BlackBerry slider patent application

Posted by Joe on February 29, 2008

I guess Russell Shaw just knows where to look for his BlackBerry patent applications. He’s always finding new ones. The best part about them is that they really get the geeks excited. We all like to see innovation, and seeing a patent application means that Research In Motion has at least through about implementing this kind of design. Today, we see that they’re eyeing a slider patent. It kinda looks like the HTC Touch, really, which would be more than welcome by me. Picture and commentary after the jump.

Guide to wiping your BlackBerry

Posted by Cooper on February 29, 2008

The BlackBerry device is a wonderful thing. RIM’s magical SmartPhone allows us to keep up speed with all of our business correspondence while on the move, as well as keep in touch with all our important contacts. We load our BlackBerries with various softwares and applications to increase our productivity and customize them with interesting themes and ringtones. We watch movies and play games and track day to day activities. All of these things require passwords and usually involve storing data on our devices that is sensitive in nature.

So what if you want to wipe your BlackBerry clean?

No I am not talking about cleaning your screen folks, I am talking about erasing all of the data that is stored and bringing the BlackBerry back to it’s factory default state.

CrackBerry launches Facebook PIN exchange

Posted by Joe on February 28, 2008

Last week, I talked about various forms of BlackBerry messaging. Notably, I touted BlackBerry messenger as a superior service. At worst, it uses your data plan, so you’re not incurring any extra charges. You certainly won’t use up any text messages with it. The folks at CrackBerry are pumped about BlackBerry Messenger, too. They’ve released a Facebook application that allows you to exchange your PIN with your friends. So you can all text message to your heart’s content, without incurring a single additional fee.

OtterBox now available for Pearl

Posted by Joe on February 27, 2008

Last year, we saw the introduction of the OtterBox, a super-protective casing for your BlackBerry. This was available for most models, but notably absent was the Pearl. But now with the launch of the 8130 and 8120, OtterBox has incentive to release a case for the model. And they have, as they’ve introduced the OtterBox 1936. It protects your BlackBerry while allowing full access to the trackball, USB port, camera, and self-portrait mirror. Oh, and you’ll also get a venting system that protects your speaker phone while allowing it to be used muffle-free. So basically you’re getting top-notch protection without any loss of functionality. Sounds ripe to me.

Yahoo! Go hits the Pearl 8130

Posted by Joe on February 26, 2008

You might remember a couple of months back when Cooper and I reviewed Yahoo! Go 2.0. At the end of the last link, I listed the BlackBerry models which Go worked with. Notably absent from that list was the new Pearl 8130. A few days later, we noticed that complaints were popping up about the program not working with that device. We heard that compatibility was in the offing, but no set date was published. Well, now it’s ready to go.

Speech-to-text comes to BlackBerry

Posted by Joe on February 25, 2008

This is a U.K.-only development for the time being, but if it ends up working there, we could see it in the U.S. Well, we already have seen it in the U.S., but it’s just a wee more expensive…and primitive. The service in the U.K., Spinvox, is offering a plugin for BlackBerrys that will convert voice mails into text. They’ve been honing D2, the conversion program, for years now, feeding it both natural language and slang. They’re even asking users to submit words and phrases that might not show up with D2 yet. Given the ultra-convenient nature of this service, it’s easy to see it catching on very soon.

RIM exceeding subscriber expectations

Posted by Joe on February 22, 2008

Research In Motion recently said that it expected to add 1.82 million customers to its BlackBerry line of smartphones during its fourth fiscal quarter, which ends next week. That’s a rather aggressive forecast, considering all of Verizon Wireless added 2.0 million customers in its fourth quarter. That’s an entire wireless carrier — second largest in terms of subscribers in the U.S. — that RIM is approaching. (Though not in total; Verizon has 63.7 million subscribers total.) Now, however, the forecast has changed…in the positive. They now expect to add 15 to 20 percent more than that (!!).
