Se7en2: Yes, that's on tap for the near future.

Kyle: From all my friends on AT&T with BlackBerrys, you can't use the GPS w/o TeleNav. Of course, that could be wrong. But Google Maps does not use GPS. It triangulates your position using cell towers. I can use that with Verizon.

David B: I'm not sure, because I still haven't ponied up $10 for the navigator. Maybe I'll get a 24-hour use one and check it out.

What I would like to know is if I pay the $10/month for VZNav, will the GPS location also be available to other apps on my 'berry like BB Maps or Google Maps? Anyone know?

@Se7en2: anecdotal reports are that the BT pucks Telenav sells WILL work such things as Google Maps and Blackberry Maps on a VZW 8830, without paying for VZNav service.

What >I

I have an 8830 through VZW and purchased a bluetooth GPS receiver that works with google maps as well as blackberry maps. No voice turn by turn since not paying a subscription but good enough for what I needed. The receiver fits on my keychain and is a Freedom mini GPS.

Another free navigational program is Nav4All. It works with builtin and Bluetooth GPS units. I'm using it with a Pearl 8100 and Bluetooth Socket GPS unit. It works great and has lots of features.

Any plans to research external, bluetooth GPS receivers that can bypass your cell company's lockdown of your phone and be used with both pay and free mapping software? I have an 8830 from VZW, and would be interested in something like that, to avoid a monthly fee.

Sprint also does not lock the GPS. You can pay for their service or use Google Maps for free.
