As we heard they’d do earlier in the week, RIM went ahead and released the newest version of Facebook for BlackBerry. It brings plenty of changes, including a new, sleek user interface, native Facebook chat, and tons of other features, including BBM integration. There’s a full breakdown at Inside BlackBerry, where you can get some neat-looking screen shots. Make sure to watch the video above, too, for an excellent walk-through of the newest features. If your phone doesn’t automatically update, you can download Facebook for BlackBerry from App World. You’ll need OS 5 or better. If you have a PlayBook, you can download that version here.
There is a reason that the Facebook for BlackBerry app gets only two stars in App World. It’s a pretty crude version of Facebook, one that pales in comparison to its Android and iPhone counterparts. Last week, in fact, Facebook announced that it would be working harder on its Android app. BlackBerry? Not so much. We did get a new beta version in late October, and that did add some decent features. As of now that version, 1.9.0.20, is available to the public via App World. It’s not a revolution by any stretch, but it’s certainly an improvement over what was a borderline unusable app.

What’s the one BlackBerry app you think needs the most improving? If you said Facebook, then you’re attuned to the most common complaint among BlackBerry users. Seriously, we get a lot of comments and emails, and a ton of them involve the Facebook for BlackBerry app. It appears as though some relief is on the way. Via Inside BlackBerry we learn that Facebook for BlackBerry version 1.8 has been added to Beta Zone. There are some new features that seem like welcome additions to the app.

If it seems like a new version of the Facebook BlackBerry app came out not too long ago, you’re not mistaken. We saw version 1.6 hit the airwaves in June, but it looks like that won’t hold back version 1.7. Boy Genius Report puts us on the scent for the newest version, which should be released some time this month. It comes from this Polish page, though Google translate probably doesn’t do this much justice. Anyway, there are a few new features which you might find useful.

As you may very well know, we here at BBGeeks.com are big fans of the Facebook for BlackBerry application. When it first arrived on the scene we welcomed it with open arms and a guided video tour.
There was always one little thing that bothered us about the application however; and that was the fact that, despite the removal from the main site, the cursed “IS” prefix remained in place taunting us with Facebook updates that read like a first grader wrote them.

Well, it only took five months, but today, RIM sent out an email to users of the BlackBerry Facebook application that the forced “is” status has finally been removed from the application.
“An important update is now available with the following change: The “View Status Updates” feature no longer contains “is”.
The update itself was simple enough. I clicked the link in the email and went to a page that gave me a link to download the application. I agreed to some terms and conditions and then clicked the download button. My BlackBerry then issued the following prompt:

So, yesterday we mentioned how we were a bit robbed of the “remove the is from the Facebook status” victory because the Facebook Blackberry software application was still forcing the “is” in the status updates.
Well, when I was looking at my status updates screen from the app last night, I realized suddenly that a lot of my friends seemed to be illiterate:

Many Facebook users were overjoyed this morning to see that Facebook had finally relented and made the “is” in the status updates optional. Now you can be any preposition or verb you’d like! ;-)
One small snag though for those of us using the incredibly handy Facebook BlackBerry App… we still are forced to use the “is” at the time of this posting.

Ever since the release of the Facebook application for BlackBerry, there have been countless posts made online about both its benefits and its shortcomings.
One specific complaint is the fact that this application seems to be draining the battery life of some early adopters.

Scouring the web, we came across this anecdote of someone who had their BlackBerry crash after a week of using the Facebook application. The problem lies right in the application’s convenience. Messages and alerts from Facebook are sent to your phone, but instead of being hosted on Facebook’s servers, they are stored locally on your phone. For this user, it caused his email, call history, and Facebook messages to be deleted.
So what about you? Any issues among the BlackBerry faithful regarding the new application?
