RIM: Social networking the future

Posted by Joe on February 15, 2008

If you are new here, you may want to subscribe to my feed or subscribe to us on Twitter!

You might be a bit confused by that headline. When you hear the term “social networking” surely the first things that come to mind are MySpace, Facebook, Twitter, Digg, and the numerous social applications available on the web. Certainly, these are not thought of as primary business tools. Yes, some people promote themselves through these media, but that relates mainly to entertainment and the arts. BlackBerry-toting businessmen typically aren’t associated with these platforms. Yet they may just be the future of business.

Are competitors catching up to RIM?

Posted by Joe on February 14, 2008

I caught an article today on ZDNet talking about new devices on the way this year, and the fact that they could lead to a decline in BlackBerry sales. Specifically, they were talking about HTC, makers of the vaunted Touch, and of course the iPhone. Also thrown in there is the mobile internet device being developed by Intel, which is basically a mini mini laptop. Still, I have a hard time believing that any of these will significantly cut into RIM’s sales this year.

BlackBerry outage due to upgrade

Posted by Joe on February 13, 2008

So yes, the business world is abuzz with Research In Motion’s Monday BlackBerry outage. People want to know why this happened. Furthermore, they want to know why it won’t happen again. According to RIM, it was due to an upgrade which was meant to increase capacity across the network. Other upgrades of this type haven’t caused an outage in the past, so the company is confident that it will not occur again in the future.

Changing your BlackBerry auto signature

Posted by Joe on February 13, 2008

A couple of days ago, Rae asked me to do a piece on how to change or remove the auto signature on your BlackBerry. You know, like the one I used to have that said “Sent from my Verizon Wireless BlackBerry.” I was kind of confused at first. “That’s easy,” I said. “You just log into your BlackBerry account and change the preferences of your email.” But then she reminded me that not all BlackBerry users have that login. Duh, I thought. What about the BES crew? They’re probably going to want to change their signatures, too.

New music service to launch for BlackBerry

Posted by Joe on February 12, 2008

What I’ve increasingly noticed on NYC subway commutes is people listening to music on their BlackBerrys. I’ve even thought about the notion myself. Why carry around two decently bulky devices — BlackBerry and an iPod — when you can get some of the latter’s service from the former? Plus, you don’t waste time flipping through a vast iPod library. Since BlackBerry supports up to 4 GB of microSD expansion, you’re kind of limited as to what you can carry. Meledeo, an online music and media company, is trying to make things even easier for you to listen to music on your BlackBerry. They’re launching a service called nyTsie, and it sounds rather enticing.

North American BlackBerry Outage

Posted by Joe on February 12, 2008

This isn’t just a report — it’s coming straight from Research In Motion. They’ve acknowledged that BlackBerry service was down yesterday. Service reportedly returned to some capacity by 5:30 p.m. It should be back to normal by now. According to RIM support account manager Bryan Simpson, the outage affected “business clients and ‘users of the Americas network’.” I was running some errands around that time, and noticed no missed emails. A few actually came through, I believe, but that could have been prior to 3 p.m., when the outage was acknowledged.

Anyone still having problems?

Pictures of the CDMA BlackBerry Curve

Posted by Joe on February 11, 2008

Well, I promised them a week ago. Finally, fellow geekers, I have brought you pictures of the impending CDMA Curve. I’ll start posting them below the jump. You can find out some of the features by going back and reading last week’s post. Yes, it has GPS. No, as you’ll see, the keyboard is not like the 8830, but rather like the previous Curve model. It’s the 8330, and no I have no idea on a release date, nor which CDMA carrier will carry this first. So, take a gander for yourself:

Evidence of a touchscreen BlackBerry

Posted by Joe on February 8, 2008

We’re bookending the week with some new innovations by Research In Motion. On Monday, I spoke of the impending CDMA Curve. Oh, and don’t think that one is going away. You’ll see more on that one soon. Now we’re ending the week with some BlackBerry patent news. According to a patent application recently published, RIM is working on a mechanism that will integrate touchscreen with LCD.
