BlackBerry Thunder in the mainstream

Posted by Joe on May 16, 2008

Far be it from the Wall Street Journal to mention Boy Genius Report when reporting on the BlackBerry Thunder. The Rupert Murdoch-owned newspaper goes with the headline “BlackBerry With Touch Screen Planned,” citing sources “familiar with the matter.” Maybe they have their own sources, but there’s a good chance they just pulled the BGR post and spun it as their own reporting.

The Street pulls a laughable line: “A number of bloggers have been posting photos of what they think the new Blackberry Thunder might look like. The authenticity of those photos is another story. They look very manipulated.” Hello? Maybe that’s because it’s a mock up! BGR took care of that in the original post: “No, you morons, the image above is not real. Didn’t we go through this once before?”

RIM introduces BlackBerry Wallet for online shopping

Posted by Joe on May 15, 2008

It might not be big right now, but we’re definitely going to see an upward trend in online shopping habits. This is no idle speculation on my part; it’s a natural evolution in the way we use our mobile devices. To facilitate this increasing demand RIM has announced an application that will make the shopping experience much easier: BlackBerry Wallet. It allows you to securely store your credit card information, including rewards programs, plus your shipping information right on your BlackBerry device.

BlackBerry Thunder looking more like reality

Posted by Joe on May 15, 2008

It looks like the BlackBerry Thunder has been creating some hype since BGR broke the story on Tuesday. No, there’s not a chance anyone at RIM will discuss this today. It would have been nice to get an announcement at WES (also would have been nice to hear about OS 4.5), but there are probably a few things they have to get out of the way before announcing. The National Post has been on the story, though, and after talking to a Canaccord Adams analyst, believe that the story is legit. Not that we had any doubts. But it’s nice to see another news outlet picking up this story.

Geek Review: Swapping my BlackBerry Holster for a BlackBerry Skin Case

Posted by Cooper on May 15, 2008

So I have this BlackBerry that I keep with me always. I mean really, it never leaves my hip holster unless I am doing “the move”. Even then, it is only out of its snug little home for a few short seconds.

The holster itself has become an extension of my body at this point and is attached to me at all times. Yes. I actually use the drawstring in my pijama bottoms so that the BlackBerry does not cause me to expose myself to my neighbors again while doing the morning newspaper stroll. Yes you read that right, I said “again” (I am sorry Mrs. Seigle and thanks a million for not phoning the authorities — you are a VERY understanding lady).

BBGeeks WES podcast number two

Posted by Joe on May 14, 2008

There were some awards handed out by RIM’s co-CEO Jim Balsille. If you want a live-blogged recount of it, you can check out Doug from BlackBerry Cool. JP Morgan, TeleNav/The City of New York, and British American Tobacco were among the winners in various categories.

I thought Jim’s remarks about BlackBerry addiction were spot on. I talk about them briefly in the podcast. Also, there’s a bit on Unify4Life. It turns your BlackBerry into a remote control. Sounds pretty sweet. I’ll try to get a demo tomorrow.

So go download the podcast (3 min, 12 sec)

WES 2008: I love the demo theater

Posted by Joe on May 14, 2008

What isn’t there to like about WES? There are great people with great ideas about how we can better use or BlackBerry devices. Yeah, and the free drinks don’t hurt. Over the past two days, I’ve found myself going back to one place more than the rest: The demo theater. This is the place where a real geek can get his or her fix. Representatives from various companies are taking the stage to talk about and demonstrate their products and applications. And for the most part, it’s been very impressive.
