Get ready for a clamshell BlackBerry

Posted by Joe on April 30, 2008

It looks like you might be new to our site. You may want to subscribe to the feed or follow us on Twitter.

So I’m hanging around, chatting about trivial topics with some friends at 10 p.m., and my RSS hits with a post from Boy Genius Report. At this point in the evening, I usually just glance at the headline, and either mark it as read or open it in my browser for further study tomorrow morning. This time, I could do neither. That’s because this particular posts has exclusive photos of a soon to be released clamshell BlackBerry: The Kickstart. Quite the surprise, to say the least. A few pictures of the beast, plus the available details, after the jump.

HanDBase holding applet creation contest

Posted by Joe on April 30, 2008

DDH Software, makers of HanDBase mobile database software, is looking for people to utilize its powers in the creation of mobile applets for PDAs and smartphones. To this end, they’re holding a contest, which will reward two creators — one for Best Commercial Applet and the other for Best Personal Applet — who “demonstrate how easy it is for anyone to develop a mobile solution for either work or personal use.” The winners will get HanDBase Runtime licenses, which will allow them to put the applet on the market as a standalone entity. You can check out our HanDBase review, and then head over to the contest page to get further information.

Using BlackBerry email without a BlackBerry

Posted by Joe on April 30, 2008

Contrary to what you might assume after reading this site, not everyone loves the BlackBerry. Real estate agents, for example, benefit from the Palm Treo and its eKey application, which allows them access to for-sale homes. I have a friend who works for a major consulting firm who insists on his device having a touchscreen interface. And I can’t count the number of complaints I’ve heard about the BlackBerry 8830’s keyboard. Yet, many people consider BlackBerry’s brand of push email to be the best in the business. RIM has a compromise: BlackBerry Connect. This allows business users to connect to BIS and BES from the compatible device of their choosing.

If you can’t beat ‘em, hire their people

Posted by Joe on April 30, 2008

If you’re Research In Motion, and you’re trying to compete with what some people deem the coolest phone ever, what do you do? You can try as you might to outdo that device, but you’ll need some firepower. It seems RIM is aiming to do just that, as they’re looking for someone fluent in iPhone application development. According to the job listing, the ideal candidate would be “part of a newly-created team.”

Time to throw aside the 9000 rumors

Posted by Joe on April 29, 2008

There are rumors, and there are leaked documents that clear up those rumors. The fellows at Boy Genius Report have gotten their hands on an internal spec sheet for the BlackBerry 9000. It’s full of goodies, including WiFi, which makes me weep with joy. It looks like the browser is getting a major overhaul, which is even better than the WiFi. And best of all, BGR says we’re looking at a July release. They further say that they have an idea of when it will be announced, but are keeping it to themselves. WES, anyone? You can check out shots of the spec sheet here. Happy viewing.

Expect to sign a contract to get Sprint’s Curve

Posted by Joe on April 29, 2008

This is an odd one. It appears that Gear Diary (via CrunchGear) has picked up a tidbit on Sprint’s offering of the Curve. No it’s not a release date, but if it’s not out tomorrow, Alltel will be the first to carry it. It’s quite an odd pricing scheme. Full details after the jump. But the long and short of the matter is that if you want the Curve 8830 from Sprint without a contract, you’re going to be out 750 bucks.

Yahoo! oneSearch: 28 days later

Posted by Joe on April 28, 2008

Earlier this month, Yahoo! unveiled its new oneSearch, which includes voice-based search. Since this was an exclusive BlackBerry download, I decided to give it a test run. As I reported at the time, the feature worked well even in loud, crowded areas. For the most part, oneSearch was picking up my voice with accuracy, though there are clearly nuances in my speech that tripped it up. But as we were later told by Yahoo! execs, oneSearch will learn my style of speech over time. So I’m here to check back in 28 days later.

Whole lotta confusion on the 3G BlackBerry

Posted by Joe on April 28, 2008

So on Friday we cited an article in Fortune, which said that a 3G BlackBerry with AT&T was pushed from June to August. This sounded like news to us, since we haven’t really been familiar with an 8900 (Meteor) model. In fact, as far as I knew, the next new model released would be the 9000 series. Turns out, the Fortune article wasn’t that newsworthy. Boy Genius Report said the same thing a month ago (which BBGeeks definitely touched on). I guess that since Fortune changed the model number, it seemed like legit news.

AT&T’s 3G BlackBerry pushed back

Posted by Joe on April 25, 2008

Ready for a June launch of a 3G iPhone on AT&T? Don’t get too excited, because you’re going to have to wait another month or two. It might be August before we see a 3G iPhone launch on a GSM carrier in the U.S. AT&T is citing call quality issues, but others are quick to point another reason for the delay. Speculation is that Apple will release its 3G iPhone in June as well, and RIM wants to avoid competing with the hip new device. And so the 8900, a.k.a. Meteor, will stay out of consumer hands for at least three more months.
