song that rocks. Whatever you do, please think carefully about what your custom ringtone says about you. There is already a great number of boring/cheesy/overused ringtones assaulting the senses of unsuspecting people every day. Make sure your choice is either clever or just plain badass!

DJToneXpress offers support for many audio formats. These include:

• MP3
• WMA
• OGG/Vorbis
• WAV (including your own voice recordings)
• Select Audio CD Tracks
• AAC,M4A, MP4 (This functionality only applies to DRM free music files)

Once you have decided which song you would like to craft into your new ringtone, use the browse button, located in the lower right of the DJToneXpress window, to select the music file. Click the continue button to import your chosen file into the ringtone editor.

DJToneXpress will now perform an audit of your selected file and transform it into an editable waveform.

Making your Ringtone

Once your imported file has been transformed into an editable waveform, you will be asked to select a portion of the song/recording to “ringtonize”. This selection can be anywhere from 5 seconds to 30 seconds in length.

There are a number of options you are presented with which make it incredibly easy to select a specific section of your song, either lengthening it or shortening it as required. You also have the option of adding a fade in or fade out to your selection in the event that your selection does not end on a clean beat or break.

Selecting the right audio

By default, the first 5 seconds of your song will be selected as the base for your new ringtone. If this is not exactly what you had in mind, you can change it pretty easily. Position your cursor over top of the highlighted area and click and drag the selection to the desired location.

Start/End

The first editing option you will want to use is the start/end tabs. When you place your mouse over the words “start” or “end” on either side of the selection area, you will notice that the titles get replaced by a set of outward-facing arrows. Clicking on the tab will show the arrows move apart slightly. This visual indication shows that you can now slide the selected tab to the right or left of its current position. Through a combination of sliding both the start and end tabs, you can crop your selection to include only the audio data you wish to be captured in your ringtone.

Zoom

The zoom button is where you will want to look next. Clicking on this button will enhance the view of audio timeline, making it easier to determine the pattern associated with specific sounds in the song. Use the zoom mode to fine-tune your selection.

Hint: If you are creating ringtones longer than 5 seconds and are having a little trouble getting the exact end point you want, simply make note of the start time in the lower right corner of the timeline and slide the start tab to the right, leaving the minimum amount of audio selected. Since there is no fast forward or jump to option while in playback mode, this little step will save you lots of time. You will not have to listen to the entire 20 – 30 second clip, just 5 seconds of it. Quickly determine your end point and then move the start tab back to its original position.

Fade in and Fade out

In the event that you cannot get a clean start point or end point using the song you have selected, there is a fade in and fade out option available to you. In the lower right corner of the DJToneXpress window, there are two check boxes, one for each fade option. Check either box or both boxes to apply the effect accordingly.

That’s all there is to making your new custom ringtone. Play it back as a whole a couple more times and make sure you like it. After all, it will be blaring from your hip on a regular basis from now on.

Click the continue button will tell DJToneXpress that you are ready to go. The software will finalize your audio clip and compress it into a proper ringtone.

Sending the ringtone to your phone

This is where the free demo ends. You are presented with two options. The first option is to purchase a full license for your PC and continue with the sending of the message to your phone. This option costs a one-time fee of $16.95, but will allow you to use the software going forward to create as many ringtones as you like.

The second option is to pay $2.99 for the single ringtone you have just created.

WARNING

It is important to note that there may be additional charges applied by your local carrier for sending ringtones to your phone via WAP. Wherever possible, you should stick with sending the ringtones to your phone via PC connection.

A very special warning to all Verizon Wireless customers out there who are thinking of purchasing this software: the program will only send a QCP file, which is very poor quality. Unfortunately for you guys, as well, you do not have the functionality of sending your ringtones via PC connection. You will have to shop elsewhere.

Creating Custom Ringtones for your BlackBerry

And, of course, you can set your own custom ringtones. When you’re one of the millions of BlackBerry users, your ringtone may be the only thing that separates you from the crowd. Thankfully, there are a number of Internet sites that can help you find the perfect ringtone for your personality.

Unfortunately, a Google search for BlackBerry ringtones yields confusing results. There are thousands of results, and most of them don’t provide what is advertised. In fact, of the 2,580,000 search results for the term “BlackBerry ringtones,” only a small handful actually provide that.

Instead of wading through all those results, we’ve compiled a few lists that will make your search much easier. First there’s the list of free ringtones, unlimited ringtones (pay services), and ringtone editors that allow you to make your own.

If, however, you can’t find exactly what you want and decide to roam through the jungle of search results, please keep in a mind a few things that will save a lot of frustration along the way:

1) Just ignore any site on a .edu server. Half of these are dead links, the other half are just advertisements for ringtone sites (half of which are dead, themselves).

2) Watch out for WAP sites, as they are mainly advertisements, too.

3) Most sites will make you enter your provider and number as a prerequisite. Beware when entering information into these sites. You never know what telemarketing lists you’ll end up on. Plus, there’s a good chance you won’t find what you’re looking for, anyway.

4) If the site title is very long, chances are it’s that way to generate the most search results. You’ll be disappointed if you think you’ll find something useful at these sites.

