Are you as smart as the top 10 percent of people in the world? While there’s no real way to tell, there is one logic puzzle that, according to Japanese businesses, can weed out the 10 percent from the 90 percent. It’s called The River Test, and it’s set up as any logic puzzle. You have an objective, and then a set of parameters that you must follow. (Anyone who has studied for the LSATs is all too familiar with this.) Apparently this one is tougher than your average, or even above average, logic puzzle. If you want to give it ago, there’s a free BlackBerry app that can keep you focused on the task.

For starters, while I haven’t checked with any Japanese businesses on this, I’m fairly certain they don’t give this as a test to senior execs. There is an answer, and that answer is probably easily findable with a simple google search. If you’re in line for an executive position, why wouldn’t you just look up the answer online?

In any case, if you’re interested in the challenge, you can download the app. While you could just as easily work this out on pen and paper, having the app handy makes it a bit easier. It makes it easier to focus on the problem, and it gives you a visual interface. I find that it helps get my brain firing in different ways.

If you’re ready to challenge yourself, go download The River Test from App World. If you finish, take a screenshot, upload it to Flickr or other service, and post the URL in the comments.

By this point, you’d think that Angry Birds, one of the most popular and addictive smartphone games, would have made its way to BlackBerry. Alas, Rovio has continued to ignore the BlackBerry-toting masses. This leaves room for competitive knock-offs, and Smarter Apps has taken advantage. They’ve developed Angry Farm, which works in a nearly identical way. Fling farm animals through the air to fend off those sly foxes. The only downside is that while Angry Birds is free for Android and 99 cents for iPhone, Angry Farm is a touch more expensive at $4.99. There have been complaints of lag, but Ronen at BerryReview found that a reboot helps mitigate the issue. Video walk-through after the jump.

Whenever I travel I try to have a few activities to keep me busy. These will mostly consist of reading, but that’s not enough. My eyes get tired eventually, and I crave a video game. But without a portable gaming system I’m out of luck. Thankfully, there’s always Word Mole on my BlackBerry. It’s not the greatest, but it’s free. Here are some other free word games for your BlackBerry that can keep you entertained as you move to and fro this holiday season.

The first is WordSearch, a new and free game from our store. There’s not much really to explain with this one. It’s a basic word search game. It provides puzzles of different sizes: 8×6, 10×7, 12×9, and 15×12. With over 2,700 different words you could play this for a while before you’re finding the same words over and over again. That’s fine — it is free, after all. You can get WordSearch at the Store. If you really dig it you can buy the premium version, which includes bigger puzzles, for $1.49.

WordDefense is another game, but this requires a bit more proficiency with the keyboard. Basically, you type words as they appear on your screen — the faster the better. In that way it’s akin to an app that helps boost your typing speed. But it’s pretty fun at the same time. And it can make you look busy, too. I’m sure I looked like a guy furiously typing an email when people saw me playing it on the subway. You can get the first three levels of WordDefense for free. The full app just costs a buck.

We’ll be enjoying the turkey tomorrow, so you won’t see us around these parts. From all of us here at BBGeeks, Happy Thanksgiving.

It seems as though we’re nearing a revolution in mobile gaming. With the preponderance of app stores, we’re seeing more and more games available to people. We’re also seeing more games with remote multiplayer functions, so you can play friends, or even a random stranger, over your mobile connection. We’re also seeing more tie-ins with social services. All of this is why I think that games like WordRival will get even better in the near future. But it’s still an excellent game now. I installed it yesterday and it was a great way to kill a long train ride.

There’s no need to explain the game in depth. It’s essentially along the lines of Scrabble, where you take the letters in your hand and build off existing tiles to create new words. It even has the bonus squares. The best feature, I think, is that there is no single player mode. There’s no matching up against some second-rate AI. You have to face someone else. Which, of course, can be a problem if no one is waiting to play. But with some more advancements in mobile gaming we could certainly see robust communities for games like this.

OpenFeint is already bringing together mobile gamers on different platforms. Facebook is another way people can match up for games like this. Integrating BBM into this Scrabble-like game also seems like an ideal usage. Playing with BBM friends and simultaneously trash talking your poindexter vocabulary could provide hours of fun.

If you’re looking for some ways to kill time on this Friday, you can get WordRival for $3.99. It will run on BlackBerry devices running OS 5 or higher, both non-touch and touchscreen devices.

Lately I’ve become a bit bored with the games on my BlackBerry. I’ve gone through the ones that interest me on our 250 free BlackBerry games list, so now it’s time to do a bit more exploring. That means heading to the BBGeeks Store. The catch, though, is that while I’m willing to pay for useful applications, I’m not willing to pay much, if anything, for games. I spend enough on console games that I can’t justify creating extra budget for mobile games. So I tend to look at the free games. That led me to a series called Keys. It’s a quiz application for OS 6 that is surprisingly fun. If you’re a Torch owner, you might want to give it a look.

