Geek Review: eOffice 4.5 for BlackBerry

One of the things that’s been noticeably lacking from BlackBerry devices has been a native document editor. That’s all changing, as Documents on the Go will come with OS 4.5 and up. However, even here it is just a program which allows you to edit documents attached to emails — though there are workarounds. If you’re looking for a document editor and creator, you might want to check out eOffice 4.5 for BlackBerry (the link to the store is version 4.3.027, but will be updated — as will the price).

Keeping track of your fitness with BlackBerry

Posted by Joe on September 9, 2008

Two weeks ago, I took the plunge. Unsatisfied with my physique, brought on by spending most of my day in front of a desk, I joined my local gym. I’m no noob: in my early 20s I was a workout hound. Hardly missed days. Had actual muscles. Now? Not so much.

After taking a week or so to work myself back into it, I’m about to start an actual training regimen. How to keep track of my progress, though? I’ve never liked the idea of bringing a clipboard along. It’s too big, and, though it shouldn’t matter, I look like way too much of a dork. What about using my BlackBerry, though?

Getting psychic with your BlackBerry

Posted by Joe on September 4, 2008

Living in New York City, I often run into people with strange hobbies. Many of these involve the psychic realm. They might not be Madam Cleo, but many of these people take their psychic readings seriously. This involves everything from palm reading to tarot cards to astrology and horoscopes. There’s one thing that links at least a few of them: BlackBerry.

You can’t walk 10 steps in this city without seeing someone working on their ‘Berry. This doesn’t exclude the psychics among us. They use their BlackBerry just like you and me. So why not use it to further their hobbies? Just for these guys and gals, we’ll take a look at some of the stranger apps for BlackBerry.

Checking traffic conditions from your BlackBerry

Posted by Joe on September 2, 2008

What’s on your checklist before you take a drive? Cell phone, wallet/purse, keys. And then come the little extras: iPod, Bluetooth, applicable chargers, etc. For most people, checking traffic conditions is not on that list. Yet, doesn’t it make just as much sense as the first three item? Your iPod might be a nice luxury, but it isn’t necessary to get from Point A to Point B. Traffic conditions, on the other hand, can greatly affect your trip.

Previously, the only way to check on potential congestion was on a local news channel. Even then, you have to check at the right time for the update. Now, though, we’re seeing a number of applications for the BlackBerry which can greatly aide your travel time and frustration. Today, we look at traffic applications for your BlackBerry.

Track your flight information and status with BlackBerry

Posted by Joe on August 26, 2008

We’re always coming up with new ways to use our BlackBerry devices. Once a simple email device, we’re now becoming power users, figuring out how to things we never imagined with just a pocket-sized device. This could be the lead-in for nearly any type of application, but I’ve chosen it particularly for travel services. If you have a BlackBerry, you’re probably an on-the-go type of worker. It might mean you’re working from home, but it also might mean you travel a lot. So logic would dictate that eventually, applications would surface which help you find flight information. Today, we’ll take a look at the best flight tracking and information applications available for BlackBerry. As always, we’re going to miss some. Feel free to add any you use in the comments.

Geek Review: MyCaption voice email

Posted by Joe on August 20, 2008

We’ve been all over the voice powered services here at BBGeeks. Whether it’s translating incoming speech to text, as in the visual voicemail services, or translating outgoing speech, like Vlingo, it appears that this new trend won’t be dying anytime soon. Though some might think that voice activated apps are stupid, it’s clear that they can be of great advantage to a number of BlackBerry users, especially those who spend time in the car.

The best in BlackBerry sudoku applications

Posted by Joe on August 12, 2008

Have you caught the sudoku craze yet? While it’s not new by any means, sudoku has become an immensely popular game in the U.S. For those unfamiliar, the object is to fill the numbers one through nine into a nine by nine square, divided into nine boxes. Each box, row, and column must have one through nine without repeats. It makes for an excellent combination of fun and thinking — and it can be beyond frustrating when you realize that you have two fours in the same row and have to start over again. Today, we’ll take a look at the better sudoku applications for the BlackBerry.

Hands on review of the BlackBerry Bold

Posted by Joe on August 12, 2008

Back at WES, I had the pleasure of meeting David Flynn, a journalist from Australia. Today, I was going through some BlackBerry literature when I noticed an enormous review of the BlackBerry Bold in APC magazine. And whose byline do I see on that article? David Flynn. So check it out. It’s probably the best review of the Bold I’ve seen yet.

Geek Review: Zumobi

Posted by Joe on July 29, 2008

When Zumobi announced their mobile tiles application for BlackBerry a few weeks ago, I knew it would be the topic of a Geek Review. So I went to get.zumobi.com from my BlackBerry browser, followed some quick instructions, and downloaded it to my 8830. Perfect. So it was time to test it out, and review it for the masses for last Tuesday.

That didn’t quite go as expected.

The best in BlackBerry sports applications

Posted by Joe on July 17, 2008

Ever go to a bar or restaurant and see some guy, probably with his girlfriend, checking his BlackBerry constantly? You might be thinking to yourself, “Wow, that guy must have a stressful job if he’s checking his BlackBerry like a madman when he’s out at dinner.” Chances are, though, that his job is not necessarily stressful. Rather, he’s probably checking the scores of his favorite sports teams. The BlackBerry has made this easy, and a number of third party applications have made it even easier. So let’s take a look into the ones that will help you best keep up with your favorite teams, across all the major sports.
