While at the CTIA Wireless convention, I was able to get my hands on a product I’ve talked about a few times in the past. It’s the OtterBox Defender case for the BlackBerry 8800 series. It’s billed as the the most protective case in the business, offering three levels of protection. I’ve spent a week with the case now, and here’s my take:

Crime-fighting application appears on BlackBerry
Posted by Joe on March 14, 2008
Imagine if Batman had a BlackBerry. Man, just think of all the nifty things he could do with it. For starters, he could probably ditch half of his utility belt. No, I doubt he could shoot his grappling hook out of the BlackBerry’s speaker, but he sure could use it to get information on the Joker and that pestilent Penguin. Maybe the folks at BIO-key International had Batman in mind when they released the PocketCop application this week. It’s a law enforcement tool that allows officers to get information on things like wanted persons and stolen property right from their handheld devices.

OtterBox now available for Pearl
Posted by Joe on February 27, 2008
Last year, we saw the introduction of the OtterBox, a super-protective casing for your BlackBerry. This was available for most models, but notably absent was the Pearl. But now with the launch of the 8130 and 8120, OtterBox has incentive to release a case for the model. And they have, as they’ve introduced the OtterBox 1936. It protects your BlackBerry while allowing full access to the trackball, USB port, camera, and self-portrait mirror. Oh, and you’ll also get a venting system that protects your speaker phone while allowing it to be used muffle-free. So basically you’re getting top-notch protection without any loss of functionality. Sounds ripe to me.

RIM looks to hook your BlackBerry to your stereo
Posted by Joe on January 31, 2008
If you believe the media, you think that the BlackBerry is in some heated rivalry with the iPhone. A few months ago, many experts considered that bunk. RIM hadn’t shown a decline in sales since the inception of the iPhone. Plus, the BlackBerry focuses on the business market, while the iPhone is widely considered a consumer phone. Then things changed a bit. Apple announced that they would be offering Enterprise services for the iPhone. And now we’re seeing RIM make a consumer-related move: Offering a device that hooks your BlackBerry up to your stereo.

Posted by Joe on January 24, 2008
If there’s any knock on BlackBerrys, its that they all look the same. Well, unless you’ve got T-Mobile, or are planning to buy a red or pink Pearl from Verizon, Alltel, or Sprint. Well, now’s your chance to stand out from the crowd. Goldstriker, the company that will literally turn your gadgets into gold, is offering a custom BlackBerry donned in leather. PocketGPSWorld reviews BlackBerry car cradle
Posted by Joe on January 15, 2008
We’re figuring to see a lot of these in the near future — heck, there are probably plenty of them already. We know that the BlackBerry 8800 series — as well as the new Pearls — have GPS capabilities. This is great for those of us who travel frequently by car. Just plug in your destination and get turn-by-turn directions. Ah, but where do you put the device in your car? You’ve got a few options, but unless you’ve got a cradle like the Carcomm one, you might be moving your head too often for safety on the road.

All we have to say is: WOO HOO! Sling Media, creators of the Slingbox, have announced that the BlackBerry version of SlingPlayer will be available sometime in the not-so-distant future. For those of you unfamiliar, Slingbox is a device placed on top of your TV, which allows you to view exactly what’s on that TV on a mobile device. It was started for laptops, and is expanding to other mobile devices. It’s already available on Windows Mobile, Palm, and Symbian platform phones.

Posted by Joe on December 28, 2007
Are you jealous of T-Mobile BlackBerry Pearl users, who get to choose from a number of colors? Sick of your gray or black BlackBerry? Colorware, a company that, well, colors your electronic devices, will offer the service for BlackBerry smartphones starting on December 31. This adds to their arsenal, which includes the iPhone and the Sidekick, in addition to other devices like iPods, laptops, and more.

Create a WiFi hotspot with your BlackBerry
Posted by Joe on December 6, 2007
This is one of the neatest devices we’ve seen in a while. It’s a tiny device called the PHS300 by CradlePoint. All you have to do is hook up your 3G EVDO device to it, and it creates an instant WiFi hotspot. Pretty neat, huh?

At the International Consumer Electronics Show this year, WildCharge Inc. brought home the Best of Innovations Award with its WildCharger, a desk pad that charges multiple electronic devices. Just place the device — your BlackBerry, your MP3 player, etc. — on the pad, and it begins charging up, just as if it was plugged in.

Watch TV on your BlackBerry with Slingbox
Posted by Joe on September 27, 2007
Ever hear of Slingbox? It’s this neat little contraption that we heard of while listening to our endless hours of sports talk radio. What you do is hook the box up to your TV. Then, through the power of the Internets, your TV feed is broadcast to your desktop or laptop computer. So if you’re away on business and your hotel doesn’t get some of your local channels, you can just watch your home TV through your Slingbox. Ah, but what about those instances where you don’t have an Internet connection? Or, in the case of hotels, if you don’t want to pay them for Internet access. Well, the creators of Slingbox are working on software that would allow you to view your home TV on your BlackBerry.

Introducing some serious BlackBerry protection
Posted by Joe on September 5, 2007
There are tons and tons of cases for your BlackBerry out there, and we find it hard to believe that some people don’t take advantage. Even if it’s out of your pocket and attached to a belt clip, it still stands to incur some serious damage over time. You invested a lot of money in the device, and therefore should be protecting it in any way possible. Problem is, a lot of the BlackBerry cases just don’t pass muster. Otter Products thinks they have a solution: the OtterBox 1933. It fits a BlackBerry 8800, 8820, and 8830 — and it seems durable enough to make your BlackBerry last much longer.

Better battery life coming for BlackBerry
Posted by Joe on June 29, 2007
Can we be frank for a moment and admit a fault of ours? We’re simply horrible at explaining technical mumbo jumbo. For the most part, we understand it; at least at a base level. But when we try to explain highly technical things (for instance, pending patents), we sometimes confuse even ourselves. We can’t imagine what that does to you, the loyal reader. So we’re going to link out and hope you guys can follow someone who is much better at explaining these things.
