Saving your BlackBerry battery life

If there’s one complaint I’ve heard about the BlackBerry, and really about smartphones in general, it’s that the battery life leaves much to be desired. When I picked up my 8830 back in January, I wondered what these people meant. My battery would last into Day 3 after a charge. Yet, a few months later, I’m cursing the lithium-ion, as I have to charge the thing basically every day.

Over the past few weeks, I’ve been looking for ways to save my battery life, so that I can get through a day without the green, low-battery LCD flashing. Seeing this in my peripheral vision makes me think I have a new messages, and that gets a bit annoying over time. So here are a few ways you can cut down on your BlackBerry battery usage.

Doctors warn against walking and chewing gum texting

Posted by Joe on July 31, 2008

Think you can multitask? Your doctor probably disagrees. This week, the American College of Emergency Physicians issued a warning to all you text-walkers out there. Yeah, I’m talking about the guy who slammed into my back while crossing 8th Avenue at 17th Street the other day. I saw you playing on your iPhone. Anyway, the doctors are saying they see a good number of injuries related to people text messaging while walking, and then befalling some clumsy fate, like tripping over a crack in the sidewalk. The best line of the article after the jump.

8 Ways to Trim the Fat From Your BlackBerry

Posted by Cooper on July 30, 2008

If you are anything like me, then you have a BlackBerry with 1000 icons on your applications screen (ok maybe not 1000, but you get my point), unused themes in the double digits and an available memory block that gets smaller and smaller by the minute.

Once you add in the BlackBerry ringtones, contacts and pictures that I have not bothered to transfer to my PC, it is not hard to tell why my device is starting to run a little slow now and then.

I was digging around last night to find various ways to reduce the amount of memory I am using in my BlackBerry and the internet has proved quite fruitful. As I was digging and finding all kinds of cool tips, I thought to myself - This is really something I should share with the BBGeeks =)

So this morning I got to typing and I now present to you a handful of ways to free your BlackBerry memory.

AOL Mail survey: We’re pretty addicted

Posted by Joe on July 30, 2008

Every year, AOL issues a survey regarding email addiction. Since many BlackBerry users consider themselves email addicts, I figured we’d take a look.

What’s surprising is that only 51 percent of respondents said they check email more than four times a day. Really, though, what constitutes one instance of checking email? I’ve got my Gmail and a mail client, plus my BlackBerry, around all day. If I click over to Thunderbird, does that mean I’ve checked my email? If so, I probably check it a dozen or two times a day. I’m sure more than 51 percent of the people I talk to can say the same.

Geek Review: Zumobi

Posted by Joe on July 29, 2008

When Zumobi announced their mobile tiles application for BlackBerry a few weeks ago, I knew it would be the topic of a Geek Review. So I went to get.zumobi.com from my BlackBerry browser, followed some quick instructions, and downloaded it to my 8830. Perfect. So it was time to test it out, and review it for the masses for last Tuesday.

That didn’t quite go as expected.

New Bold info: AT&T gets shipments, preorder available

Posted by Joe on July 29, 2008

Yesterday, we learned from BlackBerry News that AT&T has received “seed stock” of the BlackBerry Bold. These are basically for training purposes, though BBN points out that seed stock normally doesn’t show up in inventory unless we’re less than 30 days away from launch. I wouldn’t take that seriously, though. All signs still point to the September 1 release. But could you get it sooner through a third party?

Wait. There’s a BlackBerry Curve Sunset?

Posted by Joe on July 28, 2008

I was getting all sorrowful, sitting down at my keyboard to relay some news from TmoNews regarding the BlackBerry Curve Sunset. Then I realized that I hadn’t yet heard of this model. Not that it’s anything new feature-wise. It looks like the plain old 8320, only in a killer red color. My only question: With the Kickstart coming soon and the Javelin rumored, how does a new Curve, sans new features, fit in? I suppose RIM and T-Mobile have the answers to that one. Still, it looks pretty killer. So if you were on the fence about getting a Curve, maybe this pushes you over. Pic after the jump.

BlackBerry Bold browser video walkthrough

Posted by Joe on July 25, 2008

There hasn’t been too much news from the world of BlackBerry this week, which leads me to believe we’re nearing an announcement on the Bold. Or maybe I’m just being hopelessly optimistic. We’ll talk more about that in the BBGeekcast. For today, though, we’re going to treat you to some in-depth info on the BlackBerry Bold. The boys at Boy Genius Report do a video walk-through. I kinda wish they had used BBScreenStream, but then again, who knows if it’s available for the new OS. Watch it after the jump.

Xtensor relieves your BlackBerry Thumb

Posted by Joe on July 24, 2008

It seems we’re seeing more and more news on BlackBerry thumb lately. With RIM now topping 16 million devices worldwide, it isn’t much of a surprise. It’s like gamer’s thumb back in the day, and that was never a pleasant experience, or so I’ve heard. Laptop Magazine has gotten their hands on the Xtensor, a contraption that gives your fingers a workout, and which might just help prevent BlackBerry thumb.
