Rumor: BlackBerry Javelin to hit T-Mobile

An interesting tidbit comes our way from BlackBerry News. It appears that the BlackBerry Javelin’s API was found to have T-Mobile WLAN error codes. This isn’t to say that it will be exclusive. But it appears that T-Mo customers will see the device. As Boy Genius Report said last month, it will have WiFi, so it would be a good fit with T-Mo.
Google revamps search feature for BlackBerry
Posted by Joe on June 30, 2008
Google has been making a heavy mobile push of late, especially with BlackBerry. Their latest development is the enhancement of their basic search function. Instead of having search results separated by news, images, products, blogs, etc., they are now blended and ranked by relevancy. So if you’re searching for, say, Scarlett Johansson, an image result might pop up first, followed by a news block regarding her recent film. They’ve also elongated the blurbs on the main search results page, so you might not even have to click through to the new page. And finally, they’ve added related searches to the bottom, in case you can find something more relevant to what you’re seeking. Video demo after the jump.

BBGeekcast: June 27, 2008 - Episode 18
Posted by Joe on June 27, 2008
We never like to hear about delays in BlackBerry releases. But it seems we’re getting just that, as rumors swirl that the BlackBerry Bold won’t see an AT&T shelf until mid-August. Once again, it’s just a rumor, but this one seems to have some traction. Yet it appears Rogers is still on track for a July release. Could AT&T be purposely holding back the Bold in favor of the iPhone? Some have suggested as such. I’m not sure it makes sense. But listen up for the details.
So click on over here to hear the BBGeekcast (7 min, 14 sec)
And don’t forget to subscribe to the podcast so you won’t miss future episodes!

What would you give up before your BlackBerry?
Posted by Joe on June 27, 2008
I caught this article from Seeking Alpha, regarding rising tech stocks, including RIM. But that’s not the BlackBerry-related part from this article, though it is an interesting read. Rather, the author uses the following quote: “Modern consumers would eat pancakes for breakfast, lunch, and dinner before they would get rid of their Blackberry.” So I got to thinking, I’m a geek for the BlackBerry, but would I really eat pancakes (I thought the joke was ramen?) rather than give up my BB?

Vlingo introduces voice controlled BlackBerry
Posted by Joe on June 26, 2008
Vlingo, a speech recognition company, made quite a splash at CTIA in April. They were quiet at their booth, not saying much about their company other than they specialized in speech recognition software. Then, the very next day, they were announced as Yahoo!’s partner in oneSearch. Now they’ve added an application for BlackBerry which will allow you to control your device’s features with your voice. We’ll definitely be testing it out, and seeing how it fits in with other voice services like onSearch and Tellme. Video demo after the jump.

RIM barely misses first quarter estimates
Posted by Joe on June 26, 2008
RIM released their financial information for the first quarter yesterday. How did they do? According to Bloomberg, they slightly missed the mark. Their analysts predicted $2.27 billion in sales, while RIM recorded $2.24 billion. What’s more is that they didn’t give sparkling predictions for the second quarter, based on an increase in marketing expenditures. Yes, that’s in an effort to compete with the iPhone, which will hit shelves on July 11. Still, it wasn’t all bad for RIM.

BlackBerry Bold on AT&T delayed until August?
Posted by Joe on June 25, 2008
We start the day on a bitter note. According to The Boy Genius, AT&T still isn’t satisfied with the battery life and the overheating issues of the BlackBerry Bold. They haven’t certified it, and as a result we’re facing a delay, probably until mid-August. BGR is citing two “high level sources,” and apparently this is being taken seriously. If so, it would be a shame for U.S. BlackBerry customers. No such delay is rumored at Rogers, who still have their release parties. Once again, though, nothing is official, and we’ll continue pursuing this storyline.

Ranking the visual voicemail services
Posted by Joe on June 24, 2008
Over the past month, we’ve gone over a number of visual voicemail services: GotVoice, SpinVox, YouMail, and SimulSays. While each of these services offers similar features, not all visual voicemail interfaces are created equal. It’s come time for us to sort through these four and pick the best. We’ll rate them according to four categories: User interface, cost-benefits, transcription accuracy, and extras.

RIM, Rogers plan Bold release parties
Posted by Joe on June 24, 2008
Amid heavy rumors that the BlackBerry Bold will find its way to store shelves next month, Rogers and RIM have announced a series of release parties which will take place across Canada. If you’re in Toronto on July 8, Montreal on the 9th, Calgary on the 15th, or Vancouver on the 17th, you might want to consider crashing one of these babies. I kid, of course, but then again RIM does throw one heck of a party.
There is no release date set for the Bold, but this does suggest that we shouldn’t have to wait long. Invitation after the jump.