The main application has a number of different subjects. For the trial I did state capitals, thinking it would be easy. While it is, in a way, it’s not exactly what I had in mind. The state capital starts with a bunch of question marks, and you have to fill in the blanks. Letters reveal themselves one at a time, making your guessing a bit easier. At the same time, image results scroll along the bottom. So there’s plenty of associative information to help you get the correct answer. There are plenty of other learning techniques in the application, like a memory game, flash cards, and more.

Really, though, Keys is not an app. It’s a WebKit-based browser game. That makes it a bit difficult to navigate at times, but all in all I found it to be a positive experience. I got my means of killing time, and I actually might learn something in the process. Sounds like a winner to me.

Best of all, the basic app is free. You can get Keys right here. If you like that, the developer, TEARN media, has plenty of other versions. You can check them out here. They’re either free or come with a free trial, so have at it. Again, you’ll need OS 6 to run this.

There are all different ways you can use your BlackBerry to kill idle time. You can load up a memory card with music and jam out to your favorite tunes. You can read RSS feeds or even ebooks. You can play one of hundreds of games, including a couple of neat pre-loaded ones. But sometimes that gets old and you’ll want new entertainment. Lately in the Store I’ve noticed a series of trivia apps going up. A company called FanWide has released a series of 23 (so far) trivia games, which are great ways to kill time.

Each pack comes with a different set of questions. For $1.50 you get the trivia app, plus 1,100 general knowledge questions. Then there are plenty of expansion packs, including another 1,100-question general knowledge pack.

(LOL, by the way, at the VJ Singh option in the screenshot. They didn’t even spell his name right.)

There are also packs that cover sports and entertainment. You can get a trivia game with tons of questions about Books & Lit, Comics & Superheroes, Movie Classics, or TV from the 2000s. Then there’s sports, starting with a 1,200 question pack about american sports, followed by one for each of the majors (baseball, basketball, football, soccer, golf, and hockey).

If you’re looking to kill some time, you can browse the list of trivia packs. It looks like there’s something for everyone in there.

I don’t think I’d be alone in listing Paperboy as one of my favorite childhood games. I was a bit young to enjoy it during its arcade run, but I certainly had the Nintendo version, and even dust off my old copy once in a while (when my NES actually works). It was also one of the first games I downloaded in college when I realized the brilliance of NES emulators. Now you can get that same experience on your BlackBerry. Elite Systems Group has released an officially licensed version for your BlackBerry.

There’s really not much to describe with this game. You basically ride down the street and toss papers to subscribers, breaking windows along the way. Just watch out for the mower with a mind of its own, and especially that old hag who chases you down the street. Again, there’s no need to go any deeper than that. Anyone who buys this game is already familiar with it. I doubt any young’uns will enjoy our nostalgia ride.

You can get Paperboy at App World for $4.99. It is compatible with most BlackBerry models, from the Pearl through the Tour. According to the App World page, however, it’s not available for the Bolds 9000 and 9700. I wonder if that’s just an oversight.

In News From The Wire yesterday I said I’d take a closer look at Desktop Manager for Mac, which was recently leaked. But then I started using it, and realized that there’s nothing much to add. We already took a look at it last week, and not much has changed. We’ll do up a walk-through as a reference once it’s officially released, but for now it’s not worth a short blurb when there have been short blurbs already. Fret not, for there is something to gander at heading into the holiday weekend. You remember Dope Wars, the text-based game where you buy and sell drugs for fun and profit? They now have a BlackBerry version of it, Berry Wars. And it’s just as addictive as the old one.

The object of the game is simple. Buy drugs cheaply and sell them at their highest in order to turn the greatest possible profit. Along the way you’ll encounter rivals, whom you must fight or flee from, so make sure you load up on guns and armor. And watch out for cops. Always watch out for cops.

The game brings back plenty of memories. I remember playing it on my old 386 MHz processor (along with a ton of other games on enormous floppy disks), and then finding it again in high school when I got a graphing calculator. Between that and Tetris, not much got done in pre-calc and calc.

Wouldn’t you know it — there’s a sale on the game at the BBGeeks Store. You can get Berry Wars for $2.99 from now through September 11. It’s $3.99 otherwise. Unfortunately, it’s for OS 4.6 devices and up.

There was a whole section for Tetris clones in our best free BlackBerry games. So why are we talking about another one? Because it’s my favorite one. The guys at BlackBerry Cool have news of an update to BBTetris. It’s nothing major from what I can tell, but the say that it will help save battery life. After the jump, a screen shot and the download links.

This isn’t going to last long — two days, it looks like. If you’ve been wanting to pick up a BlackBerry game from Bplay, you can get 20 percent off from now through the end of the month. Just head to Bplay’s site and pick out what you want. At checkout time, use coupon code Email20. Hat tip to Kevin for bringing it to my attention.
