Ever go to a bar or restaurant and see some guy, probably with his girlfriend, checking his BlackBerry constantly? You might be thinking to yourself, “Wow, that guy must have a stressful job if he’s checking his BlackBerry like a madman when he’s out at dinner.” Chances are, though, that his job is not necessarily stressful. Rather, he’s probably checking the scores of his favorite sports teams. The BlackBerry has made this easy, and a number of third party applications have made it even easier. So let’s take a look into the ones that will help you best keep up with your favorite teams, across all the major sports.

It wasn’t too long ago that Cooper was getting geeked for the FlipSide BlackBerry MP3 player. Today, I’m going to take a look at another loaded media player for BlackBerry: MiuTunes. Like FlipSide, MiuTunes stands far above the default BlackBerry media player…though that could change once we start seeing OS 4.5 released. For now, though, let’s take a look at what makes MiuTunes a cool and easy interface for listening to music on your BlackBerry.

It’s been a while since we’ve talked about BlackBerry instant messaging on BBGeeks. We did have a deal on the IM+ messenger an all in one service. Problem is, it costs a cool $50, and most people, at least the ones I know, aren’t willing to drop that on an IM client. That, and there are reports out there of the client crashing BlackBerry devices left and right. So we’re still looking for another quality client. Some prefer EQO, but let’s look at another: Palringo.

When we talked about Vlingo’s voice-controlled BlackBerry application last week, I promised to take it for a test spin. Since then, we found out that there are some issues with the software, and that for some users it does not work as advertised. This was later to be found by Vlingo to be mainly with T-Mobile and Rogers users. I’m a CDMA faithful, though, so let’s see if I can get through this test drive without issue. The goal is to prove or disprove Vlingo’s hype that this will change the way we use the BlackBerry forever.

Over the past month, we’ve gone over a number of visual voicemail services: GotVoice, SpinVox, YouMail, and SimulSays. While each of these services offers similar features, not all visual voicemail interfaces are created equal. It’s come time for us to sort through these four and pick the best. We’ll rate them according to four categories: User interface, cost-benefits, transcription accuracy, and extras.

Themes have been a popular theme (pun intended) on the BBGeeks site in the last little while. We have covered installing new themes and have profiled a number of great themes developed by individuals in the BlackBerry community.

Ok, so I have been playing around with my BlackBerry recently and I have been looking at ways to customize it a bit. Until now I have stayed away from adding new themes to my BlackBerry. I have always liked the default option and have been focussed on adding cool new apps and games instead. It is not like I have been unaware of the vast quantity of themes available for my BlackBerry , after all, I wrote an article showing you hundreds of free themes that you can download. While I hope you have all found themes in that list that have made it onto your devices, it is now my turn to play around with them and give you my impressions =)

Judging by the number of voicemail solutions I’ve run into over the past few months, it would appear that there is a real problem with carrier voicemail. In recent weeks we’ve talked about SpinVox and GotVoice, two companies that provide voicemail transcription services. And you know what? I absolutely loved them, and may never use my carrier voicemail ever again. Today, we’re going to talk about a similar service, this of the visual voicemail ilk: YouMail.

Do you actually enjoy listening to your voicemails? Unless I have a missed call from an attractive female, I usually don’t. The problem, as I see it, is that people just don’t know how to leave a voice message. I’ll either get no information, or way, way, way too much info. So I’ve been searching for solutions.
Last week, we looked at GotVoice, a service that converts your voicemails to a text message and an email. Today, I’ll take a peek at SpinVox, a company that has been making a splash in the industry. I caught up with them at CTIA, and then again at WES. And I have to say that I’m impressed with what they bring to the table.