Now onto the sites that will give you BlackBerry ringtones.

Free Ringtones

The official BlackBerry site has an area where you can browse ringtones (http://mobile.blackberry.com — it must be accessed by a BlacBerry browser). Some are pay, but there is a free section you can look through and find something fitting for you. They may not be great, but at least you know no one’s going to slap you with a lawsuit for using them.

An increasingly popular site for BlackBerry ringtones has been Tuneusin.com. It has a large library of free ringtones that you can save and use on your BlackBerry. In addition, it offers a program that allows you to make ringtones from your own music library (more of these to follow). However, this program isn’t free — it’s $14.99, which is about on par with similar programs.

Free Ringtones (http://www.cyzeal.com/free-ringtones.html) is exactly what the name says: a program that allows you to access free ringtones. It’s comparable to download clients like Kazaa and Limewire, but it is dedicated solely to ringtones — polyphonic, mp3, and realtones. It may not be the best service out there, but once again, it’s free, and certainly worth browsing around to see if you can find something you like.

Crackberry (http://www.crackberry.com) now has a decent selection of free ringtones. Many of these you can’t really find anywhere else, which helps make up for a lesser mainstream selection than some other BlackBerry ringtone sites. Plus, they have the best “phone ringing” ringtone we’ve ever heard (it’s like one you’d hear in a Bugs Bunny cartoon). The only downside, as we see it, is that the tones aren’t labeled very well, making it a bit tougher to find what you’re looking for. But if it’s off-beat ringtones you seek, Crackberry should be your first stop.

Pay Sites

The bad news: if you want a good selection of BlackBerry ringtones, you’ll probably have to pay. The good news is that unlike ringtone sites for most cell phones where you have to pay per tone, BlackBerry ringtones are available in an unlimited format. Just pay an up-front fee, and have access to extensive libraries of mp3 ringtones. Instead of browsing through a website, these services come in the form of a software download.

Jamster.com is a great resource for Ringtones for your BlackBerry. For only $9.99 a month you are granted access to ringtones of all types (polyphonic, RealTones etc.) covering music from thousands of artists and the tones are the real songs and not midi type files. For those with video capabilities on their BlackBerry devices you can also get video tones from Jamster! They also have a coupon for a free ringtone.

BlackBerry Ring Tone Megaplex (http://www.handango.com/) is considered to be one of the top sites in this category. It offers a selection of over 1,000 different ringtones. They are updated frequently, and a subscriptions lasts for a whole year. The cost is $19.95 for the year, which is at the upper end. But, you get upper end service for the price, so it works out well.

Funtonia.com is a comprehensive ringtone site, with over 450,000 ringtones in their library. It is a bit more expensive than the others: $23.88 for a year. However, they do offer a plan for those who don’t want the whole year: $17.97 for three months of access. If you’re looking for something specific (and with their large library, you’re bound to find it) and want to keep your expenses under $20, the three-month plan is ideal.

Create Your Own Ringtones

The greatest advancement in ringtone technology has been the ability for users to create their own ringtones from any music library. While most of these services and programs are fee-based, it can be well worth it for people who like to change their ringtones frequently.

For detailed video instructions on how to take mp3s on the Internet and convert them into ringtones for your BlackBerry, visit http://crackberry.com/how-add-free-ringtones-your-BlackBerry. They use tuneusin as an example, but it can be used for any mp3 freely available on the Internet.

BlackBerryTunes.com offers an Internet-based way to create your own ringtones. You can upload your songs to the site, convert and edit them, and bring them back to your BlackBerry as a ringtone. Choose any portion of your favorite song, upload it, edit it, and it’s yours. The service costs $29.99 for four months of unlimited access. It’s best for those who want to convert a lot at once.

After that, there are a number of programs that allow you to make the conversion right on your desktop. They’re all similar in nature. What differs is how much the program does (conversion, editing, wallpaper, etc.), and the price.

The Ringtone Maker (http://www.theringtonemaker.com). The cost is $16.49, and it offers creation and editing services.

DJ Tone Xpress (http://djtonexpress.com). It’s very similar to The Ringtone Maker, right down to features and price ($16.95). It does offer a free trial, though.

Kylix Ringtone Maker (http://all4ringtone.com). It offers conversion and editing, though the price is a bit higher ($19.95). However, if you can get an article published in a renown Internet or print source, or can translate a help file, they offer it free of charge. If you’re a writer or programmer, this is definitely worth a look.

Ringtone Media Studio (http://ringtonemediastudio.com). In addition to the conversion and editing features, this program allows you to compose your own custom ringtones. It also offers wallpaper and screensaver creation, and a video editor. This is an absolute must-have if you’re playing with a new BlackBerry 8800.

Ring Factory (http://ringfactory.net). This offers the cheapest solution to creating ringtones ($9.95), but that’s just for the conversion program. It does offer program bundles, though, that can allow you to rip DVDs to your computer or iPod. The program is simple, but it works and it’s cheap, so if you’re looking for the best value, this is it.

There are hundreds of other sites that claim to offer these ringtone services. However, with so much scamming going on around the Internet, it’s best to stick with these ones. Why go experimenting when you can get any song you want using one or any of these methods?
