It looks like you might be new to our site. You may want to subscribe to the feed or follow us on Twitter.

We love the guys at Boy Genius Report. They’ve got some insider source or another, and are always giving us juicy tidbits before they’re announced by the companies — usually RIM and AT&T. Anyway, they have some specs on the rumored BlackBerry 9100. Lots of technical stuff, but that’s what’s available at this point.

Why you want the BlackBerry Pearl

Posted by Joe on November 30, 2007

Since 1999, Research In Motion has produced their uber-popular BlackBerry smartphone, the industry standard in its field. While people gushed about their BBs — some even becoming “addicted” — there were just a few complaints, mainly coming from the consumer sector. The devices were great, but they were bulky and aimed almost completely at business users. Something this neat, many thought, just had to be adapted for the casual user.

So, responding to demand, RIM introduced the Pearl (8100) in the third quarter of 2006. It was a quad-band GSM device, and the demand grew so much over the next few months that RIM went back to the drawing board and introduced a CDMA version of the Pearl (8130) in November 2007. Now that we have an offering for both major networks in the U.S., it’s time to answer a haranguing question: Why do you want the Pearl?

BlackBerry goes to Russia

Posted by Joe on November 28, 2007

First to China, now to Russia. Russian mobile carriers MTS and Vimplecom have confirmed that they’re set to start selling BlackBerrys in the first quarter of 2008. They recently received permission from state security services, the final hurdle to implementation.

The best in free BlackBerry software

Posted by Joe on November 27, 2007

One of our favorite aspects of the BlackBerry is the bevy of third party applications available. Programs are available to help perform nearly every task. Unfortunately, many of them cost money, oftentimes more than they’re worth to you. It would be wasteful, for example, to drop $24.95 on a stock tracking program if you’re not really active in the market. But it would be nice to have.

So for you we’ve compiled a list of the very best in free BlackBerry software. Take a gander. You’ll probably find something useful to you.

BlackBerry provides fastest data transfer rate

Posted by Joe on November 27, 2007

According to an independent survey, transferring and syncing data from your computer to your smartphone is fastest handled by the BlackBerry. This test pitted the BlackBerry 8120 (pretty much the 8130 in the U.S.) against the iPhone, the Sony Ericsson Walkman, and the Motorola Razr 2. Tests were conducted with file transfer software included with the phones and via direct file transfer. And in the end, the winner was the 8120.

Arming the police with BlackBerrys

Posted by Joe on November 26, 2007

Interesting pickup from the Sunday Mirror, a paper in the UK. They’re saying, albeit very briefly, that “a police force” (ambiguity theirs) plans to distribute BlackBerrys to their officers. The idea is to slash office time, which we think is wonderful. The devices will be linked to the Police National Computer and other important databases. This is said to cut office time from 50 percent to 20 percent, something we’d welcome in the U.S. After all, we’ve seen trends, especially in New York City, where more police officers patrolling an area led to a lesser rate of crime. If giving them BlackBerrys is part of that kind of solution, we’re all for it.

Don’t expect the world from the 9000 series

Posted by Joe on November 23, 2007

Way back when, we found a report that the BlackBerry 9000 series was nearing a release. Since then, the Internet has exploded with rumors positioning themselves as facts. And the originators of the rumor, the fine folks at Boy Genius Report, are sick of all of this false information. They’re even calling many reports “a little misguided.”
